Field Experience Summaries

Field Experience: Class: Hours Completed: Summary:

Middle School Practicum EDFN 295 23.25 For this practicum, I worked in a 7th and 8th
grade middle school classroom. Part of the
time I was there, I completed work in a STEM
class which focused on teaching students
about engineering and exploring the ideas of
STEM work. This STEM class was composed of
a mix of 8th graders. During this class, I could
help students explore the ideas of STEM, and I
introduced the class to Little Bits through a
lesson plan I did. The other part of the time
was a study skills class with students who
needed extra help with homework. Some of
these students were on 504 plans and some
were on IEPs. During this time, I helped
students work on homework.
ECCO SPED 413 8 This field experience took place at the ECCO
facility in Madison, SD. This facility is now
known as Valiant Living. The class worked in
groups of two, and we focused on working
with one person from ECCO. The woman we
worked with was in her 60’s and had severe
intellectual disabilities. The goal of the project
was to teach the ‘student’ a skill that they
could use. We reviewed their information and
created a file review, which is how we chose
our project goals. Then we carried out the
lesson plans and used a task analysis to help
us gauge how well our student was
progressing with the new skill. We were
unable to meet with our student many times
because she became ill during the project, but
we did see her progress during our last task
analysis.
Level II ELED 450 9.50 During this experience, I was placed at the
Rustic Acres Colony. I worked in a
Kindergarten through 3rd grade classroom
with students who were English language
learners. While I was there, I worked with
students one-on-one reading, conducted both
a small group and a read aloud lesson plan
with the 1st grade students, and helped work
on reading curriculum.
English as a New SEED 496 72 For my ENL practicum, I spent a large part of
Language Internship my time with the Madison School District’s
ESL program. This program had 4 students
who ranged from 1.5 years in the country to
as little as 2 months in the country. Through
this experience, I saw a lot of different
teaching strategies for these students
including multiple exposures to vocabulary
and practice with speaking and listening in
almost every lesson. I also filled part of my
time at the K-2 Rustic Acres Colony classroom.
I spent my time her working on building
strong letter sound correspondences with
students and building English vocabulary. At
the end of this experience, I had to write a
paper related to the English as a New
Language sector of education. That paper is
attached below this page.
Kindergarten Practicum ELED 495 125 I completed my Kindergarten Practicum in
Mrs. Waba’s 1st grade classroom at the
Madison Elementary School. I had to complete
2 different lessons and 1 kindergarten
assessment during my time in the classroom. I
spent a lot of time working with students and
learning about the unique needs of
kindergarten students.
Level III ELED 459 80 I completed my Level III experience in the
same kindergarten classroom listed above.
During this time, we live the teacher life,
including getting to school and leaving school
at the same time as our teacher and carrying
out 5 lessons. It was strongly encouraged that
we completed thematic lessons by integrating
different subjects together. One of these
lessons include a reading lesson with social
studies integration in my Level III Lesson Plans
tab. We also get experience in creating and
carrying out a unit of at least 3 consecutive
lessons.
Elementary Student ELED 488 600 My elementary education student teaching
Teaching was completed in the Canistota School’s 1st
grade classroom. The elementary education
student teaching experiences provided me
with the best information about what I still
need to work on as a future educator. I spent
5 weeks as the full-time teacher, planning and
carrying out lessons on my own. I also spent 4
weeks both before and after these 5 weeks
doing different classes throughout the days to
help build up to the full-time teaching. This
was the most realistic and fun experience I
have gotten to complete in my college career.
I learned and adjusted my time management
skills and my estimation of how long it can
take 1st graders to complete activities! During
this time, we also completed a Teaching Work
Sample that is like a SLO. I completed mine on
a math unit. The full document of this can be
found in my student teaching lesson plans!
