the Field
The Pianoforce System is capable of very fast repetition and very soft play but the piano that it is installed in
must be prepared properly in order for the system to play at its best.
There are several steps that the piano technician/player specialist should take in order to ensure that the
most precise reproduction of the music occurs. These following steps are most essential when the piano is
“fresh out of the box” but these steps would also be necessary at some time
interval after initial delivery. This would be especially true if the piano had been moved –especially across
the country – and had encountered rough handling and or a distinct humidity change.
Step 1
The piano must be free from binding, sluggishness or anything else that would slow down or cause
the piano to not respond to its full potential. Easing keys, lubricating action centers, checking to see that no
keys rub each other are essential service issues that must be addressed.
Step 2
Most new pianos are not truly finely regulated. At most, a large percentage of pianos are
“close enough for jazz”. During calibration , the Pianoforce system is designed to play each note in sequence,
starting loudly, and getting softer until it senses that the hammer is not striking the string. It will then “back
up” to a higher volume level and make that level the new “minimum” value.
To get the quietest minimum value, it is necessary to set the let-off of the hammer to a very close tolerance.
Usually much closer than the standard out-of-the-box setting. You do not want the hammer to block the string
but it should also get as close to the string before let-off as possible.
Step 3
The hammer should go through its normal arch and travel the distance that the specifications
call for. Often, during the installation process, the hammer line is sometimes disturbed and needs to
be reset. Also, after a few months of play, the knuckle of the piano becomes compressed and the
hammer line needs to be reestablished. The technician should run the key capstan up to re-establish this
line. Usually a good rule of thumb is for the hammer shank to be above the hammer rest rail the equivalent
of its diameter.
With the mechanics of the piano checked and regulated if necessary, it is now time to check and reset
some values of the Pianoforce system.
The following are adjustable values of the system in order to tailor it precisely to the piano that it is
installed upon.
NOTE: If you are not an experienced Pianoforce service person, please contact the National Tech Support
Manager at 877 542 8807, ext 2 for assistance with these settings
NOTE: HC, RC and SC are Global values - Use <Prev> and <Next> buttons
changing the value will effect all notes 5 - 84 to play next or previous note Use <+> and < - > buttons to change value
HC (Hold Force)
RC (Releace Force)
SC (Sustain Force)
ST (Store all of the above values )

With these values set and stored, it is now time to have the piano calibrate itself and set the minimum
value for playback.

Advanced Calibration of the piano is now possible. The unit will start at note #5, playing loudly
and getting softer when it reaches the point at which the note no longer registers as playing. It will record
the value that it DID get a vibration and go on to the next note. It will end with note #84.
The advanced calibration will take 30 – 40 minutes. While it is not necessary for you to do anything
normally, it is always advisable to be close by to monitor the system and how it is performing.
Occasionally, the system will stop for you to verify a particular condition and then to restart the process
by pressing <YES>.
When the advanced calibration is complete, it will inform you that there were “no problems found” .
At this point, you can press <YES> to finish. The system will archive itself and be ready to play.
