Importance Of Planning

Story 1

Hakan and Sabri were friends. They were students of Class 7. Hakan was a quiet and
helpful boy. He was hardworking and reliable. Sabri was restless and talkative. He
liked to help his classmates, but he tried to do too many things at the same time.

Hakan was in charge of the charts, blackboard and desks in the classroom. Sabri
looked after the books, cupboards and stationery.
Hakan was a boy with neat habits. He kept the blackboard clean and arranged the
desks in straight rows. Every Saturday, Hakan would find out what was going to be
taught the coming week. He would hang up the charts which would be needed for the
next week. Hakan took great pride in keeping the classroom neat and tidy. If a chart
fell down, he would pin it up at once. If a desk was not in its place, he would set it
right. Seeing him, his classmates also tried to keep the classroom in order.
Sabri , on the other hand, wanted to do everything at once. He was interested in many
things and was never able to complete anything properly. He was always in a hurry.
The cupboard was often in a mess. He would put books in the wrong place and tell
himself, “I’ll sort them out later.” Then he would start doing something else, and
forget about the books.
One day, the Minister of Education was coming to visit the school. The school looked
very neat and clean. The boys wore clean uniforms. The classrooms looked neat and
tidy.
Hakan had planned all the things he had to do for the Minister’s visit. He had made a
list of what he needed. He came to school early to tidy the classroom. He had also
asked some boys to come early and help him. He had brought a doormat and painted
the wastepaper basket. He had given the old charts to the artists of the class who had
brightened them up. Hakan placed a vase of flowers on the teacher’s desk. The
classroom looked ready for the visit. But where was Sabri?
Sabri came to school at the last moment. His duty was to arrange the books in neat and
orderly piles. Sabri went to the cupboard to take out the books but found that he had
forgotten the keys at home. He had had to borrow a friend’s bicycle and rush home for
the keys.
He returned panting. “I should have also brought a new tablecloth,” he said to himself
the moment he saw the dirty tables on which the books were to be displayed. “I wish I
had thought of it earlier,” he said. He took the books out of the cupboard. The first bell
rang. All the children began to march towards the assembly hall. Sabri hurriedly piled
up the books on the tables and rushed off to join the other children. “I hope the teacher
won’t notice that they are all mixed up,” Sabri muttered to himself.
“Our classroom is looking very neat,” said the teacher as he came in. he then went to
look at the books laid out on the tables. He noticed that a history book was in the
geography pile, a few mathematics notebooks were mixed up with some English
copy-books. “Look at these copy-books, Sabri. They are in the wrong pile. Sabri, you
should be more careful! You never seem to do your task properly,” said the teacher.
“Sorry sir,” said Sabri, “I shall put them right just now.”
Importance Of Planningxx 2
“I will help you, Sabri,” said Hakan, “we have eight subjects, so get eight boys to
help.”
Soon the books were arranged in an orderly fashion. The work was done in a
methodical way.
The Minister arrived at ten o’clock. He visited every classroom. When he came to
class 7, boys were sitting at their desks and the teacher was at he blackboard.
“This looks a very cheerful and neat classroom,” the Minister told the Principal.
Hakan felt happy and satisfied. All the boys and the teacher looked at Hakan and
smiled. Sabri felt guilty. He realised that he did not deserve any praise.
It is important to be interested in our work and to do it well. We must plan ahead to
see that our work is done on time.
It is not nice to be scolded by others for not doing our work properly. People will rely
on us and respect us if we are careful and hard-working. We will also have a sense of
satisfaction and a desire to do still better next time.
Story 2

Have You Done the Way’s Work?

Ramsey was very excited because there was to be a recitation contest in school and
Ramsey was fond of recitation. He had been given ten days to learn his poem.Ramsey
talked of his poem all the time but he did not learn it. When his mother or teacher told
him to do so, he laughed and said, “Oh, there’s plenty of time!”Two days before the
contest Ramsey sat down to learn the poem. But he found it very difficult. He could
not learn it properly. And on the day of the contest, when he stood up to recite, he
could remember only the first two lines.
How do you think Ramsey felt when he could not remember the poem?
Story 3

The Dog and the Oyster

A dog, used to eating eggs, saw an oyster and, opening his mouth to its widest extent,
swallowed it down with the utmost relish, supposing it to be an egg. Soon afterwards
suffering great pain in his stomach, he said, “I deserve all this torment, for my folly in
thinking that everything round must be an egg.”
“They who act without sufficient thought, will often fall into unsuspected danger.”
Story 4

The Frogs and the Well

Two frogs lived together in marsh. But one hot summer the marsh dried up, and they
left it to look for another place to live in: for frogs like damp places if they can get
them. By and by they came to a deep well, and one of them looked down into it, and
said to the other, “This looks a nice cool place. Let us jump in and settle here.” But the
other, who had a wiser head on his shoulders, replied, “Not so fast, my friend.
Supposing this well dried up like the marsh, how should we get out again?”
“Look before you leap.”

Time is Precious

To realize the value of One Year,

Ask a student who has failed in his exam.
To realize the value of One Month,
Ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby.
To realize the value of One Week,
Ask a weekly’s editor.
To realize the value of One Day,
Ask a daily-wage laborer.
To realize the value of One Hour,
Ask the lovers who are eager to meet.
To realize the value of One Minute,
Ask the person who has missed the train.
To realize the value of One Second,
Ask the person who has survived an accident.
To realize the value of One Mili-Second,
Ask the person who has missed the Gold Medal in the Olympics.
For reaping good results, a systematic and efficient person respects time and
distributes it methodically so that none of it is lost. Well managed time discourages
idleness.
“Time is what we want most, but alas! We use worst.”

No room should be allowed in your life for procrastination. Then only, will it be
possible for you to get somewhere. ‘Procrastination’ as the old saying goes ‘is the
thief of life’. Therefore never put off important tasks. Neglected jobs invariably pile
up and later crush you under their weight. If you wish to bask in the sunshine of your
hours of achievements, get down to the job with full enthusiasm. Take the first step
and plunge yourself into your work. Remember, even the longest journeys have to
begin with one step.
Do you know that we actually have only 12 years, out of an average life- span of 70,
for effective work? Of the rest, 25 years go in sleep, 8 years in study and education, 6
years in rest and illness, 7 years in holidays and recreation, 5 in commuting, 4 years in
eating and 3 in transition or getting ready to do all the above activities!
“Lost yesterday, somewhere between sunrise and sunset, two golden hours, each set
with sixty diamond minutes. No reward is offered, for they are gone forever.”
Proverbs

Time cures all things.

Time is money.
Gain time, gain life.
Patience, time and money accommodate all things.
Time undermines us.
Time is the father of truth.
Time flees away without delay.
For the busy man time passes quickly.
Time and tide wait for no man.
Importance Of Planningxx 4
Time lost cannot be recalled.
Everything is good in its season.
It is too late to call back yesterday.
History repeats itself.

