Course: BSC.E. IV_________________ Section: 55133_____________ Day/Time: TTH 5:00 – 6:30 PM_ _______

I. Define the following:

1. Environmental engineering
2. Air pollutant
3. Global warming
4. Greenhouse effect
5. Renewable resources
6. Non-renewable resource

II. Answer the following questions:

1. List three aspect of our natural world that environmental engineers are working
to care/or restore.
2. List down five effects of air pollution.
3. What are the different sources of air pollutants?
4. Write down five major air pollutants and their chemical formula.
5. List down three example of:
a. Renewable resources
b. Non-renewable resources

I. DEFINITIONS:

1. Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the application of

scientific and engineering principles for protection of human populations from the effects of adverse
environmental factors; protection of environments, both local and global, from potentially deleterious
effects of natural and human activities; and improvement of environmental quality.

2. Air pollutants are solid particles, gases, and liquid droplets in the air that can adversely
affect ecosystems and the health of humans. Major ambient air pollutantsinclude toxic metals,
polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzene, particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides, sulfur
oxides, carbon monoxide, and ozone.

3. Global warming is a long-term rise in the average temperature of the

Earth's climate system, an aspect of climate change shown by temperature measurements
and by multiple effects of the warming.
4. Greenhouse effect is the trapping of the sun's warmth in a planet's lower atmosphere due to
the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared
radiation emitted from the planet's surface.

5. Renewable resources are those which can be replenished over time by

some natural process, including farming. These resources have the ability
to be renewed over a short period of time.

6. A nonrenewable resource is a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced

by natural means on a level equal to its consumption. Most fossil fuels, such as oil, natural gas
and coal are considered nonrenewable resources in that their use is not sustainable because
their formation takes billions of years.

II. ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

 Air quality
 Land quality
 Water quality

2. Five effects of air pollution:

 Global warming
 Smog
 Acid rain
 Respiratory illness
 Other illnesses

3. Different sources of air pollutants:

 Exhaust from trucks and cars
 Exhaust from industrial plants

4. Five major air pollutants and their chemical formula:

 nitrogen oxides (NOx)
 sulfur oxides (SOx)
 carbon monoxide (CO)
 carbon dioxide (CO2)

5. Three examples of:

a. Renewable resources
 Plants
 Water
 Solar energy
b. Non-renewable resources
 Oil
 Coal
 Petroleum
