Just Do It

A pleasant morning everyone, as you all have witnessed, I just grab a Grab and I apologize for

not being on time. Look at my hair, it is flicking everywhere. It feels the stress I am feeling right now. It

all began when my car stopped for no reason nearby FCM with me being oblivious of what is happening,

which made the traffic even heavier as expected during Tuesday mornings. Even though I’m late, I’m still

a hardworking citizen of the Republic of the Philippines who pay taxes and don’t evade it, I opened my

Grab App and searched for the nearest driver available just for me to overcome this situation. While on

our way, I’m a bit uncomfortable of the driver looking at me like I know I’m pretty but why does it look

like he’s judging me down to my soul? Then the silence broke out when he finally asked me, “Kasi mam

nagtataka ako kung bakit nagcocommute yung CEO ng Grab, wala po ba kayong assakyan mam?” then

took me a minute to get me back on my senses, oh, by the way I am Riza Mae Alce the CEO of Grab

Philippines.

According to Eugene TamboleroCantara, a product specialist/medical representative of Al

Futtaim Group – Retail,“We are well-known to be hardworking, with the ability to work well with others,

whatever be the race, ethnicity or gender orientation.” We thought that there is no limitation with our

fellowmen’s ability, especially in adapting things, but sadly there is, the resources that every individual

acquires is being suppressed by some of those who are in the summit of success, especially the abusive

ones. I know everyone knows this phrase, “Ang mayaman ay mas lalong yumayaman at ang mahirap ay

mas lalong humihirap.” Which utters how our society works. There are various opportunities that can

and must be given to everyone but is being cut down and only on those who have power and riches

benefit. Actually, the opportunity is already in your hands by opening your phone, proceeding to the

App Store or Google Play and download the Grab App.

So, what is the Grab app itself and its services? Grab is the Southeast Asia’s leading on-demand

transportation and fintech (financial technology) platform. It solves critical transportation challenges and

makes transport freedom reality for 620 million people in Southeast Asia, according to Craig (2019).

People only know some of its various services that Grab offers: first, is the most common in terms of

transportation which are the GrabTaxi, GrabCar and GrabBike; second, speaking of sharing a ride there

are GrabShare, GrabHitch, GrabShuttle that will provide; third, in the field of financing which includes

the Grab Financial and Grab Pay; and lastly, it also has an online healthcare service with the help of

GrabHealth. This platform aims to provide the safest transportation, make it accessible for everyone,

help their partners improve their lifestyle and bring Southeast Asia to the digital economy.

Grab’s style of business is way too different from other transportation businesses because they

do not own any vehicle used in their operations when entered in the Philippines. According to Valdez

(2018), our country was not used of their new approach to the transportation business that results their

operation to grow the slowest in terms of development in Southeast Asia due to the halt ordered by the

government. With the halt, losses are expected and are forecasted by the end of the year and still not

expecting to earn income any time sooner. It had not made any net income for the past years since

when it entered the Philippines because of these losses, the Grab Philippines is dependent on its

headquarters to fund its operation. The same how Amazon experienced, from a decade of net loss until

it finally gains profit and changes people’s view. As Mr. Brian Cu, the president of Grab Philippines, “It is

not the right time. We are still building our foundation” With all the tragic happenings, there is nothing

to worry because it does not indicate Grab’s end yet is only an obstacle like every successful business

faces.
That expected result in the future is still not a guarantee to happen, so we should keep on

looking for new ideas and services that we can still offer not just for us to improve our financial standing

but also for us to satisfy the needs and wants of our customers. They are planning to diversify, to

connect different aspects of business in one to create its own ecosystem. Just what Alibaba Group did.

We cannot just stop developing and innovating just because we are not gaining, but because we believe

that there are people who believe that our services can give them a good life.

It all started in the year 2012 when he confessed his feelings ... to my friend, just kidding! But it

was the same year when Grab started which was founded by Anthony Tan and Tan Hooi Ling in

Malaysia. At first, it was just a mere taxi app and named MyTeksi and on July 10 in the same year, it was

announced that they will start to offer lifestyle service in partnership with other consumer businesses

for it to create its own ecosystem. With its new open platform, it allows partners to access its user

database, mapping system, logistics, and other resources. Its first new service is online grocery

shopping. Since it was developed by Malaysians, so they want to focus on the Southeast Asian markets.

The growth is way too rapid due to the region’s underdeveloped public transportation systems. Finally,

they are already operating in different 8 countries. On the year 2018, they just acquired and became the

victor of 5 years of fierce competition with Uber Technologies. That result for their dominance in the

region and sped up growth. Diversification is the answer. So in the year 2016, Grab started exploring

food deliveries and mobile payments. The Grab continues to raise funds to invest in technology. They

now have 6 research and development centers. Tan now is claiming that Grab will become the

“everyday superapp”.
Do you know the feeling of how hard is it to have a handsome crush? It feels like you want to

sing Narda “Kung kaagaw ko ang lahat. May pagasa bang makilalaka.” There are so many competitors.

That you are going to compete with, hovering around your assumed baby. It is the same with Grab. The

chance to have competitors within this market is way too possible since the medium that they are using

can be accessed by anyone. According to an article “Grab Competitors In the Philippines, Now Available

On Google Play Store And Apple App Store”, that there are five companies that deliver services that are

more or less similar to that of Grab Ride-Hailing Platform, that the LTFRB accredited for the year 2018.

These five are OWTO, GoLag, HirNa, MiCab, and Hype, which are all unique in their own ways. OWTO is

particularly proud of its security system, which guarantees quick action and investigation for every

complaint filed by a rider, GoLag short for "Go Laguna" - currently serves riders in Mega Manila and

promises lower rates, HirNa is based in Davao but has plans to expand across the country, MiCab, which

doesn't impose price surges, has 10,000 cabs spread in key cities around the Philippines, Hype is

supposedly a lot like Grab but it also offers the option to hail a ride via SMS. Increased competition and

regulatory hurdles, however, mean that moving forward has been far from easy. Tan is confident the

company can meet the challenges head-on. That this platform is already used for competition. We

embrace competition. In fact, we love it because that makes us innovate faster.

Grab did not experience that smooth sailing journey, but they head- on a really rough road,

which they think will be worthy to fight for. Lacking in resources, common sense mistakes and not

meeting the ideal standards do not mean failures. Never let these difficulties demotivate you from

achieving your goal. You can be successful by how: always remember that hard work will always pay off;

just stick to your vision; try to challenge your environment by exploring it tough yet in a careful way;

think outside the box which could lead us having lots of possibilities; acquiring the trait of optimism in

times of struggles; not letting your idea stay as an idea; and trying to create or make it by means of

putting effort and action. Just do it.