Upbringing

The future of every individual is closely related to the impressions and influences
experienced during childhood and youth. If children and young people are brought up
in a climate where their enthusiasm is stimulated with higher feelings, they will be
vigorous in mind and display good morals and virtue.
Little attention and importance is given to the teaching of cultural values, although it
is most necessary to education. If one day we are able to ensure that it is given
importance, then we shall have reached a major objective.
Improvement of a community is possible by elevating the coming generations to the
rank of humanity, not by obliterating the bad ones. Unless the seeds of religion,
traditions and historical consciousness germinate throughout the country in the place
of every bad element that has been eradicated, new bad elements will inevitably grow
up.
Books to be read by children, no matter whether they are in prose or verse, must give
resolution to the spirit, soundness in the mind, and strength to hopes, so that we may
raise generations with strong wills and sound ideas.
Such educators as have not been apprenticed to a master and have not received an
education from a sound source are like blind persons trying to light the way of others
with lanterns. Mischief and impudence observed in a child are due to the atmosphere
in which he or she has been brought up. The discord is family life increasingly reflects
upon the spirit of the child, and therefore upon the society.
In schools, at least as much stress must be laid on good manners as upon other
subjects of children are to grow up with sound characters. Education is different from
teaching; most human beings can be teachers, but the number of educators is severely
limited.
Good manners are a virtue and greatly appreciated in whomever they are found. The
one with good manners is liked, even though he or she may be uneducated.
Communities devoid of culture and education are like rude individuals, in whom it is
not possible to find either loyalty in friendship or consistency in enmity. Those who
put their trust in such people are always disappointed and those who depend upon
them are sooner or later left without support.
Although it is fundamental that girls should be brought up to be delicate like flowers
and mild and affectionate educators of their children, due attention must also be given
to making them inflexible as defenders of truth.
Importance Of Planningxx 5
Otherwise, we shall have transformed them into poor, impotent beings for the sake of
delicacy and mildness. We must never forget that a female lion should nevertheless
keep the attributes of a lion.
The humanity of a human being is directly proportional to the purity of his or her
emotions. Although those who are full of bad feelings and whose souls are influenced
by egoism look like human beings, whether they really are human is doubtful.
Almost everyone can be successful in physical training, but there are few who are able
to educate their minds and feelings.
The former training is the means of producing men of muscle, while the latter
produces men of spirituality.
The first school for children, whose souls are as bright as mirrors and as quick to
record as cameras, are their homes.
Their first educators are their mothers, thus it is fundamental for the existence and
stability of a nation that mothers should be brought up as good educators.

Part 1: Children

The child has the same meaning for the continuation of the human race as the seed of
a tree has for the continued growth and multiplication of that tree. Any people who
neglect their children are subject to decay, and those abandon them to bad cultural risk
losing their identity.
Children form the most active and productive part of a community after every thirty to
forty years. Those who have little children and pay no attention to them should
consider how important an element of a people's life they are disregarding and
shudder.
The reasons for the vices observed in today's generations and the incompetence of
some administrations and other nation-wide troubles, lie in the conditions prevailing,
and the ruling elite, of thirty years ago. Likewise, those who are charged with the
education of today's young generations will be responsible for both the vices and
virtues that will be apparent thirty years from now.
Any people who would like to secure their future, should apply as much energy to the
upbringing of children as they devote to other problems. The energy devoted to many
other things may go in vain, but whatever is spent for the upbringing of young
generations to elevate them to the rank of humanity will be like an inexhaustible
source of income.
Miserable, evil, ones in a community- the anarchists, the drug or wine addicts, and the
dissolute, etc- were once children whom we neglected to educate properly. I do not
now whether we are giving enough consideration to what kind of people will be
walking about in our streets tomorrow.
The peoples who attach due importance to the institution of the family and the
education of their young generations- not those who are more advanced in sciences
and technology than others- will get the upper hand in the world of the future. The
peoples who neglect the institution of the family and the education of their young
generations, are destined to be crushed by pitiless wheels of time.

Part 2: The Rights of Children

Importance Of Planningxx 6

Man was created with his mate and hardly lived at all without a mate. That he and his
mate were created together at the very beginning of human existence indicates that
marriage is natural. Reproduction is the most important purpose of this natural state.
A marriage made for reasons other than bringing up children is no more than an
entertainment. The offspring who come into the world through a marriage dedicated a
pleasure are the unfortunate product of a transient emotion.
The permanence of a nation depends upon the education of its people, upon their lives
being guided to spiritual perfection. If nations have not been able to bring up perfect
generations to whom they can entrust their future, then their future will be dark. There
is no doubt that the duty of bringing up children properly devolves upon mothers and
fathers.
Human generations go from age to age, and human beings worthy of the name are
those who have risen to high levels of spiritual attainment. Those who do not develop
their spiritual faculties because they have been ill-educated scarcely merit being called
human. They are nothing more than strange creatures, even though they too are
descended from Adam, and those who are burdened with being their parents are
unfortunate to have nurtured them.
When trees are correctly pruned, they give fruit and their growth improves, otherwise
they shrivel and become stunted. If this is true, should not a human being with so
many talents and abilities be given at least as much care as a tree?
O man, it is you who bring the child forth into the world, so it is your responsibility to
raise that child to the realms beyond the heavens. Just as you take care of its bodily
health, so too you must take care of its spiritual life. For God’s sake, have pity and
save the helpless innocent- do not let its life go to waste.
If parents encourage their children to develop their abilities and be useful both to
themselves and the community, then they have given the nation a strong new pillar. If,
on the contrary, they neglect to cultivate human feelings in their children, they will
have released scorpions into the community.
Parents have the right to claim parentage of their children as long as they educate and
equip them with virtues. They cannot make such a claim if they neglect them. And,
what shall we call the parents who show their children the ways to wickedness and
indecency, and cause them to break with humanity?

Part 3: Youth

Those who wish to predict a nation’s future can be sure of getting it right if they take
full account of the education and upbringing given to the young of that nation.
When desires are presented as sweet foods and virtues as salty and bitter ones, which
are the young likely to prefer? Yet it remains an obligation upon us to bring them up
to be friends of virtue and enemies of indecency and immorality.
Until we help them through education, the young are captives of their environment.
They wander aimlessly, intensely moved by their passions, but far from knowledge
and reason.
Importance Of Planningxx 7
They will become truly valiant young representatives of the national thought and
feeling provided their education integrates them with their past, and prepares them
intelligently for the future.
Think of a society as like a glass vessel, and of youth as the liquid poured into it,
which takes its shapes and color from the vessel.
The evil-minded champions of regimentation invite the young to obedience to
themselves rather than to the truth.
Do such people never question themselves? And should they not also be obedient to
the truth?
The progress or decline of nation depends on the spirit and consciousness, the
upbringing and education, given to its young.
So, while nations that have brought their young up well are always ready for
progress, it is impossible for those who have neglected their young to take even a
single forward step.
A young man is like a young tree in power and strength.
He has the potential to be a Heracritus, overcoming obstacles with a mind keen to
enlighten the souls of others.
He carries to the world the promise of harmonious order, provided that he is himself
properly trained and educated.
Story 1
The Selfless Thief

