C1. A 250 kVA, 11000/415 V, 50 Hz transformer has 80 turns on the secondary. Calculate i) rated
primary and secondary currents ii) number of primary turns iii) Maximum value of flux in the core
iv) voltage induced /turn on secondary

Ans: I1 = 22.72A, I2 = 602.4A, N1 = 2120, ϕm = 23.36mWb, 5.18V

C2. The primary winding of a 25 KVA transformer has 200 turns and is connected to 230V, 50
Hz supply. The secondary turns are 50. Calculate i) no load secondary emf ii) full load primary
and secondary currents iii) the flux density in the core if the cross section of the core 60 cm2.

Ans: E2 = 57.5V, : I1 = 108.7A, I2 = 434.78A, ϕm = 5.18mWb, Bm = 0.863 µWb/cm2

C3. A transformer is rated at 100 kVA. At full load its copper loss is 1200W and iron loss 960W
Calculate i) efficiency of full load at UPF ii) efficiency at half load 0.8 p.f. iii) load KVA at which
maximum efficiency occurs iv) Maximum efficiency at 0.85 p.f.

Ans: i) 97.88%, ii) 96.94%, iii) 89.443 kVA iv) 97.23%

C4. A 4 kVA, 200/400 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gave the following test results.

OC test (LV side): 200V 1A 100W

SC test (HV side): 15V 10A 85W

Calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer as referred to the primary and draw
the equivalent circuit diagram. Also find efficiency at 0.9 power factor if operating at rated load.

Ans. R0 = 400 ohm, X0 = 231 ohm, R01 = 0.212 ohm, X01 = 0.308 ohm, η = 95.11%

T1. A 5kV A; 240=2400V; 50Hz single phase transformer has the maximum value of flux density
as 1 Tesla. If the emf per turn is 10. Calculate the number of primary and secondary turns and the
primary and secondary current at full load.

Ans: N1 = 24, N2 = 240, I1 = 20.83A, I2 = 2.083A

T2. 50 kVA, 4400/220 V transformer has R1 = 3.45 ohm, R2 = 0.009 ohm, the reactance’s are X1
= 5.2ohm, X2 = 0:015 ohm. Calculate for the transformer. a) full load current on primary and
secondary side b) equivalent resistances, reactance and impedance referred to primary side and
secondary side c) total copper loss using individual resistances and equivalent resistance.

Ans: I1 = 11.36A, I2 = 227.27A, R01 = 7. 05, R02 = 0.02, X01 = 11.2, X02 = 0.028, Z01 = 13.23, Z02
= 0.03, Wcu = 910.08W, Wcu = 909.8W
T3. A 230/110 V, single phase transformer takes an input of 350 VA at no load and at rated voltage.
The core loss is 110 W. Find the iron loss component of no-load current, magnetizing component
of no load current and no-load power factor.

Ans. Iw = 0.477A, Im = 1.44A, pf = 0.314

T3. A 200/400 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gave the following test results.

OC test (LV side) :200V 0.7A 70W

SC test (HV side) 15V 10A 85W

Calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer as referred to the primary and draw
the equivalent circuit diagram.

Ans. R0 = 571.43 ohm, X0 = 329.9 ohm, R01 = 0.212 ohm, X01 = 0.308 ohm

T4. A 5kVA, 200/400V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gave the following test results.

OC test (LV side): 200V 0.7A 60W

SC test (HV side): 22V 16A 120W

a) Calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer referred to LV side and draw the
equivalent circuit diagram.

b) Efficiency at 0.9 power factor leading if operating at full load.

Ans: R0 = 666.67, X0 = 317.46, R01 = 0.12, X01 = 0.32 η = 97.13%

T5. A 50 kVA, 3300/330 V, single phase transformer has iron loss and full load copper loss
400Wand 600 W respectively. Calculate the efficiency at half full load and 0.9 p.f. also calculate
the load at which the efficiency is maximum

Ans: η = 97.6%, 40.823 kVA

H1. A 100 kVA, 6000/400V 50 Hz single phase transformer has 100 turns in the secondary. Find
i) full load primary and secondary currents ii) number of turns in the primary coil iii) maximum
flux in the core

Ans: I1 = 16.67A, I2 = 250A, N1 = 1500, ϕm = 18.01mWb

H3. A 200 kVA, 10000/400V 50 Hz single phase transformer has 200 turns on the secondary.
Calculate i) Primary and secondary currents ii) number of primary turns iii) maximum value of
flux iv) flux density at area is 18 cm2.

Ans: I1 = 20A, I2 = 500 A, N1 = 5000, ϕm = 9 mWb, Bm = 0.5 mWb/cm2
