Source: Making Music, K Edition

Materials needed: CD 2 From Making Music.

Procedure: Anticipatory set, instructional input, modeling, check for understanding,

practice, closure.

A.S: “Has anyone here ever played Simon Says before? So if I asked you to tap your
heads with your hand could you do it? Touch your toes? Awesome, great job everyone!
These skills are called non-locomotor skills. Basically you stay in place while you move
side to side or up and down. Today we are going to use these skills and we are also
going to listen to some songs and follow along to the instructions we hear, okay? We
need to be sure and listen carefully so we don’t miss what they say.

1. Remind students to keep their hands to themselves. Introduce each of the movements:
clap, tap your toes, hop on one foot, wiggle around, slap your knees, and stomp your feet.
Play CD 2-5, follow along to the instructions and model for them.
2. Move on to the Penguin song. “Who has ever seen a penguin before? How does a
penguin move….Well in this next song we are going to move like a penguin.”
3. Play the song first, let them think of how they should move to the song; either to the
words or music.
4. Everyone do the penguin dance!
5. Introduce the last song, the Mario slide. “This one has no words and we aren’t going to
listen to it ahead of time, let’s just move in the way that first comes to our mind.
6. Closure: Who can remind me what a non-locomotor movement is? What are some
examples? Was there any difference between how we danced as a penguin and as
ourselves?

Educational Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will have learned . . . what
non-locomotor skills are and how they can be used to dance to a song.