Once upon a time there lived a poor man in town. He was very wise and learned.
People respected him very much. But unluckily he was given to the bad habit of
thieving. Though he fully realized that it was a very bad habit, yet he was not able to
get rid of it. Seeing something precious with anybody, he could not help stealing it,
though otherwise he was a man of very high ideals.
Once four traders came to the poorman’s town. They stayed in a public inn at night.
Next day they went to the market and each of them bought a precious jewels for
himself.
At about sunset they returned to the inn to pass another night there. They had made up
their minds to leave for their town early next morning.
As for the poorman, he somehow came to know of the jewels bought by the traders.
So, he reached the inn in the evening and became busy serving the traders. He
arranged for their food and beds and thus pleased them. In fact, he wanted to steal
their jewels when they had fallen asleep.
As for the traders, they sent the poorman away on some pretext. Then closing the door
of their room, each of them swallowed his jewel. They were sure that the jewels will
come out with the stools after a day or two. This was, they thought, safest way to carry
the jewels home.
But the poorman was more than a match for them. He had seen them swallowing their
jewels through a hole in the wall of the room. So, he decided to accompany them on
their return-journey home. He was sure that on the way he would find a chance to kill
them all and get their jewels.
Next morning, the traders got ready to leave the inn and set out for their home-town.
The poorman folded his hands and said, “I am a poor poorman.
Importance Of Planningxx 8
Take me too with you. I shall serve you on the way. You may pay me whatever you
like. The traders had already been pleased with him, so they agreed to comply with his
request.”
The poorman was very happy indeed. He was sure that he would be successful in his
plan and get the jewels for himself.
Now, the way leading to the trader town lay through a dense forest. This forest had
settlements of jungle tribes at every step. The jungle men often robbed the travelers
passing through their settlements in broad daylight even.
It was high noon and the traders, along with the poorman, were passing by a
settlement.
Suddenly three crows hovered over their heads and shouted, “Master! Master!! They
have jewels with them- They have jewels with them. The crows were pets of the
village chief. He fed them daily and they helped him this way in return.
The head of the settlement heard the noise and came out of his hut. Hearing what the
crows were saying, he asked his men to catch all the five travelers.
The order of the village chief was obeyed and before long, the traders, along with the
poorman, were brought before him. He ordered his men to search all of them from
head to foot and rob the jewels. But nothing was found with them.
The chief of the village was very amazed indeed. He knew that his crows never told
lies. But where could the jewels go then? He began to think hard. At last he hit upon
the idea that the jewels must be inside the bodies of the travelers.
The chief said to his men, “You know that my crows never tell a lie. So, the jewels are
certainly with them. If they have not been found during the search, they must be inside
their bodies. So, kill them one by one and get all the jewels.” Hearing the words of the
village-chief the traders got frightened. But the poorman thief who was otherwise a
noble man, thought, “If any of them is killed, a jewel will certainly be found inside his
body.
Then all of us will be killed. Though I have no jewel in my body, but the chief would
not spare me at all. So, my death is certain whatever I may do. Why shouldn’t I then
try to save them? That way I shall repay their salt that I have eaten.”
So, before the traders could say anything, he came forward and requested the chief,
“Sir, they are all my younger brothers. I can’t see them dying before my eyes.
So, please order your men to kill me first of all. The chief thought, “I am to kill all of
them. What difference does it make if I kill him first?”
So, he ordered his men to kill the poorman first of all. They obeyed and killed him.
But they could not find any jewel inside his body. The village chief repented of what
he had done.
The poorman’s murder completely changed the chief of the jungle men. He felt highly
ashamed of what he had done. His conscience was scolding him again and again. He
had taken the life of a man for nothing.
The chief at once set the four traders free. They resumed their journey to their home-
town. Reaching their safe and sound, they thanked their God. But they could never
forget the sacrifice of the selfless poorman who had laid down his life to save theirs.
Friends! This story has a lesson for you. Whatever impressions a child imbibes in
childhood grow up with him/her. That is why it has been said-
“the child is father of the man”.

Proverbs

An ill life, an ill end.

He that mischief hatches, mischief catches.
A bad penny always turns up.
Good fame is better than a good face.
Manners make man.
Nurture is above nature.
Dogs bark as they are bred.
The more noble, the more humble.
Virtue is the only true nobility.
There is nothing lost by civility.
The best smell is bread, the best savour salt, the best love that of children.
A good deed is never lost.
Rule youth well, and age will rule itself.
He gets a double victory, who conquers himself.
Never too late to learn.
He that sows virtue, reaps fame.
No pleasure without pain.
Love conquers all.
Parents are patterns.
He that burns most, shines most.

Morals
&
Good Habits
Morals are a set of noble principles governing human conduct, and originate in high
spirituality. For this reason, people who neglect spirituality are therefore lacking in
spiritual values cannot sustain conduct in accordance with these principles.
Preferring the interests for others over one’s own is high spirituality and liberality.
Those who always do good without expecting any return will one day bow before God
in wonder and admiration when, unexpectedly, they meet the accumulated results of
their considerations and all the good they have done.
The learned man is freed from carrying the burden of superfluous information, and
attains greatness, to the extent that he puts himself in the service of humanity and sets
a good example to others through his high morals and virtues. Otherwise, he is no
more than an individual in the public eye who has wasted his life. A man with high
morals and virtues, even if he lacks learning and is thereby hard as iron is, may
sometimes prove to be as useful and valuable, as good, as gold.
Never deceive anyone even if they deceive you. Fidelity and uprightness are two of
the highest virtues. Even if it usually brings you loss, always be faithful and upright.
Importance Of Planningxx 10
Morals were once thought of as virtues. Today, morals as regarded as a collection of
rules of social behavior. I wish people behaved in accordance with those rules, even
though they are not virtuous.
In the past, they would say, “The principles of good conduct are no longer practiced;
we only see them written down in books. Today, we say, “The principles of good
manners are out of date; what ever remains of them is written in old books.” Whatever
they say, those principles are worth sacrificing many new things for. Even though
people try to present them as outdated.
Story 1

Good Habits

It is very important to have good habits. A habit is a way of behaving that has become
fixed through repetition. If we do anything again and again, we get used to it and it
becomes a habit. Habits can be good or bad. It is a good habit to keep ourselves and
our things neat and clean. Brushing our teeth, washing our face and combing our hair
everyday are good habits. It is also a good habit to eat, sleep, work and play at regular
and proper times.

It is important that we do not develop bad habits like biting out nails or opening our
mouth while chewing our food. Other bad habits are spitting around and while
yawning not closing our mouth with our hands etc. We must check ourselves when we
realise that we are doing such things.
We can form a habit in nearly any activity, eating, drinking, working, or playing. In
everything we do again and again, we must take care to do it in the right and proper
way.
When Taher was a small boy, his mother always made him brush his teeth regularly.
When he was a little older, he started doing things himself.
One morning, Taher woke up late. He did not have time to brush his teeth or have a
bath. He dressed in a hurry and left for school. When he returned home, he looked at
his teeth in the mirror. They did not look dirty. They seemed to be as good as before.
From that day, Taher became careless. He would go to bed without brushing his teeth.
Sometimes, he even went to school without brushing his teeth.
One day, a few months later, Taher woke up with a toothache. His mother took him to
the dentist. The dentist shook his head and said, “Your teeth are in a bad state. I will
have to pull one tooth out.” Taher asked, “Will it hurt?” The dentist said, “Well, you
have to be brave. It will hurt a bit.” How sorry Taher was that he had not bothered to
follow the good habit of brushing his teeth regularly! We must remember that it is
easy to learn bad habits but bad habits can do a lot of harm. Hence, we should always
aim at developing good habits.
Story 2

Good Behavior

We must learn to behave well at all times. We must do things in the correct and proper
way.
Importance Of Planningxx 11
When we go to a party, we should dress neatly, talk politely and behave properly. A
well-behaved person will come on time and never forget to thank the host and hostess
before leaving.
It is bad manners to snatch things from the table or push and shout while the
refreshments are being served. Well-behaved children never try to grab the food
served on the table. They do not push others to get what they want or try to snatch
other people’s presents. They do not tease younger children and make them cry. They
never waste food.
Ramsey was a fifteen-year-old boy. He was in class 7. He was older than the boys of
his class. The boys were afraid of him because he was unkind and a big bully.
Whenever he went to the playground, the other boys would move away. If he wanted
the swing, he would push the boy who was already on it and sit on the swing himself.
Nobody liked Ramsey because of his bad behavior.
One day, another boy came to the class. His name was Saleh. Saleh and Ramsey were
the same age. Saleh was even bigger than Ramsey.
At first, the other children stayed away from Saleh because he had made friends with
Ramsey, but Saleh was a good boy. He was well-behaved, kind and friendly. The
teachers liked him. He was kind and gentle to the younger children. Soon all the
children began to like him. They were not afraid of him. They always gathered around
him.
Ramsey saw how everyone was fond of Saleh. He, also, wanted to have friends. “He
started behaving like Saleh. He stopped pushing the smaller children and teasing the
girls.
He started greeting the teachers and stopped misbehaving. A big change came over
him. He was no longer the old Ramsey.
Soon Ramsey also became a popular boy. His classmates grew fond of him and began
to like him.
Indeed, Class 7 became the happiest and the best class of the school.
We must always behave well whether we are at party, in the classroom, on the
playground or at home. If we do so, everyone will like us.

