SEMI - DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10

I. Objectives:
At the end of the class, the students are expected to:
1. Recall how to evaluate permutation;
2. Solve problems involving permutations; and
3. Show willingness and cooperation through group activity

II. Subject Matter

a. Topic: Problems Involving Permutations
b. Reference: Math Builders 10
Pages: 263 - 270
c. Materials: deck of cards, cartolina for visual aids, chalk and board

III. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Greeting
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance
5. Motivation
The teacher will show a magic trick using permutation.

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presenting the Lesson
➢ Permutation
◆ Set of possible arrangement where ORDER is important
Examples of Permutation:
Pageant, arranging book in the book shelf, 100m - race with 3 winners of gold,
silver, and bronze, picture taking and a lot more.
Remember:
n!
The permutation of n objects taken r at a time is: “P(n, r) = (n−r)! ” , where n ≥ r
and the permutation of n objects taken all at a time is P (n, n) = n!
Examples:
Evaluate each given examples:
1. P (4, 2)
2. P (7, 3)
3. P (8, 4)

2. Group Activity
The teacher will group the students into six and she will give the task cards to the
students. Two groups will answer the same problem.
Group 1 & 6
“Finest of them all”
In a pageant, how many possible ways can 2 candidates can be picked from 3
candidates to be the Ms. Gandang Filipina and the first runner-up?
Group 2 & 5
“I deserve to be the first”
Four runners join a race. In how many possible ways can they be arranged as first,
second, and third placers?
Group 3 & 4
“I am your best”
Suppose that in a certain association, there are 4 elected members of the Board of
Directors. In how many ways can a president and a vice president be selected from the
board?
3. Analysis
For Group 1
1. Suppose the candidates are represented by A, B, C. Arrange the letter such as one
will be the Ms. Gandang Matematika and the other will be the first runner up. Do the
pairing as many as you can.
2. How many pair will come up in your lists?
For Group 6
1. If you will use the formula nPr , where n is the number of candidates and r is the
number of winners in order, what is the value of the permutation?
2. How do you relate this value to the number of possible group of winners in the
pageant?
For Group 2
1. Let the runners be represented by M, A, T, and H. What are possible orders of the
contestants that will win the first, second, and the third place?
2. How many group of winners you were able to list?
For Group 5
1. If you will use the formula nPr , where n is the number of runners and r is the
number of winners in order, what is the value of the permutation?
2. How do you relate this value to the number of possible group of winners in the track
race?
For Group 3
1. The members will be represented by C, A, R, and E. What are the possible pair of
president and vice president can be formed?
2. How many group of officers you were able to list?
For Group 4
1. If you will use the formula nPr , where n is the number electionist and r is the
number of winners in order, what is the value of the permutation?
2. How do you relate this value to the number of possible group of officers in the
election?

4. Summarizing the Lesson

Permutation formula is easier to use than the listing formula. The students can easily
distinguish the value of n and r in the problem. The value of n represents the total number
of choices while the value of r represents the number of object taken to the total number
of choices.

5. Evaluation
In a 1/2 crosswise, answer the following questions:
1. In how many ways can 5 people arrange in a row for picture taking?
2. A dress - shop owner has new dresses that she wants to display in the window. If the
display window has 5 mannequins, in how many ways can she dress them up?

6. Home Activity
In your notebook, answer the following problem:
1. If there are 5 persons seated in a circular table, how many ways they can arrange
their self?
2. Find the number of permutations of six colors on a spinner.
