Standard - 3.1.3.A5 Identify the structures in plants that are responsible for food production,
support, water transport, reproduction, growth, and protection.

Learning Targets/Objectives:

Students will be able to identify parts of a plant by creating a plant out of materials and
labeling the parts

Students will be able to describe the functions of a plant by explaining why they used certain
materials for their plant

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites:
● What a plant is
● Know that a plant is a living thing
● Know that plants have parts and functions
Key Vocabulary:
● Stem- conducts water, minerals, and food to other parts of the plant; it may also store
food, and green stems themselves produce food
● Roots- help provide support by anchoring the plant and absorbing water and nutrients
needed for growth
● Leaf- are made to catch the light and have openings to allow water and air to come and
go
● Flower- not only look pretty but, in fact, are important in making seeds

Content/Facts:
● Like animals, plants are living things or organisms
● Plants have chlorophyll, a green pigment necessary for photosynthesis
● There are other parts of a plant including fruits and seeds. (may be touched upon but
not fully taught)
● Each part of the plant plays an important role which helps the plant thrive, survive, and
reproduce.
● See the vocab
Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies: (10 minutes)
● Introduction - So yesterday we learned about the life cycle of a plant. Do we all
remember what I said to think about?
○ Allow students a couple of minutes to think.
○ If the students don’t answer then tell them.
○ If they answer along the lines of dealing with the parts and survival say close
and say this, “I asked you to think about possible parts of the plant and how
each part helps them survive.”
● We are now going to watch a quick video on parts of a plant
○ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD60-3rqPXg
● While watching the video the student will be filling out a Guided Notes sheet that goes
along with the video
○ Guided Notes and answer key can be found at the bottom of the lesson plan
● This video is just a brief introduction to the plant lesson so children have an idea of
what will come

Development/Teaching Approaches (40-45 minutes)

● To start off the class the teacher will guide the students through making a plant
foldable (found on activity page- Activity 1)
● The students will be given a blank sheet of paper that is already pre cut for them
● You will guide the students through the drawing of the plant and labeling
● In the first top box they will draw seeds label it
● In the second box down they will draw a flower with seeds in the middle label it
● In the third box down they will draw a stem with a leaf or two label it
● In the fourth box down they will draw a stem and label it
● In the fifth and final box at the bottom they will draw roots and label it
● The students will flip to the inside
● On the top left box the students will label ‘Functions of Each Part’
● This will remind the students when they flip over the functions of each part will be on
the inside
● The students will label each box on the right that corresponds with its part on the front
● In these boxes you will ask the students if anyone remembers any of the part function
that they learned in the PowerPoint
● If so let they students say aloud what they think and if they are correct allow the
students to put it in the correct box
● If they are wrong allow other students to give it a try, if no one succeeds then tell them
and write it in
● Next the teacher will go over the PowerPoint
○ file:///C:/Users/ruina/Desktop/EEU%20305/Plant%20Parts%20and%20Functio
ns%20PDF.pdf
● The students can use their foldables as a reference while the teacher goes through the
PowerPoint
● For this next activity we are going to practice what we learned so far! (an example can
be found on the activities page- Activity 2)
● Each table will be given a live plant
● The students must work together to take apart the plant and tape it to a piece of paper
● The teacher must be walking around at this time to make sure that students are staying
on track
● The students must then label the plant
● The students will be given a worksheet named ‘Functions of Plant Parts’ that they will
fill out as a group
● If the students need help with defining functions allow the students to all collaborate as
a classroom
● The final activity will be counted as their assessment
● The students will be given all different kinds of materials, the student must create a
flower out of those materials and label it with stem, leaf, roots, seed, and flower
● An example of what someones could look like can be found on the activities page-
Activity 3
● They must tape or glue their materials to a sheet of paper
● Make sure the students know to put their name on the back of the paper and to put a tile
of Parts of a Plant on the top of the paper
● Give students about 15-20 minutes for this activity
● Tell the students to be mindful of what materials they choose
● Go over the grading rubric so students know what is expected from them
● Tell them to think about the functions of each part and how the material can help them
● For example: you might want to use a straw for the stem because the stem helps move
water and minerals throughout the plant
● Once the students have made their plant creation and have labeled it with the parts pass
out the “Why” page that goes with this activity (found on the activity page- Activity 3)
● The students will fill that out and hand it into the teacher with their finished plant made
from materials

Closure/Summarizing Strategies: (5-10 Minutes)

● Tell the students that today we learned a lot about the part of a plant and their functions
● Can anyone remind me what we learned about today?
● So we know that flowers are plants, can anyone else think of other plants?
● Show the students a picture of trees that are around their playground
● Tell them to take a good look a the picture
● Tell them “I want you guys to think about this question for tomorrow: are trees plants,
why or why not?”

Accommodations/Differentiation:

Accommodations
● Our student that we are accommodating for is a female ESL student who is fluent in
Spanish.
○ For the YouTube video there is an option for Spanish subtitles which I would
pop up on the screen for our student.
○ For the rest of the activities with the worksheets that are given I would have
both the English and Spanish translations on the worksheets.
○ When the student is working in a group the other students can help guide the
Spanish speaking student.
Differentiation
○ For students who are struggling- The teacher could have a word bank for the
student on some of the worksheets. The teacher could also try to keep a close
eye on the student when walking around.
○ For students that are accelerated learners- The teacher could have the student
write a summary about how the plants and functions work to help a plant
survive.

Materials/Resources:
● Pencil/ colored pencils/crayons
● Computer
● Projector
● YouTube Video
● Guided Notes Sheet on the YouTube Video
● PowerPoint on the Parts and Functions of Plants
● Foldable Paper
● Real Plant (#depends on # of groups)
● Sheet of paper to paste the Real Plant on
● Functions of Plant Parts worksheet
● Buttons, seeds, straws, string, and other random materials