Story 3
Helping Each Other

Have you ever thought how we can be helpful? We can help in many ways- at home,
at school and when we go out to the market.
How can you help in the house? Do you have to cook, wash the clothes or sweep the
floors? Of course at your age everybody can do these things. You can help your
parents at home in many small ways too. Let us see what kind of help you can give
them.
You should wake up in the morning without a fuss; get dressed and pack your bag for
school quickly and quietly. Eat your meals without complaining, or making a noise.
Go to school with smile.
By doing these things you would make your parents happy.
At home, you should remain quiet when guests visit your parents. Let your parents
talk to them.
Importance Of Planningxx 12
Do your homework without your parents telling you to do so. Keep your things and
yourself neat and tidy.
Do not waste any food. Your mother will tell you other ways in which you can help at
home. You can help by obeying her and doing what she says.
In school, you can help your teachers by listening carefully to what they teach.
Do your classwork and homework properly. Do not fight with others or make a noise
in the class.
Help to keep your school clean by using the waste-paper baskets.
When you go out with your parents, friends or relatives, remember to be polite and
well-behaved. Listen carefully to what your parents tell you and always try to do what
they say.
One day, the teacher asked Mahmud in school, “Mahmud, why are you looking so sad
today?” Mahmud said, “My mother is ill. I want to help her to get well.”
His teacher patted him and said, “Do not worry, Mahmud. Your mother will get well
soon. Take care of your sister, do your homework and be careful not to make a noise.”
Mahmud brought his little sister, Salma, home after school.
Salma left her bag on the chair and took off her shoes and socks in the drawing room.
Mahmud picked up her bag and her shoes and socks and put them away in their proper
places.
After lunch, Mahmud tiptoed into his mother’s room. She was asleep.
He left the room, shutting the door quietly behind him. He told Salma a story and
made her lie down and rest. Mahmud did not go out to play with his friends. He sat
down to do his homework.
In the evening, Mahmud’s mother called out to him. She said, “When did you come
home?” A long time ago Mother,” Mahmud said and asked her, “how are you feeling
now?” “I am feeling better, son,” said she. “You and Salma were so quiet all the time.
I have been able to sleep well. Thank you for being so good.”
Mahmud felt very happy. He was sure that his mother would get well soon.
He kept helping out in the way his teacher had advised him and soon, his mother did
get well.

Story 4
The Story of Abdullah

In Kashmir there lived a boy called Abdullah. He had lost his parents, so he lived
alone. He had a small hut and a few sheep. Abdullah earned a little money by selling
the wool from his sheep.
Near Abdullah’s house lived poor old woman. Her name was Aunty Salma. She loved
Abdullah like her own son, Abdullah loved her too.
At the back to Abdullah’s hut there was a cherry tree. Every summer the tree bore lots
of cherries. Abdullah picked the ripest cherries to eat. But he did not throw away
stones. He washed and cleaned them. He dried them in the sun.
Then he carved each stone so that it looked like a flower. It was not an easy thing to
do. Abdullah had to work with a sharp knife. Sometimes he cut his hand. Sometimes
he broke the stones. But Abdullah did not stop working.
At least he had a hundred carved cherry stones. He made a small hole in each. Then he
took some thread. Soon he had a necklace of cherry stones.

Abdullah took the necklace to Aunty Salma. “This is a present for you,” he said.
Aunty Salma looked at the necklace. “This is a beautiful necklace,” she said. “If you
sell it, you will get good money for it. Why you gave it to me?”
“I want you to have something pretty,” said Abdullah. “Please keep it.”
Aunty Salma smiled at Abdullah and thanked him. But she did not sleep at all that
night. She was thinking, “How can I help Abdullah?”
Next day Aunty Salma went to the nearest town. In the town lived a goldsmith. Aunty
Salma showed him the necklace. The goldsmith was very happy to see it. “What, a
necklace of cherry stones? It’s beautiful! Somebody must have worked very hard to
make it. Who is it?”
“A young boy,” said Aunty Salma.
“Bring him to me, please,” said the goldsmith.
Aunty Salma took Abdullah to the goldsmith. “Son,” said the goldsmith, “you are
clever with your hands. Would you like to live with me and learn my trade?”

Beauty opens locked doors.
Goodness is better than beauty.
Beauty draws more than oxen.
Beauty fades like a flower.

Keeping

Your Temper

Story 1
Cheerfulness
Importance Of Planningxx 14
We all understand the meaning of “getting angry”. Hot-tempered people get angry
when they cannot have their way. They are selfish and have no consideration for
others.
A hot-tempered child gets so angry that he or she shouts, screams, bites and throws
things about. This is a very bad habit.
People who do not control their temper usually regret what they have said or done in a
fit of temper. Many friendships break because hurtful things are said in a fit of temper.
We must control our temper at all times.
A person who does not lose his temper easily is always respected and admired.
Peter was a very active boy. He took part in all school and class activities. He liked
being the leader. One day, the teacher announced that Rahmi would be the captain of
the cricket team. Peter did not like this at all. As always, he wanted to be the captain.
He was so annoyed at not being made the captain that he threw the bat and walked
away.
The teacher called Peter after the match was over. Peter was still sulking. He would
not apologise for his bad behaviour. The teacher said, “Peter, it is not good to be hot-
tempered. Next time if you show your temper, I will punish you.”
After a few days, it so happened that Peter had just finished playing a game and was
thirsty. He went to drink water. Another boy was already drinking water. Peter pushed
him aside and snatched the glass from him. When the boy protested, Peter got angry
and kicked him. The poor boy slipped and hurt himself. When the teacher came to
know of this, he punished Peter.
One day, Peter had to go to a friend’s house. They had decided to go to see a match
together. As Peter mounted his bicycle, the chain came off. Peter gets so angry with
the bicycle that he kicked it hard. The spokes in the back wheel got bent and the wheel
would not turn. He threw the bicycle down in anger. When his fit of temper had
passed, he got the cycle repaired at a shop. When he reached his friend’s house, he
found a lock on the door. Peter then hastened towards the playground, but the match
was already over.
Peter felt very sad that he had missed the match. He sulked all the way home. He was
in a bad mood. He threw his bicycle in front of his house.

Peter’s mother was watching him from the window of the house. “Why were you
angry with your bicycle?” she asked. “It would have taken you only a minute to put
the chain off. By losing your temper you spoilt your bicycle and missed the match.
What a silly thing you did!” exclaimed his mother. “Learn to be calm. Calmness is the
source of greatest power. It is the sure indication of a strong, well trained and
disciplined mind. If you are calm, you will never be taken by surprise; you will never
be in a hurry and all your labours will be successful,” the mother continued.
Peter thought over what his mother had said. “She is right,” he said to himself. “If I
had controlled my anger, I would not have spoilt my bicycle and I would have been
able to see the match.”
Peter went to his mother and said, “Mother I’m sorry, I behaved so badly. I realize
that losing my temper did not solve any problem.”
His mother put her hand on his shoulder and said, “You cannot undo what has been
done, but try to be patient and calm in the future.”
Importance Of Planningxx 15
It does not help us to raise our voice, throw our books about and lose our temper. We
cannot always have our way.
It is a great quality to be calm and patient all the time. We will find that we can
achieve more when our temper is under control than when we are angry.
Story 2

Do You Often Lose Your Temper?

