Tutee Reading Tutoring Grade Level School District Reflection

Level Semester
Emergent Reader Fall 2019 Kindergarten Albemarle County My time spent with this student was
Public Schools brief, however, very meaningful. I
met with this student for three hours
total, spread over a three-week time
period. We worked specifically on the
student’s concept of word through an
explicit and systematic lesson in
which he showed great improvement.
He had a very bubbly personality and
was a pleasure to work with.
Beginner Reader Fall 2019 Second Grade Albemarle County I worked individually with this
Public Schools student for two months from start to
finish, meeting once weekly. This
student was an ELL student who
natively speaks Spanish and was over
a year behind in reading and writing.
Through the completion of 6
comprehensive lesson plans, we
specifically focused on fluency, word
study, writing, and reading
comprehension instruction all at his
individualized levels. His post
assessment data showed to have made
progress in each of these struggling
areas. He was a very shy student,
however, opened up to me greatly
through our time together. Working
with this student opened my eyes to
the concept that when students are
provided with their needed supports,
they can and will succeed.
Instructional Spring 2020 Fourth Grade Albemarle County I worked individually with this
Reader Public Schools student for a month, meeting once
weekly. Unfortunately, our time
together was cut short due to school
closures for the COVID-19 virus.
During the time of working with this
student, she was reading indecently at
two grades below the benchmark
expectations. We completed three
comprehensive lessons together in
which we focused on fluency, word
study, reading comprehension, and
writing. This student was very quiet
and soft spoken at the beginning of
our tutoring sessions, but was able to
warm up and we created a great bond.
She taught me that determining
students interests and creating
personalized lessons geared towards
those interests can greatly increase
students’ engagement as well as
motivation.
