Aim: - Design four different types of Common
Source Amplifier.
Theory: -
Common Source Amplifier
In this amplifier, input signal is applied between gate and source and the
amplified output voltage is developed across a load resistor in the drain circuit.
Thus, source is the common terminal between the input side and the output side.

The common source amplifier gain is Av = -gmRD . As a transconductance

amplifier, the input voltage is seen as modulating the current going to the load.
As a voltage amplifier, input voltage modulates the amount of current flowing
through the FET, changing the voltage across the output resistance according to
Ohm's law. However, the FET device's output resistance typically is not high
enough for a reasonable transconductance amplifier (ideally infinite), nor low
enough for a decent voltage amplifier (ideally zero).
Since gm itself varies with the input signal according to
gm=μnCoxW/L(VGS−VTH) the gain of the circuit changes substantially if the
signal is large. In other words, if the gain of the circuit varies significantly with
the signal swing, then the circuit operates in the large signal mode.

Calculations: -
Let
Vth = 0.5v, Un*Cox = 1200uF/V-s, W/L = 10 , Vgs = 1.2v , RD = 2k, RS = 10
Then,
1. CS with resistive load amplifier: -

IDS = ½ * Un*Cox* W/L*(Vgs - Vth)2

= ½ *1200*10-6 *10*(1.2 - 0.5)2
= 2.94 mA

gm = 2*IDS/(Vgs - Vth)
= 0.0084 ohm-1

Av = Vout/Vin = -gm*RD
= -0.0084*2
= -16.8
2. CS with current source amplifier: -

IDS = ½ * Un*Cox* W/L*(Vgs - Vth)2

= ½ *1200*10-6 *1000*(1.2 - 0.5)2
= 294 mA

gm = 2*IDS/(Vgs - Vth)
= 0.84 ohm-1

Av = Vout/Vin = -gm
= -0.84
3. CS with diode connected load amplifier: -

IDS = ½ * Un*Cox* W/L*(Vgs - Vth)2

= ½ *1200*10-6 *10*(1.2 - 0.5)2
= 2.94 mA

gm = 2*IDS/(Vgs - Vth)
= 0.0084 ohm-1

4. CS with source degenration amplifier: -

Conclusion: -
I have built all the schematics of different types of common Source
amplifier using Tanner EDA tool. My observations are correct. I have
successfully got required gain as output. Hence, I have successfully
completed this experiment.
