Counsels From The Elders

It is easy to bear the misfortunes of others.

Far from the eye, far from heart.

Counsel must be followed, not praised.

If you wish good advice, consult an old man .

If the counsel be good, no matter who gave it.

Anger and haste hinder good counsel.

Bachelor’s wives and maids’ children are well taught.

Ambition makes people diligent.

Nothing seek, nothing find.

Hitch your wagon to a star.

There is always room at the top.

Hasty climbers have sudden falls.

Anger punishes itself.

When a man is angry , he can not be in the right.

When angry , count a hundred.

Delay is the antidote of anger.

When you enter in to a house , leave the anger ever at the door.

Never spend your money before you have it.


Do not bargain for fish which are still in the water.

Appearances are deceptive.

The face is no index to the heart.

If the beard were all, the goat might preach.

Never judge from appearances.

Better to ask the way than go astray.

Like question, like answer.

If you wish to know a man , give him authority.

One master in a house is enough.

One must be a servant , before one can be a master.

Sin is the roof of sorrow.

Who swims in sin shall sink in sorrow.

He that mischief hatches, mischief catches.

Every sin brings its punishment with it.

A bad penny always turn up.

Beauty is only one layer.

Goodness is better than beauty.

No root, no fruit.
The first blow is half of the battle.

First impressions are the most lasting.

Faith will move mountains.

We soon believe what we desire.

Belief is better than investigation.

Nurture and good manners makes man.

Virtue is the only true nobility.

Do not change horses in midstream.

A rolling stone gathers no moss.

One can not put back the clock.

A man’s studies pass in to his character.

Children and fools can not lie.

When children hear at home, soon flies abroad.

Spare when you are young, and spend when you are old.

Cleanliness is next to godliness.

The buyer needs a hundred eyes , the seller but one.

Better be alone than in a bad company.

A man is known by his friends.


Do right and fear no man.

Who is in fault suspects everybody.

Respect a man, he will do the more.

Content is happiness.

Who is contented, enjoys.

Fish begins to sink at the head.

If you lie down with dogs, you will get up with fleas.

The weapon of the brave is in his heart.

Cowards die many times before their deaths.

Hard words break no bones.

Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Cruelty deserves no mercy.

When the fox preaches , then beware your geese.

If you play with fire, you get burnt.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Nothing so certain as death.

Death does not recognize strength.

Death keeps no calendar.


Such a life , such a death.

Dying men speak true.

Where there is whispering , there is lying.

A liar is not believed, when he speaks the truth.

Doing is better than saying.

Man punishes the action, but God punishes the intention.

Do well and have well.

Never put off till tomorrow, what you can do today.

No flying from fate.

Everyone to his taste.

No bees , no honey; no work, no money.

No pains, no gains.

Diligence is the mother of good fortune.

Water is the king of food.

Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy , wealthy and wise.

He that comes first to the hill, may sit where he will.

Eat to live and not to live to eat.


Never too late to learn.

Think on the end , before you begin.

He conquers who endures.

Speak well of your friend, of your enemy.

Practise what you preach.

Trouble brings experience and experience brings wisdom.

The eyes are the window of the soul.

A good name is better than riches.

Empty vessels make the greatest sound.

Wise man silent, fools talk.

He is wise who looks ahead.

He who forgives others , God forgives him.

Try your friend, before you trust.

Friendship can not stand always on one side.

Love your friend with his fault.

The hand that gives , gathers .

Alms never make poor.

Good men suffer much.

Set good against devil.

Habit is a second nature.

Old habits die hard.

Pleasant hours fly fast.

First think , and then speak.

Many hands make light work.

Honesty is the best policy.

He is wise that is honest.

Hope keeps man alive.

Hunger breaks stone walls.

Science has no enemy , but the ignorant.

He who makes no mistakes, makes nothing.

No convenience without its inconvenience.

Knowledge is power.

A little learning is a dangerous thing.

Too much liberty spoils all.

Life is short and time is swift.

Life begins at forty.

A mother’ love is best of all.


Measure is treasure.

Necessity is a powerful weapon.

Necessity is the mother of invention.

Obedience is the mother of success.

Opportunity seldom knocks twice.

When one door shuts, another opens.

Parents are patterns.

Patience is a virtue.

Religion is the rule of life.

There is a remedy for all things but death.

Everybody’s business is nobody’s business.

Everyman for himself, and God for us all.

Who knows himself knows others.

Speech is silver, silence is golden.

Speak fitly, or be silent wisely.

Many drops make a shower.

A small leak will sink a great ship.

No coming to heaven with dry eyes.

No day passes without some grief.


Spend as you get.

Union is strength.

Failure teaches success.

No pleasure without pain.

When all men speak , no man hears.

Talk much and err much.

Few words are best.

A word is enough to the wise.

The tongue stinks.

Keep something for a rainy day.

Time is money.

Time lost can not be recalled.

Time flies away without delay.

There is no place like home.

Everything is good in its season.

Truth never grows old.

The abundance of money ruins youth.

Wealth is the test of a man’s character.

You can not take it with you, when you die.

Money is not everything.

Health is better than wealth.

A man’s wealth is his enemy.

Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

Wisdom is better than strength.

No man is wise at all times.

The world is a stage and every man plays his part.

The world is a ladder for some to go up and some down.

The world is bound to no man.

Take things as they come.

Words fly, writings remain.

It is good to have company in trouble.

High places have their precipices.

Anger makes a rich man hatred, and a poor man scorned.

Anger has no eyes.

Beauty fades like a flower.

The first step is the hardest.

A man at sixteen will prove a child at sixty.


When children stand quite, they have done some ill.

Every bird loves to hear himself sing.

Gifts blind the eyes.

Despair gives courage to a coward .

All man are mortal.

Dying is as natural as living.

By his deeds we know a man.

Doing is better than saying.

Death makes equal in the grave and unequal in eternity.

A good deed is never lost.

Every shoe fits not every foot.

Experience is the best teacher.

Pardon is the choicest flower of victory.

Forgiveness from the heart is better than a box of gold.

When friends meet, hearts warm.

The gains will quit the pains.

Who chatters to you, will chatter of you.

Time the father of truth.
