Q1. The practical logarithmic amplifier (using difference amplifier) has VREF = 5 V. It is
required that the output voltage be 0.25 V when the input is 0.5 V. Derive the relationship
between input and output voltage. Hence, determine the voltage gain of the output
difference amplifier. Ans. 4.22

Q2. The 2N6306 power transistor is specified to have TJmax = 200 oC and PDmax = 125 W for TC
≤ 25 oC. For TC ≥ 25oC, θJC=1.4 oC/W. If in a particular application this device is to
dissipate 50 W and operate at an ambient temperature of 25 oC, find the maximum thermal
resistance of the heat sink that must be used (i.e., θSA). Assume θCS = 0.6oC/W. What is the
case temperature, TC? Ans. 1.5 oC/W; 130 oC

Q3. Figure below shows a series feedback voltage regulator. It is designed for a full load
current of 1 A. The unregulated power supply fluctuates from 16 V (at full load) to 20 V
(at no load). A 6.3 V zener diode is used.
Given the power transistor Q1 has the following specifications:
IC(max) = 2 A
VBE = 0.7 V
hfe(min) = 300
PD,rated = 3 W at TC = 25 °C
TJ,max = 150 °C
JA = 41.67 °C /W

(i) Determine the regulated output voltage. Answer: 13.45 V

(ii) Find the power dissipated by transistor Q1 at full load current (assume IL ≈ IE1).
From the result, determine whether a heatsink is required by the transistor Q1 if the
circuit is operated at an ambient temperature of 60 °C. Answer: 2.55 W, Yes

Q4. Both regulators shown below are used to provide a regulated output voltage Vo of 5V. The
nominal source voltage VS is 12V. Both zener diodes have IZK of 10mA, both transistors
have hFE of 100, and RL = 100. Compare their efficiency. Answer: 2%, 34.4 %

Q5. A series feedback regulator (shown below) with a regulated output voltage of 12 V and a
rated load current of 1 A is to be designed. The unregulated power supply has a voltage VS
= 18±3V. The pass transistor has a maximum rating of 2A and hFE1(min) = 125. The
transistor acting as the error detector has a rating of hFE(min) = 400. A 5.6 V zener diode is
used and it requires an operating current of 10 mA. Design the series feedback regulator by
determining the required values of R, R1, R2 and R3.
Use the following design rules:
Half of the zener current comes from the source via R
Base current of Q2 << feedback current
Answer: 1.88 kΩ, 4.56 kΩ, 5.04 kΩ, 177 Ω

Q7. Sketch the block diagram to show how an analog multiplier can be built using log amp and
antilog amp.
