ABSTRACT

An undamped vibration is the response of a vibration system modelled without a

damping or dissipative component, i.e. with only mass and springs elements. For
example, a single-degree-freedom system has one natural frequency which, ideally
continues, without diminishing amplitude. Adding a damping element changes, the
natural frequency and has a declining vibratory amplitude. No real system actually
lacks damping[ CITATION Wil17 \l 1033 ] . Mechanical damping is, generally defined, as
the measure or way a system has to dissipate vibration energy, in the forms of sound
and heat by generated friction. Despite being small in magnitude, mechanical
damping greatly affects the system response near resonant conditions. Its units in SI is
force divided by velocity [N-s/m][ CITATION Jos17 \l 1033 ]. An experiment has been
carried out to determine the period and natural frequency of vibrating system and to
identify the effects of damper in a Single Degree of Freedom vibrating system. This
experiment was performed in a temperature- controlled laboratory. In order to obtain
the natural frequency, the loaded carriage was deflected downward by hand and after
a few seconds upon released, the oscillation of the carriage was recorded. The
wavelength then used to calculate the frequency. An apparatus used for this
experiment is GUNTT TM 105 Universal Vibration System. There are a few
considerations that need to be taken while performing this experiment [ CITATION
App15 \l 1033 ]. The result obtained from this experiment shows that there is a
difference between theoretical and experimental values.
