Sheet 1 Generation of High Voltage (Ac)

1. A 100 kVA 250 V/200 kV feed transformer has resistance and reactance of 1% and 5%
respectively. This transformer is used to test a cable at 400 kV at 50 Hz. The cable takes a
charging current of 0.5 A at 400 kV. Determine the series inductance required. Assume 1%
resistance of the inductor. Also determine input voltage to the transformer. Neglect dielectric loss
of the cable.

2. A 100 kVA, 50 Hz, 230/50 kV testing transformer has an 8% leakage reactance and a 2%
winding resistance. A cable of capacitance 15 nF is to be tested at 250 kV using this transformer
as part of the resonance circuit. Determine the value of the inductance (Q-factor = 20) required
to obtain resonance and the value of the input voltage required. (Q-factor = XL/r )

3. A 220 V /345 kV, 200 kVA testing transformer to be used for cable testing has 10%
leakage reactance and 2% resistance. The cable has to be tested at 600 kV, 60 Hz while charging
current is 0.5A. Find the required value of the series inductor to be connected with the transformer
to achieve resonance. Assume (Rind = 1.8% of Xind). Find the primary voltage of the transformer
during this test. Also calculate rated current of this transformer and the input power

4. Draw and explain equivalent circuit of a 3-stage cascaded transformer

5. What is the necessity for generating high voltages?
6. Explain the resonant circuit and discuss its advantages and disadvantages.