Hadji and Vali were going to see an exhibition together. They arranged to meet at the
main gate of the exhibition grounds at 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Hadji reached in
time, but Vali came late by half an hour.
Hadji felt very annoyed. He wanted to say something nasty to Vali but managed to
control himself.
Vali explained why he was late. “My aunt came just as I was setting out and mother
sent me off to buy something for tea. Sorry to keep you waiting!”
Hadji smiled and gripped his friend’s hand. They bought their tickets, went in and had
a wonderful time at the exhibition.
Hadji kept thinking, “Good thing I didn’t get angry or we’d never have enjoyed
ourselves.”
Anger is one of man’s worst failings. It does a lot of harm. Here are some awful truths
about anger:

When you are angry you cannot think clearly so you are unfair to other people.
Sometimes you accuse them of doing things they haven’t done at all. Thus anger
makes us unjust.
Anger often leads us to say too much. An angry man forgets himself and says harsh
things which cannot be taken back.

Anger hurts other people and makes them angry too. It breaks up family ties and is the
end of friendship.
Anger wastes a lot of time and energy. You keep boiling inside and it is a long time
before you can settle down to your normal routine. A fit of anger often leaves us tired
because it uses up so much energy.

Story 3

The Painting

Gulshan had a big sister, Shakila. They went to the same school. Gulshan was in class
VII, Shakila in class X.
Shakila was very good at painting. Once their Principal told them, “There will be a
painting competition at school. The best painting will get a prize.”
Shakila was very happy. Shakila said, “I’ll do my best to win that prize.”
Gulshan was happy too. She said, “Oh, I hope my sister wins that prize.”
Importance Of Planningxx 16
Shakila painted a picture. It was the picture of a tree. The tree was full of bright
yellow flowers. At the back was a clear blue sky. One black bird flew in the sky. Oh,
it was beautiful! Mother, Father, Gulshan, all liked it very much.
Shakila took ten days to paint the picture. When it was ready, she put it on her table to
dry. She told everyone, “Please don’t touch my painting. Be careful.” Then she went
opt to play.
Gulshan was at home. She was eating bread and butter. She also wanted to go and
play. But she thought, “I’ll look at the painting just once before I go out.”
She went to Shakila’s room. The sun was shining through the window. The sunlight
fell on the painting. The yellow flowers looked like gold. Gulshan was so happy she
forgot what Shakila had said. She put out one finger and touched the flowers. And, oh
horrors! There was a little butter on the flowers.Gulshan saw what she had done. She
was frightened. She hid under the table and began to cry.
A little later Shakila came she ran straight to her painting. When she saw the butter
she was very angry. “Who has spoilt my painting?” she cried. “I worked so hard to
make it. Who has spoilt it?”
Gulshan came out from under the table. She was still crying. “I did it,” she said. “Oh
Darling, I’m very sorry. Please forgive me.”
Shakila had been very angry. But when Gulshan said sorry, Shakila was not angry any
more. She only said, “Don’t do it again.”
Then she sat down at the table. She took out some cloth an her colors and made the
picture all right again. She got the prize after all.
Story 4

Read this message from The Mother for the children of today. Ponder over it and
discuss it in your class.
“Children of goodwill, you should learn to control yourselves, and if tough bridle is
needed to control your nature, so not complain.
A spirited young horse which will gradually become well-behaved is of much more
value than a placid wooden horse which will always remain placid whatever you may
do and on which you put a bridle only for the fun of it!”
“Once Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), flew into a rage while
he was having his dinner. The cause of this outburst was a slave who accidentally
spilled a little boiling water on him. To save his skin, the slave in control of himself,
fell to his knees and patiently and calmly recited from the Holy Koran. The verses
meant that the man who controls his anger, forgives and is merciful, is loved by Allah.
Hussain’s anger disappeared like magic and he freed the slave. The salve scored rather
well because he was self-disciplined.”
“One may gain political and social independence, but if he is a slave to his passions
and desires, he cannot feel the pure joy of freedom.”
“The man that has practiced control over himself, cannot be acted upon by anything
outside; there is no more slavery for him. His mind has become free; such a man
alone is fit to live well in the world.”
Proverbs

He that is angry is seldom at ease.

An angry man never wants woe.
Importance Of Planningxx 17
Anger makes a rich man hated, and a poor man scorned.
Anger and haste hinder good counsel.
Anger punishes itself.
Anger ends in cruelty.
Anger has no eyes.
When a man grows angry, his reason rides out.
When wrath speaks, wisdom veils her face.
Anger begins with folly, and ends with repentance.
When a man is angry, he cannot be in the right.
Anger dies quickly with a good man.
Anger is a short madness.
He who slowly gets angry keeps his anger longer.
When angry, count a hundred.
Delay is the antidote of anger.
If you be angry, you may turn the buckle of your belt behind you.
Anger restrained is wisdom gained.
When you enter a house, leave the anger ever at the door.
He that is angry without a cause, shall be pleased without amends.

Sharing

In the days of the steam engine, the engine drivers had no option but to stand at close
quarters to a blazing fire. It was all part of being an engine driver and without that no
train could have run. Much the same thing happens to the individuals who make
things so in civic life. They are confronted by the blazing fire of their own anger at
other members of the society.
They rage at wrongdoers, cheats and shirkers, both real and imagined. But just as the
engine driver controls both the fire which drives the engine and his own desire to
escape from it, so must be the individual in society tame both his own fury and a
desire simply to run away from adverse situations. If a society is to hold together and
function in harmony, individuals must learn to bear with those who oppose and hurt
them. There is no group of people in which differences of opinion do not arise; no
group in which there are never feelings of grievance and resentment. It would, indeed,
be unrealistic to expect that everything should be plain sailing.
How then can people live and work together? How, with seemingly irreconcilable
differences between individuals, can society be welded into a cohesive whole? There
is only one way: people must bury their differences and agree to disagree. But this can
happen only if people react cooly and rationally in difficult situations where relations
are strained and there seems no way out of the dilemma. It can happen only if people
are fully aware of their responsibilities towards others, as individuals, and towards
their community as a whole.
This may seem to be asking the impossible but this is not so. Every individual does
these things in the most natural way within his own domestic circle in quite normal
families, differences of opinion occur almost every day, but the bonds of love and
kindship prevail and grieviences are all finally buried.
Importance Of Planningxx 18
It is a matter of instinct in a family, is something which can emerge in a community
only through conscious effort on the part of its members. While it is an emotional
bond that keeps families from disintegrating, it is a rational effort which cements
society, constraining its members to hold together and sharing everything despite all
differences.

Story 1

The Happiest Day

It was the morning of Eid. Arif had bought lots of crackers and fireworks. His father
had brought him a toy plane. His mother had made sweets. Oh, it was a happy Eid for
Arifr.
Just before lunch, Ahmad went to market to buy some candles. In front of the shop
Arif saw a boy. He looked thin. His clothes were too small for him. The boy asked the
shopkeeper, “What can I buy for ten paise?”
“Nothing,” said the shopkeeper rudely. He had no time for poor people. The boy
turned away. Arif felt very sad to see him go. He went after the boy.
At the end of the road was an old building. On it, was written ‘ Orphanage’. The boy
went into the orphanage and Arif came back. He was thinking. He knew who lived at
the orphanage. It was boys who had lost their parents and did not have a home. There
wasn’t much money at the orphanage. So there wasn’t much food and no toys at all.
Back home, Arif put all his crackers and fireworks on a table. He took half of them
and put them into his school bag. Then he went into the kitchen. He said, “Mother,
there are many boys living at the orphanage. Let’s share Eid with them.”
“Sure, son, “ said his mother. “What a lovely idea!” She put a lot of sweets into the
school bag. Arif took the bag to the house of his friend Ahmad.
“Ahmad,” said Arif, “there are many boys living at the orphanage. Let’s have happy
Eid with them.”
“What a bright idea!” said Ahmad. I’ll give some of my crackers and the red candles I
brought yesterday.” Ahmad’s mother gave a box of sweets and three shirts that were
too small for Ahmad.
“Let’s go to Pasha’s house,” said Ahmad. So they went to Pasha’s house. From there
to Ramsey’s. By the time they reached Ramsey’s house, they had two bags full of
things. Ramsey’s mother gave them a big basket with more clothes and sweets. She
also sent Ramsey’s elder brother Mahmud to carry the basket.
They took everything to the orphanage. The boys at the orphanage saw them and came
running. Oh, the joy on their faces! How they laughed when the crackers went
‘BOOM’! It made Arif and his friends happy just to look at them.
They came back in the evening. “Ready for your Eid, Ansar?” asked his mother.
“I’ve had my Eid, Mother,” said Arif, with a smile.
“The happiest I ever had!"

