Unit 1: Introduction to the IACD MOOC

Assignment 1

Аt the very beginning of our cultural awareness journey, I suggest that you should do a
cultural intelligence self-assessment test to evaluate your preliminary cultural
knowledge, your motivation and the ability to adapt in your interactions with people from
other cultures.
The following Cultural Intelligence scale (QCS) provides us with a great opportunity to
measure our four main individual capabilities:
1. CQ Drive – measuring our motivation to communicate with people from different
cultures
2. CQ Knowledge – relates to our knowledge about the differences and similarities
between people from different countries
3. CQ Strategy – related to our ability to plan in advance our communication
approaches in intercultural situations
4. CQ action – reflects our ability to adapt to an unexpected communicative situation
which has not been planned
Since the main purpose and task of this course is to help you develop and increase your
cultural competence and skills needed for a more effective intercultural communication,
you may find it useful to compare the scores of your four capabilities, measured at the
beginning and at the end of the course.

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. This publication reflects the views

information contained therein.
There are no right or wrong answers. The higher the score, the more skillful and
confident someone is to observe, evaluate and interact in intercultural
communication. Please take notes of your self-assessment results and make sure to
keep the information for further comparison at the end of our course.
Before taking the test, please provide the following information:
1. Gender:
 Male
 Female
2. Age
 18 - 19 years old,
 20 - 24
 25 – 29
 30 – 39
 40 +
3. Nationality:
_______________________________________________________
4. Education
 Undergraduate university student
 Graduate (Bachelor degree)
 Postgraduate (Master degree and Ph.D.)
5. Programme of study
________________________________________________________
6. How long have you lived outside your home country (for studies or work)
 1 to 3 months
 4 to 6 months
 7 to 12 months
 1 to 2 years
 3 to 5 years
 5 years +
7. How often in your daily life do you happen to communicate with people from other
countries:
 Never
 Hardly ever
 Sometimes
 Often
 All the time

Instructions:
1. Read each statement and select the response that best describes your capabilities
relative to those of your peers.
2. Select the answer that BEST describes you AS YOU REALLY ARE (1=strongly
disagree; 7=strongly agree)
3. For scoring, you should average the items for each sub-dimension and then
average the sub-dimensions to create average scores for each of the four factors.
Finally, calculate your overall CQ score. Detailed instructions for how to calculate
your scores is provided after the test.
4. Write the 11 sub-dimension, the 4 factor scores and your overall CQ result in the
space assigned after the test.
