Exercise 1

An 1800-N Load Q is applied to the pulley C, which can roll on the cable ACB.

The pulley is held in the position shown by a second cable CAD, which passes over the

pulley A and supports a load P. Determine (a) the tension in cable ACB, (b) the

magnitude of load P.

∑ 𝐹𝑥 = 0 :

𝑇𝐴𝐶𝐵 (𝐶𝑜s25° − sen55°) − P Cos 55° = 0

P = 0.5801𝑇𝐴𝐶𝐵 (1)

∑ 𝐹𝑦 = 0:

𝑇𝑨𝑪𝑩 sen25° + sen55° + P sen25° − 1800N = 0

1.2417𝑇𝐴𝐶𝐵 + 0.8191P = 1800N (2)

a). Substitute equation (1) into equation (2):

1.2417𝑇𝐴𝐶𝐵 + 0.8191(0.5801𝑇𝐴𝐶𝐵 ) = 1800𝑁

Hence:

𝑻𝑨𝑪𝑩 = 𝟏𝟎𝟒𝟖. 𝟑𝟕𝑵

b). Using (1)

𝑃 = 0.5801(1048.37𝑁) = 608𝑁

𝑷 = 𝟔𝟎𝟖𝑵

Exercise 2

The boom OA carries a load P and is supported by two cables as shown. Knowing

that the tension in cable AB is 183 lb and that the resultant of the load P and of the forces

exerted at A by the two cables must be directed along OA, determine the tension in cable

AC.
