Differences between management and leadership by reading Ali Algahtani article published in
Journal of Management Policies and Practices, Vol. 2(3), September 2014.

Leadership and management look the same but they have its own differences. In this article the author
tried to identified the differences by comparing the management and the leadership in form of definition
and skills. Although, it mainly describe that leaders focus on vision and goals and keeping themselves
sure that followers are going in the right direction. Thus, We will try to sort out some of main differences
between management and leadership by reading Ali Algahtani article published in Journal of
Management Policies and Practices, Vol. 2(3), September 2014.

First we will focus on some of definitions regarding management and leadership that different authors
described. Management involves developing staffing, mentoring persons with high potential and
resolving conflicts while maintaining ethics and discipline. On the other hand, management deal with
planning, organizing, budgeting, coordinating and monitoring activities of organizations where group of
people are working and overall aim is to achieve organizational goal. Managers mostly avoid any risk and
work in a established system to direct and control their employees. In fact, an effective manager focus on
good communications, organizational skills, negotiation qualities and delegations skills. On the other
hand, leadership is a quality that focuses on influence, motivation and inspiration thus develop a vision to
obtain a common goal. Leaders have followers and keeps an open on them. A Leader should have
integrity, vision, toughness, decisive, trust, commitment, selflessness, creativity, risk taking,
communication ability, charisma, ability to solve problem, sense of mission and visibility.

Instantly, we are focusing on differences of between management and leadership. Leadership and
management both deals with working with people, involves influence. besides, the aim is to achieve the
common goal. On the other hand, leadership is more complex rather than management. Leaders focus on
the communication, motivation and shared goals. In addition, strategy, structure, systems, shared values,
skills, and style is more effective for leaders compare to managers. Leadership is about motivation.
Bennis and Nannus researchers described the differences in two sentences as “leaders do the right things
and managers do things right.” Other difference is, management is a regular formal responsibility that
cope with complexity and leadership goes beyond routine tasks and cope with change. Management
doesn’t deal with charisma and other personality traits but leadership does. Leaders manage and managers
lead. Management consists of controlling daily problems, and implementing leaders’ vision. Leaders are
good communicator and make the firm ready to face any new change and ensure the development of a
sense of security.

As a result, In the business world; to cope with the changes so leadership becomes an important part of
any organization and for achieving of success in any organization it is must that there should be a leader
or leadership team. While, organizations need managers to maintain a smoothly functioning workplace,
and to utilize resources effectively. So managers and leaders are equally needed in any firm to stress on
vision and goals and achieve the ultimate goal of the organization.