Fun Shared is More Fun

School was closed for a week. Samed and Hasan were very busy.
With the help of Ramsey and Jahed, two boys who lived further down the road, they
were making a tree house in a plum tree in Hasan’s garden.
Hasan’s father had given then a couple of stout packing cases.
He had also given them a saw, hammer, some nails and a bit of advice. “A nail must
go straight,” he told them.
You see, he did carpentry for a hobby and liked boys to do the same. Samed was the
biggest. He cut the wood to shape.
Ramsey and Hasan hammered the nails in. Jahed was small, so all he could do was run
back to the house every now and then and get them water to drink.
The tree house was soon made. It was just big enough for two if they squeezed in.
John climbed in first, with Samed.
Ramsey and Hasan sat on the branches below. They all laughed and sang and ate
biscuits and peanuts out of a paper bag.
Just then Hasan’s father came to see the tree house.
“Great!” he said, laughing up at them. “Tell me when you have holidays again.
We’ll make bows and arrows and start our Archers’ Club.” The boys let out a whoop
of joy.
Doing things together was such FUN! Yes, most group activities are fun.

Story 3

The Farmer

There was a farmer. He lived in a hut and worked hard in his fields. He raised good
crops. But he was all alone. He had no children. His wife had died long ago.
Many years went by. Once the farmer fell ill. He was ill for a long time.
He could not work in the fields. The crops were spoilt. “If only I had someone to help
me,” thought the poor farmer. But there was no one to help him.

Some more time went by. One evening the farmer sat in his hut. He was very sad. He
had only a little food left.
And there was no money at all. “I wish I had someone to help me,” thought the poor
farmer again. But there was no one to help him.
Suddenly there was a knock at the door. The farmer opened the door.
A man stood outside. He was young. But he looked very tired. His clothes were all
dusty. “I’m very hungry,” he said. “will you please give me something to eat?”
“Yes,” said the farmer. He gave the man water to drink and shared his bread with him.
They ate and went to sleep.
Next morning the farmer woke up. the young man was already up. He looked fresh.
He said, “You have been very kind to me. You shared your food with me. Let us now
share the work.” He took the oxen and ploughed the farmer’s fields. He sowed the
seeds.
When it was done, he said to the farmer, “I live in the next village. When your crop is
ripe I’ll come again. I’ll help you cut it.”
Importance Of Planningxx 20
The farmer was very happy. Whenever the young man came to help him, they shared
the food and the work.

Story 4

Sharing Things

Once a poor labourer came to work in a rich man’s house. A few days later he said in
wonder, “Everyone here gets his fill of rice to eat!”
Someone asked him, “Didn’t you eat your fill at home? How did you manage?”
The labourer smiled. “Oh, we managed all right. Whatever food there was, we shared
among ourselves.”
We can all learn from that poor man not to be selfish but to share. It is a beautiful
thing to share. It shows that we love the people around us, because without love there
can be no sharing.

Story 5

Kindness

Being kind means to be gentle, friendly, helpful and loving towards other people.
Kind people always think of the happiness of others.
We should be kind not only to our family and friends, but also to old people, little
children, the poor, and the sick.
We should be kind to animals and all living things. Remember, “Kindness is the
language which the dumb can speak and the deaf can hear.
A kind person enjoys sharing his or her things with others. “If we are kind and
generous, we will make everybody happy.
One day, Adnan was given some money. He ran to a nearby shop. “Should I buy a bar
of chocolate or some sweets?” he asked himself. He decided to buy some sweets and
to keep rest of the money to buy ice cream.
While he was eating one of the sweets, he saw a boy looking at him. Adnan asked the
boy, “Do you like sweets?” the boy nodded his head.
“Then why don’t you buy some for yourself?” Adnan asked the boy. The boy did not
reply and looked down at the ground.
Adnan was surprised. He asked, “Don’t you have any money?” The boy shook his
head and started moving away.
Adnan thought, “I have got the money which I kept for an ice cream. I will buy him
some sweets with that.”
Adnan went back to the shop and bought some more sweets. He called back the boy
and gave him the sweets.
The boy smiled at Adnan and said, “Thank you.” He was very happy. He ran to his
little sister who was sitting in the park. He shared the sweets with her.
They were happy. The boy and the girl smiled at Adnan. Adnan was happy that he
had made two children happy sharing the sweets with them.
When you are kind, you make others happy and you also feel good.

The Ant and the Dove

An ant went to the bank of a river to quench its thirst, and being carried away by the
rush of the stream, was on the point of drowning. A dove sitting on a tree
overhanging the water plucked a leaf and let it fall into the stream close to her.
The ant climbed onto it and floated in safety to the bank. Shortly afterwards a
birdcatcher came and stood under the tree, and laid his lime-twigs for the dove, which
sat in the branches.
The ant, perceiving his design, stung him in the foot. In pain the birdcatcher threw
down the twigs, and the noise made the dove take wing.
“One good turn deserves another.”

Story 7

Learning from Life

Hamed sat alone during the school break. He looked out of the window of his first
floor class-room.
He could hear the din made by his class-mates, and could smell the aroma of food
from their tiffin-boxes. His mouth watered. ‘I wish someone would offer me a bite,’
he thought grumpily, ‘Everyone’s busy with their friends. Nobody even cares that I
exist.’
Just then Numan, a loud-mouthed and boisterous boy, came in and placed his tiffin-
box on his desk. The bully he usually was, he turned to Hamed, said, why are you not
outside the class-room playing? Have you eaten already?
You haven’t brought those tasty, yummy food today, have you?” Hamed did not
answer at first but when Numan asked him again, Hamed replied that he had not
brought his tiffin-box at all.
What was the use of telling this boy who always picked up other’s tiffin-boxes on the
sly between classes?
Numan was not going to offer him anything. But, to his amazement, in his rowdy
manner, Numan jumped over bags and desks and shouted out to his friends from the
window, “Hamed has not brought his lunch-box!”

Proverbs

Mind other men, but most yourself.

We are not born for ourselves.
Every man for himself, and God for us all.

Content is happiness.
Importance Of Planningxx 22
Punctuality

Would you appreciate a person who is always late? Unpunctuality shows lack of
respect and consideration for others, irresponsibility and a lack of commitment. It
shows sloppiness, laziness and indiscipline. Keeping small commitments and
promises is vital to building trust. For instance, if you tell your friend you will be at
her house at four o’clock, you will win her appreciation and trust if you are there on
time. Imagine a doctor or a lawyer not keeping an appointment! Schedules will go
haywire and patients or clients will lose faith in them. Punctuality is about planning
your day and managing your time systematically.
It is important to be always on time. Being on time is also called being punctual. It is a
good habit. We can always depend upon punctual people.
We must make sure that we are on time for our meals, our school, our bus or for any
activity for which a time has been fixed. Even going to bed on time is important.
Time is a precious gift. We must use it with care. Money once lost may be recovered
but lost time is gone forever. Success in life depends upon the right use of time. We
should never allow any moment to go waste.

