OBJECT: Measurement of resistance, capacitance, DC voltage, AC voltage, DC current, Ac

current and checking of electrical components using multimeter.

APPARATUS USED: Digital multimeter scientific SM 7023, resistors, diode, transistor, led &
capacitor.

METHOD:

(a) Measurement of resistance:

i) Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “VΩHz” jack on mulitimeter.
ii) Set the function switch to Ω range.
iii) Press “RANGE” to select Auto/ manual measurements.
iv) If measuring small resistance, one should short circuit the leads first. Press “REL”
one time and measure the unknown resistance.
(b) Measurement of capacitance:

i) Set the FUCNTION switch to position.

ii) Press “REL” once to adjust to zero
iii) Connect the capacitor to“COM”, “VΩHz” input sockets in accordance to the leads
( the polarity of red lead if positive).
iv) Value of the capacitance will be displayed on LCD.

(c) DC voltage measurement:

i) Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “VΩHz” jack on mulitimeter.
ii) Set the function switch to “V---“ range.
iii) The default range is Auto range and AUTO is displayed.
iv) Pressing range key to manual range, 400mV/4V,40V/400V/ 1000V can be selected.
v) Connect the test leads to test point.
vi) Value of the voltage will be displayed on LCD.
vii) If “OL” is displayed it means over range. Shift the range to high level for correct
reading.

(d) AC voltage measurement:

i. Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “VΩHz” jack on mulitimeter.
ii. Set the function switch to “V~“ range.
iii. The default range is Auto range and AUTO is displayed.
iv. Pressing range key to manual range, 400mV/4V,40V/400V/ 700V can be selected
v. Connect the test leads to test point.
vi. Value of the voltage will be displayed on LCD.
vii. If “OL” is displayed it means over range. Shift the range to high level for correct
reading.

(e) DC current measurement:

i) Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “mA or 10A” jack on
mulitimeter
ii) Set the function switch to “current“ range.
iii) Press SELECT key to dc measurement mode.
iv) Connect the lead to test points.
v) Value of the dc current will be displayed on LCD.
vi) If “OL” is displayed it means over range. Shift the range to high level for correct
reading.

(f) AC current measurement:

i) Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “mA or 10A” jack on
mulitimeter
ii) Set the function switch to “current“ range.
iii) Press SELECT key to ac measurement mode.
iv) Connect the lead to test points.
v) Value of the dc current will be displayed on LCD.

(g) Diode test:

i. Connect the black lead to “COM” jack and red lead to “VΩHz” jack on mulitimeter
ii. Set the FUNCTION switch to “Ω” position..
iii. Forward measure: connect RED lead to the positive of the test diode and black lead
to the negative.
iv. Finite value of resistance will be displayed.
v. Reverse measure: connect RED lead to the negative of the test diode and black lead
to the positive.
vi. High value of resistance will be displayed.

(f) Transistor test:

Transistor can be tested using multi-meter but before that one should know the pin
configurations which are shown in the figure below:

Step 1: (Base to Emitter)

Hook the positive lead from the multimeter to the BASE (B) of the transistor. Hook the negative
meter lead to the EMITTER (E) of the transistor. For a good NPN transistor, the meter should
show a voltage drop between 0.45V and 0.9V. If you are testing PNP transistor, you should see
“OL” (Over Limit).

Step 2: (Base to Collector)

Keep the positive lead on the BASE (B) and place the negative lead to the COLLECTOR (C).

For an good NPN transistor, the meter should show a voltage drop between 0.45V and 0.9V. If
you are testing PNP transistor, you should see "OL" (Over Limit).

Step 3: (Emitter to Base)

Hook the positive lead from the multimeter to the EMITTER (E) of the transistor. Hook the
negative meter lead to the BASE (B) of the transistor.

For a good NPN transistor, you should see “OL” (Over Limit). If you are testing PNP transistor,
the meter should show a voltage drop between 0.45V and 0.9V.

Step 4: (Collector to Base)

Hook the positive lead from the multimeter to the COLLECTOR (C) of the transistor. Hook the
negative meter lead to the BASE (B) of the transistor.

For a good NPN transistor, you should see “OL” (Over Limit). If you are testing PNP transistor,
the meter should show a voltage drop between 0.45V and 0.9V.

Step 5: (Collector to Emitter)

Hook the positive meter lead to the COLLECTOR (C) and the negative meter lead to the
EMITTER (E) – A good NPN or PNP transistor will read "OL"/Over Limit on the meter. Swap
the leads (Positive to Emitter and Negative to Collector) – Once again, a good NPN or PNP
transistor should read “OL”.

If bipolar transistor measures contrary to these steps, it may considered as bad.

RESULT: Various electrical components such as resistance, capacitance, DC voltage, AC

voltage, DC current, Ac current and checking of electrical components (diode and transistor) was
done using multimeter.
