Abstract ii

The following work has the development of the three exercises previously proposed by
the teacher of the area, where problems of centroids and centers of gravity for different figures
and must be resolved by integration, sum of forces or sum of moments, according to the program
to stay in class

First Exercise

Exercise 5.48

Question

Determine by direct integration the centroid of the area shown.

Figure 1 Shaded Area Scheme

Solution

In general terms we have the equation that can help us for the solution:

∫ 𝑥 𝑑𝐴
𝑥̅ = 𝑒𝑞(1)
∫ 𝑑𝐴

∫ 𝑦 𝑑𝐴
𝑦̅ = 𝑒𝑞(2)
∫ 𝑑𝐴

𝜋𝑥
And operate. We have that for the area is the function 𝑦 = 𝑎 ∙ sen ( 𝑙 ) evaluate

𝑙
in the interval 0 to 2.
2

𝑙

2 𝜋𝑥
𝑦 = ∫ 𝑎 ∙ sen ( ) 𝑑𝑥
0 𝑙

𝑎𝑙 2
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 𝑢
𝜋

The center in the x axis:

𝑙
∫2 𝑥𝑑𝐴
𝑥̅ = 0
𝑎𝑙
𝜋

𝑙
𝑥̅ =
𝜋

The center in the y axis:

𝑙
∫02 𝑦𝑑𝐴
𝑦̅ =
𝑎𝑙
𝜋

𝑎𝜋
𝑦̅ =

For a final figure:

Second Exercise

Exercise 5.30

Question

The homogeneous wire ABC is bent into a semicircular arc and a straight section

as shown and is attached to a hinge at A. Determine the value of u for which the wire is

in equilibrium for the indicated position.

Figure 3 Scheme centroid for the wire.

Solution

For the wire the centroid (To be a homogeneous material) is same that the

semicircular form.

2𝑟
𝐶∁ =
𝜋
5

Figure 4 Free-body diagram

First note that for the equilibrium, the center of gravity of the wire must lie on a

vertical line through A. Further, because the wire is a homogeneous, it’s center of gravity

will coincide whit the centroid with the centroid of the corresponding line.

𝑥̅ = 0

∑ 𝑥̅ 𝐿 = 0

1 2𝑟
(− 𝑟 ∙ cos 𝜃) (𝑟) + ( − 𝑟 ∙ cos 𝜃) (𝜋𝑟) = 0
2 𝜋

4
cos 𝜃 =
1 + 2𝜋

cos 𝜃 = 0.54921

𝜃 = cos −1(0.54921) = 56.7°

Third Exercise

Exercise 4.44

Question

For the beam and loading shown, determine the range of values of W for which

the magnitude of the couple at D does not exceed 40 lb*ft.

Figure 5 Scheme for the free-body diagram.

Solution

Figure 6 Free-body diagram.

7

For W force:

𝑀𝐷 = −40𝑙𝑏 ∙ 𝑓𝑡

For AD min:

∑ 𝑀𝐷 = 0 :

(40𝑙𝑏)(8𝑓𝑡) − 𝑊𝑚𝑖𝑛 (5𝑓𝑡) + (40𝑙𝑏)(4𝑓𝑡) − 40𝑙𝑏 ∙ 𝑓𝑡 = 0

𝑊𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 88𝑙𝑏

For AD max:

∑ 𝑀𝐷 = 0 :

(40𝑙𝑏)(8𝑓𝑡) − 𝑊𝑚𝑎𝑥 (5𝑓𝑡) + (40𝑙𝑏)(4𝑓𝑡) + 40𝑙𝑏 ∙ 𝑓𝑡 = 0

𝑊𝑚𝑖𝑛 = 104𝑙𝑏
