Assignment (Transformers)

1. The equivalent circuit of a 4 kVA, 200/400V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer is as shown
below refferred to lv side. Assuming a current of 10 A at lagging p.f. of 0.8 in the high
voltage winding, determine
(i) Total current in primary winding
(ii) Terminal voltage at hv side
(iii) Efficiency at full load

2. A 50 kVA, 11000 V/ 440 V, 50 Hz, single phase

transformer has a primary winding resistance of 7.8 Ω and a secondary winding
resistance of 0.0085 Ω. Calculate the equivalent resistances referred to the primary and
secondary sides and from them calculate the full-load copper loss.

secondary winding resistance of 2 Ω and 0.02 Ω respectively. The iron losses equal 412

of the load is 0.80.
4. A transformer is designed to operate at a power frequency 50 Hz is operated at power
frequency of 25 Hz . comment briefly on the performance of transfomer. Assuming
input primary voltage to be constant for both the cases.
5. Define equivalent resistance and equivalent leakage reactance of a transfomer.
6. Explain the working principle of a 1- phase transformer and derive an emf equation for
the same
7. Explain the working of transformer from no-load to full-load condition.
8. A transformer has a primary winding of 800 turns and secondary winding of 200 turns.
When the load current on the secondary is 80A at 0.8 p.f. lagging, the primary current is
25 A at 0.707 p.f. lagging. Determine the no-load current of the transformer and its
phase with respect to the primary voltage.

lagging power factor at which the voltage regulation is maximum and the value of this
regulation.
10.A 10 kVA, 500/250 V, single-phase transformer has its maximum efficiency of 94% when
delivering 90% of its rated output at unity p.f. Estimate its efficiency when delivering its

11.The maximum efficiency of a 500 kVA, 3300/500 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer is
97% and occurs at 3/4th full-load u.p.f. If the impedance is 10% calculate the regulation
at fullload, 0.8 p.f. Lag.
