The importance of studying Mechanics

As a Mechanical Engineering student, studying Mechanics is really important for it is one

of the foundations of this course. According to John (2015) Engineering Mechanics is the
one of the most basic subjects that is required to study mechanical engineering from second
year onwards. The subject will expose you to concepts like friction, kinetics, kinematics,
resolving forces, trusses etc. which forms the crux of design sciences. All these concepts are
required to study subjects like Strength of Materials, Theory of Machines I, II, Machine
Design, FEA, Mechanical Vibration etc. Though this subject, we are able to understand how
a machine works and it will be used especially when it comes to design.
Also, as the world progresses, the technology is also evolving. And as we look on to our
surroundings, all the advancements are moving or in motion just like transportation,
manufacturing and etc. Without Mechanics, it’ll be hard for us to think and create of an
innovation that can help to improve the quality of life. Even as young as I am, can contribute
to the advancement of technology through having knowledge and understanding Mechanics.

Examples of the different applications of Mechanics on our daily lives

Transportation
One of the most evident purpose and applications of
Mechanics are transportation. Our cars, trains, ships, airplanes
and all the moving objects that help us to go to one place to
another.

Entertainment
Our amusement park rides are one of the coolest
application of Mechanics. Imagine how we enjoy riding all of
them. How it designed and it works is because of it.
Energy Sources
Our primary main source of energy, just like
powerplants deals with a lot of movements for which what
Mechanics is all about. Imagine the perfect design of those
plants, it is because of mechanics also.

The different branches of Mechanics

According to Goodsten (2019)

Mechanics may be divided into
three branches: statics, which
deals with forces acting on and
in a body at rest; kinematics,
which describes the possible
motions of a body or system of
bodies; and kinetics, which
attempts to explain or predict the
motion that will occur in a given
situation.

The branch of physics which deals with the study of motion of material objects is called
mechanics. Mechanics can be classified into the following two main branches:

Statics: It is that branch of mechanics which deals with the study of objects at rest. In this
branch, we study the motion of objects under the effect of forces in equilibrium. Time factor has
no role to play in statics.
Dynamics: the branch of mechanics which deals with motion of material objects by taking into
account the cause of motion (i.e. forces) is called dynamics. As the cause of motion is force,
therefore, dynamics is based on the concept of force. It has two sub-branches:

Kinematics: The branch of mechanics which deals with motion of material objects without
taking into account the cause of motion (i.e. forces) is called kinematics. Time factor plays an
essential role in kinematics.

Kinetics: It is the branch of classical mechanics that is concerned with the relationship between
motion and its causes, specifically, forces and torques