Story 1

Being Punctual

Once upon a time, there were three friends, Fateh, Taher, and Noah. They did
everything together. They went to school together, they came back together, they did
their homework together and they went out to play together. One day, Fateh woke up
late because he had gone to bed late. Taher and Noah waited for him at the park gate
where the three friends always met. At last, Fateh came running. He told them that he
woke up late. The boys had to reach school before the bell rang.
The next morning Fateh was late again. The three boys ran to school. As they came
near the school, they heard the bell ringing. They were late for school.
The boys knew that their teacher did not like children to be late. She gave each of
them a black mark. Taher and Noah felt upset and angry. If Fateh had been punctual,
they would not have got a black mark.
A few days later, Fateh was late again. This time his friends did not wait for him.
They reached school on time but Fateh was late. He got another black mark.
Fateh did not speak to Taher and Noah. He felt hurt because they had not waited for
him. Was it for him to feel hurt?

One day, the three boys were invited to a birthday party. They were to go to the party
together. Once again, Fateh was late in dressing up. When the three friends arrived at
the party, the birthday cake had already been cut. The other children had started
eating. Taher and Noah felt ashamed at being late. Since that day, Taher and Noah
stopped waiting for Fateh. Do you blame them? From then onwards, Fateh had to go
to school alone. He had lost his friends because he was never punctual.
Story 2

There is a Time for Everything

Importance Of Planningxx 23

Nurhan was a girl of thirteen. She was good at studies but she often came late to
school. Her teachers told her again and again that she must be punctual. Sometimes
she was punished too. But she never learnt.
Once Nurhan was to sit for a big exam. The top ten students who passed the exam
were to be given a scholarship of two hundred Taka per month.
Nurhan was very keen to win a scholarship. But she reached twenty minutes late on
the very first day of the exam. She could not complete her paper and all her hopes
were dashed.
Don’t let this kind of thing happen to you. There is a time for everything- waking up,
going to bed, playing, taking your meals, going to school and getting through
homework.
If you do things on time you will save a lot of time. You will become smart and alert
too.

Make a TIME KEEPER for your room.

You will need some stiff paper, string, glue and color pencils.
From the paper cut a circle about 1 foot in diameter. Divide the circle into six sections
Write the following, one in each section, in the same order:
Time to get up
Time for school
Time for homework
Time to play
Spare time
Time for bed

Passion
&
Ambition
(Greed)

Ambition means to desire something too much and to be concerned about it. It also
contains demand for the world. In fact people are getting old but ambition towards
two things money and property are becoming young again. Actually it is very
important how to use ambition in the right path or wrong path. That’s why we mustn’t
be jealous of the other’s property may be we can want to have the same. Longing for
something is not bad. It shows to want to have it. But jealousy is not to want the others
to have something or to want the others to lose it. For that reason jealousy and longing
for are different. We never long for laziness, theft, rebelliousness and gangsterism, but
we can long for success, science and lawful properties.
Two types of people are good examples in the world. The first one is rich but they
spend their money for the good of people like building schools, hospitals, donation to
the poor, etc. the second one is learned people who are teaching good things, giving
Importance Of Planningxx 24
education for the good of people and who are good examples in their lives to the
others.

Story 1
Greedy Wolf

Covet all lose all, this is the same for animals and people. Greedy can’t reach their aim
only those who are patient reach their aim.
One day a hunter has set off hunting, he has walked about in the forest all day till
evening, in the end he has hunted a gazelle in the forest. While he is coming back he
has been singing a song at the same time he has been thinking about a roasted gazelle
on the table children and wife around it. Suddenly he has seen a strong pig standing in
front of him.
He has finished his singing, he also couldn’t think about children and wife, he has
been petrified with horror. He has also forgotten his children’s good words like “great
father, good father, wonderful father”.
He was looking at the pig, pig also was looking at him because pig has wanted to take
the gazelle from him and swooped on the man.
The man also has attacked the pig. Two of them were good hunters. The two hunters
struggled on the ground. Two of them were bleeding on the ground.
The man hadn’t found time to shoot arrows. The man was seriously wounded and
after a short time he died. The pig was also wounded. Before long the pig also died.
Moreover a wolf was trying to hunt around there. When he saw a dead man, gazelle
and pig, he was very pleased, he had thought that he would have eaten these three
during the year.
Because he was greedy that’s why he wanted to eat hunter’s bow too. He started
gnow the edge of the bow.
When he felt flavor of meat in it his mouth had watered by the way he had been
thinking the other meat he continued to eat the bow with a strong desire.
Suddenly the other edge of the bow snapped and lodged in his heart. “What did I do?”
he said to himself but it was all over now.
Because greed had brought trouble on him and he had paid for it.
While he was pleased with those three preys now he was far away from them. Above
all he had lost his life because of passion.
Actually the end of greedy is the same not different. As in example, the greedy mouth
of covetousness is not filled except by the earth of the grave. But you, “Don’t be
passionate and greedy, be satisfied.”
For that reason ants are under our feet but satisfied bees are flying over our heads.

Story 2
The Boy and the Filberts

A boy put his hand into a pitcher full of filberts. He grasped as many as he could
possibly hold, but when he tried to pull out his hand, he was prevented from doing so
by the neck of the pitcher. Unwilling to lose his filberts, and yet unable to withdraw
his hand, he burst into tears and bitterly lamented his disappointment. A bystander

said to him, “ Be satisfied with half the quantity, and you will readily draw out your

“Do not attempt too much at once.”

Story 3

The Dog and the Shadow

It happened that a dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth
to eat it in peace.
Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook.
As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water
beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of , he made up his mind to
have that also.
So he made snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of
meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
Beware lest you loose the substance by gasping at the shadow.

Story 4

The Land Lord

Some of my friends came up. “We are building a new building for poor students,”
they said. Take the lead for us and let’s find donation.
I accepted their demand and the next day I phoned a man whose nickname was Lan
Lord. In fact he was well-known too.
When he understood that I wanted donation “I will do what you need, come tomorrow
let’s speak about it,” he said.
Next day I went to his office with desire and happily to get donation and got
permission from his secretary then entered his office.
After listening to me about some information of building, he took out an old banknote
from his pocket then said:
“Take this, may it be my contribution.”
I had been surprised. All the same I brazened it out.
“Isn’t it too little for donation?” I said, I was expecting 100 times more than it. He
paid no attention to this.
“That’s enough for now,” he said, I need too much money for a group of collective
house dwellings that’s why I can’t waste money, by the way I need building plot.”
“How much do you need?” I asked.
“I need a measure of land about 1/2 acre” he said. If I manage as I planned, I will give
donation for your hostel and also I want you to give my name to that hostel so I will
give more money later.”
After saying many thanks to him, we shook hands and I left. Before long we started
the instruction of the hostel.
By the way we had financial straits, for that reason we remembered Land Lord many
times and we heard about him how he had had a measure of land about ¾ acre.
After three months when we phoned his assistant:
Importance Of Planningxx 26
“The land of Agha was about to come near the lake,” he said. The land became 120
acres and now he wants more than this, so we are planning to reach near the forest.
After finishing the instruction roughly I phoned his assistant again:
“The land Lord has already reached the forest, it is among the trees and approximately
150 acres. We are planning to finish it in a month.
After one month I phoned our Land Lord to get donation for our construction
hopefully. His assistant said:
“The land Lord’s place became 2 meters. Unfortunately he passed away, didn’t you
hear?”
Story 5
The Donkey’s Shadow
Once a young man had to go from one city to another. Between the two cities lay a
desert. There were no trains or cars going that way. So the young man hired a donkey
and a driver to take him.
They set out in the morning. The young man sat on the donkey. The driver walked
behind, carrying a stick in one hand. From time to time the driver tapped the donkey
with the stick. “Faster, faster,” he said. But the donkey walked very slowly. The day
was hot and the load on its back was heavy. So how could the poor animal walk fast?
By noon the desert became very hot indeed. There was not a tree or bush anywhere.
The two men could see only sand and stones, without any shade at all. The young man
took out his handkerchief. He wiped his face and said, “I can’t go on in this heat. Let
us stop for some time.” He got off the donkey and sat down in its shadow.

