Effects of early illiteracy to the society

It is a known fact that early illiteracy has long been thought by early childhood educators
and educators in general as a crucial issue. The term ‘Early illiteracy’ is when a child lacks the
proficient literacy and early learning skills. Early literacy skills can be developed through many
ways like talking, reading, playing, singing and writing. Children who aren’t able to develop
strong literacy suffer greatly later in life and might have a higher chance of not continuing their
tertiary education. Because of this, they may end up earning less income compared to their peers
and are the least skilled citizen. Consequently, they may also end up turning towards a life of
committing crimes.

Solutions on how to decrease illiteracy

To ensure that early illiteracy can be decreased and possibly be eliminated all together,
there are several actions that can be taken. Firstly, is by creating support groups in school.
Teachers play a very vital role in recognizing if a student does indeed struggle with literacy.
Some children might pretend that they are able to read and write if this is not dealt with. If
schools do develop a program to overcome and address this issue by establishing support groups,
we maybe we able to overcome early illiteracy.

The second way to overcome this issue is by establishing more remedial institutions or
centre’s that can cater to everyone no matter their household income. There are some
communities that may not be able to afford the proper literacy education for their child’s need.
NGOs and government bodies play an important part in making this a reality. By allocating a
certain amount of money for these establishments, NGOs and government bodies will be able
help less fortunate communities who cannot afford private institutions that help children to better
develop literacy skills. Illiteracy remedial institution might be to expensive for some families to
afford. Therefore affordable services should be made available for the public. By doing this,
they will be able to help children to overcome illiteracy issues.

The third way on how to overcome early illiteracy is by involving children in activities
that use literacy. Parent’s play a very important role in ensuring that their child develops the right
literacy and learning skills. There is only so much a teacher can do. When parents involve their
children in activities that involve literacy they may be able to eliminate illiteracy. Talking to
them, communicating and explaining in a easy and simple manner can help develop a child’s
literacy. For example, getting durable board books of animals and everyday things with few
words for babies and toddlers can help with teach early literacy to them.
