Q1. A three -phase step-down transformer is energized from 11KV, 50 Hz source. If it takes a
line current of 20 A from the supply mains, then calculate the output voltage, output current
and output kVA for each of the following connections:
a) Star/star
b) Star/delta
c) delta/star
d) delta/delta
The magnetizing current and losses are ignored. Per phase turns ratio is 44.
Q. 2 A step down transformer is connected to three-phase, 6 kV supply. The supply current is
12A. The ratio of turns per phase is 10. Determine the secondary line voltage, the line current
and the output for the following connections:
(1) Star/Star
(2) Delta/ Delta
(3) Star/ Delta
(4) Delta/Star
Do not consider the losses.

Q3 A 10 kVA, 1-phase distribution transformer has a core loss of 35 W and full load copper loss
of 90 W. The daily variation of load on the transformer is as follows:
5 a.m. to 1 p.m. : 3 kW at 0.60 p.f.
1 p.m. to 4 p.m. : 8 kW at 0.8 p.f.
4 p.m. to 1 a.m. : full load at u.p.f.
1 a.m. to 5 a.m. : no load
Determine all day efficiency of the transformer.

Q.4 Two 1-phase transformers with equal turns have impedance of (0.5+j3) ohm and (0.6+j10)
ohm with respect to secondary. If they operate in parallel, determine how they will share a total
load of 100 Kw at p.f. 0.8 lagging?

Q.5 Two single-phase transformers A and B rated at 250 kVA each are operated in parallel on both sides.
Their equivalent impedances for A and B are (1+ j6) Ω and (1.2 + j4.8) Ω respectively. Calculate the
load shared by each transformer when the total load is 500 kVA at 0.8 power factor lagging.

Q6. A short-shunt compound dc generator delivers 100 A to a load at 250 V. The generator has
shunt field, series filed and armature resistance of 130ohm, 0.1 ohm and 0.1ohm resp. Calculate
the voltage generated in armature winding. Assume 1 V drop per brush.

Q7. A long-shunt compound generator delivers a load current of 50 A at 500 V, and the
resistances of armature, series filed and shunt fields are 0.05ohm, 0.03 ohm and 250V
respectively. Calculate the generated emf and the armature current. Allow 1.0 V per brush drop
for contact drop.
Q.8 Explain Swinburne’s test.
Q.9 Explain Hopkinson’s test.
Q. 10 The armature and the filed resistance of a DC shunt motor is 100 Ω and 0.4 Ω respectively. Its
no-load current is 5A when connected across a DC supply of 300 V. Calculate its efficiency at 40 A
input current.

Q11. A 220V, 1500rmp, 10A separately-excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 1 ohm.
It is fed from a single-phase fully-controlled bridge rectifier with an ac source voltage of 230V,
50Hz. Assuming continuous load current, compute:
a) Motor speed at the firing angle of 30° and torque of 5Nm
b) Developed torque at the firing angle of 45° and speed of 1000rpm.

Q12. The speed of a separately-excited dc motor is controlled by means of a three phase semi-
converter from a three-phase, 415V, 50 Hz supply. The motor constants are: inductance 10mH,
resistance 0.9 ohm and armature constant 1.5V/rad/s (Nm/A). Calculate the speed of this motor
at a torque of 50 Nm when the converter is fired at 45°. Neglect losses in the converter.
