Ideal transformer

1- A 50KVA, 400/2000V, single phase transformer delivers a load of 40 KVA at


2000V and 0.8 PF lagging. Assume the transformer is ideal. Find:
a) The load impedance.
b) The load impedance referred to primary.

2- A single phase 10:1 ideal transformer has a primary voltage of 39.8KV and a
primary power of 1000 KVA at 0.8 PF lagging Find the load impedance
connected to the secondary winding.

3- Calculate the turns ratio , voltage and volt-ampere rating of an ideal


transformer so that maximum power is transferred to a resistive load of 1Ω
from a source with internal voltage of 250 V and series resistance of 36 Ω

Approximate equivalent circuit

4- A 10KVA, 480/120V, single phase transformer has the following parameters:


R1=O.6 Ω X1=1 Ω
R2=37.5*10 Ω

X2=62.5*10-3 Ω
Gc= 0.333*10-3 Ω Bm=2*10-3 Ω

Use the approximate equivalent circuit to calculate the voltage and current at
the primary terminals for a load of 10KVA at 120V and PF 0.85 lagging. Also
calculate the power loss in the secondary winding, primary winding and in the
core as well as the efficiency of the transformer.

5- A 50 KVA, 400/2000V, single phase transformer has the following parameter:


R1=0.02 Ω R2=0.5 Ω
X1=0.06 Ω X2=1.5 Ω
Gc=2ms Bm=6ms
The transformer supplies a load of 40KVA at 2000 V and 0.8PF lagging.
Calculate the primary voltage, current and the efficiency of the transformer
using the approximate equivalent circuit.
6- A 50 KVA 400/2000V. Single phase transformer has the following circuit
parameters referred to the primary:
Zeq=0.04+j0.12 Ω
Assume that the transformer supplies a load of 40 kVA at 2000V and 0.8 PF
lagging. Calculate the primary voltage and efficiency.

7- The load at the end of a feeder is 100A at 0.85 PF and 132V. the feeder’s
impedance is:
Z3= 0.003+0.01 Ω
Power is supplied to the feeder by a 10:1 transformer whose impedance referred
to the primary is
Z2= 4+j8 Ω
Find the voltage, current and power factor at the sending end of the supply.

Performance:

8- The equivalent impedance referred to the primary of 500 kVA. 2300/230V


single phase transformer is:
Z= 0.2+j0.6 Ω
Calculate the percentage voltage regulation when the transformer delivers rated
capacity at 0.8 PF lagging at rated secondary voltage. Find the efficiency of the
transformer at this condition given that core losses at rated voltage are 2 kW.

Tests:

9- A 500 kVA. 2300/230 V, simple phase transformer is tested to find the


equivalent circuit parameters. The following data are obtained:
open circuit test: V2=230 V, I2=94 A, P2=2250 W
Short circuit test: V1=100 V, I1=230 A, P1=9.2 kW
Find the equivalent circuit parameters referred to the primary.

10- A 100 kVA, 60 Hz, 12000/240 V, single phase transformer is tested to obtain
the equivalent circuit parameters using a short circuit test. The voltage applied
to the 12000 V side is 600 V with a short circuit current equal to the rated
current value and short circuit power of 1200 W.
a. Find the parameter R and X of the transformer.
b. Assume that the transformer supplies a load of 100kVA at 240V and
0.8 PF lagging on the secondary side. Find the voltage required at the
primary side and the power factor.