But the driver did not like this. “Stop!” he cried. “That’s my place. I’m going to sit
there, not you.”

“Never!” said the young man. “I hired this donkey for the whole journey, didn’t I?”
“You hired the donkey, to be sure,” agreed the driver. “But you didn’t hire its shadow.
That belongs to me. Now get up!” and he tried to push the young man away.
The two men went on quarreling over the donkey’s shadow. For some time the
donkey stood there, watching them. But soon it got tired of standing still. Suddenly it
took to its heels and ran away. The young man and the driver were left in the middle
of the desert. They had no choice but to walk the rest of the way.
Story 6
Happiness

One day an emperor in his morning walking he had met a beggar by chance.
“What you wish I will do,” he says.
The beggar laughs at emperor and “As if you will do what I want,” he answers.
The emperor takes offence then they stand to have a friendly chat together.
“Off course I can do what you want, come on tell what you want.” The emperor says.
“Before you promise, think about it twice my lord,’ beggar says. This beggar is not an
ordinary beggar. He had become teacher of the king and he had promised that word.
“One day in your life I’ll see you and I will warn you.”Actually the emperor had
forgotten this case. It is not easy to remember anything in our past life. For that reason
emperor insists on it.
“I can give you what you want, because I am a powerful king” emperor says.
Importance Of Planningxx 27
After that beggar opens his pot and asks “Can you fill in the pot with something?” and
bursts out laughing and before long emperor calls his vizir(prime minister) and
commands to fill in the beggar’s pot.
They fill in the pot but it hurts emperor’s pride before long everybody is aware of this
news, they bring different kinds of diamonds, brilliants, and rubies to fill in the pot
unfortunately they cannot fill in it so the emperor fails and entreats beggar
“Okey, you won. I could not manage what you wanted but tell me what your pot was
made of, please explain to it.”
Beggar’s answer “It is so easy.”
It had been made of human’s mind. Namely from human’s desires and demands. They
are not full of anything by birth.
If you comprehend this reality your life will change more what is desire? Desire is a
sense which gives excitement for a certain time until it is reached, for instance you
want a car, a yacht, a house, etc. When you have them, they lose their importance
why? Because your brain externalizes them car is in the garage and it doesn’t arouse
desire.
Excitement finishes after getting it. If money is in the pocket, your endurance for
strong desire finishes.
This time you feel obliged to create a new desire and you follow your desire after
getting one desire, you follow another. After reaching your aim you take out a new
desire again. If you understand this side of desire you can change your life.
It doesn’t bring you happiness, come back, turn back to your house, try to find things
which make you happy, not out, within you.

Proverbs

Desire has no rest.

High places have their precipices.
He who opens his heart to ambition closes it to repose.
Seek that which may be found.
Hasty climbers have sudden falls.
Hot love is soon cold.
Zeal without knowledge is a runaway horse.
A man is a lion in his own cause.
Need makes greed.
The greedy mouth of covetousness is not filled, except by the earth of the grave.
Kill not the goose that lays the eggs.
Covetousness brings nothing home.

Politeness

Politeness means talking and behaving in a gentle way. Polite people are kind to
others and do not use rude words. They always remember to say ‘please’, ‘thank you’,
‘sorry’, ‘excuse me’ and ‘I beg your pardon’.
Importance Of Planningxx 28
We should use these words as often as required. These words are the keys which can
open the doors of people’s hearts.
Polite persons always use the word ‘please’ when asking for something. They will
say “Please give me a glass of water,” or “Please shut the door.”
We must say ‘thank you’ whenever someone has done something for us or has given
us something. Similarly, we should say ‘sorry’ when we have made a mistake.
If we are asked to do something and we cannot do it, we should say, “I am sorry.”
If we have done something which has hurt another person, we must say, Please excuse
me.”
If we have not heard or understood what has been said and want it to be repeated, we
should say, “I beg your pardon.”
We should always be polite. We should show kindness towards all.
Polite people are welcome everywhere. Nobody likes a rude person.
Another way of being polite is is to talk with respect to our elders. We should talk to
them softly and gently.
It is polite to greet people when we meet them. We should say ‘good morning’ to our
friends and elders. We should wish ‘good night’ to our parents before going to bed.
If we are polite to each other, we would all be happy. If we are polite, everybody
would like being with us.
A true person always keeps himself away from unseen dirts.
Namely he keeps clean his body, garments and neighborhood, never tells lie, never
slanders, never gossips about his friends and neighbors, never feels jealous to other
people, and also tries to be honest, must know how to be kind to all people, and how
to smile everybody because smiling is a kind of charity.
In short, kindness is a key which can open the doors of people’s heart.

The Ass in the Lion’s Skin

An ass once found a lion’s skin which the hunters had left out in he sun to dry. He put
it on and went towards his native village.
All fled as his approach, both men and animals, and he was a proud ass that day.
In his delight he lifted up his voice and brayed, but then everyone knew him, and his
owner came up and gave him a sound cudgelling for the fright he had caused.
And shortly afterwards a fox came up to him and said “Ah, I knew you by your
voice.”
“Fine clothes may disguise, but silly words will disclose a fool.”
Story 2
Are You a Polite Person?

One day Fatih went to see his friend Ali. Seated in the verandah in front of the house
was Ali’s grandfather. Fatih said, “I want to talk to Ali.” The old gentleman cupped a
hand behind one ear as if to say he had not heard. Fatih said again louder than before,
“I want to talk to Ali.”
Importance Of Planningxx 29
The hand did not move from behind the ear. Suddenly Fatih realized what he was
doing. “Good evening, Uncle,” he said politely. “May I see Ali, please?” The old
gentleman smiled broadly. “Go right in, my boy,” he said. “Go right in.”
Story 3
Kindness Works Like Magic

Once there lived a rich old lady. She had a lot of things- a big house, a garden and
many cars- but she did not have a friend. That was because she did not like people and
would not have anything to do with them. Her own family had stopped meeting her,
for this very reason.
But once there was an accident on the road, right in front of this lady’s house. A bus
full of school children crashed into a truck. Many of the children were badly hurt and
bleeding. In all her lonely, selfish years the lady had not seen such a pitiful sight. Her
heart went out to the children. She threw open the doors of her house and took them
all in. A doctor was called because the nearest hospital was too far away. The lady’s
cooks were set to work making food for the children.
In time the children recovered and were sent home. But the lady did not forget what
she had seen. A few weeks later she gifted her house to the people of the town, to be
made into a hospital. She herself worked night and day to help the sick and wounded
who came there. She lived until seventy five and her last days were filled with the
deep satisfaction that comes from being kind to others. “Why was I so selfish earlier?”
she used to say.
Kindness works like magic. If you are kind to others, you get a lovely warm feeling,
deep down within yourself. Everyone should be treated with kindness, young and old,
rich and poor, man, woman and child.
Kindness can be shown in many different ways. Most often it can be shown by
helping people in distress. Can you think of a few more?
Story 4
The Value of Politeness

The story goes that once two close friends went riding in a forest. After riding all day
they lost their way. Hungry and almost dying of thirst, they came to a large rock. On
one side of the rock they saw a hole, from which trickled a few drops of water.
“A spring!” cried the first friend and hammered at the hole with a stone in order to
force out more water. Nothing happened.
The second friend went down on his knees and spread out his hands towards the rock.
It is said that so much water gushed out of the hole, both friends were able to quench
their thirst completely.

Good Morning Uncle

Fatema lived in Asia. She lived with her father and mother. Their house was on a hill.
There were many trees nearby. Lots of monkeys lived in the trees.
At nine o’clock every morning, Fatema went to school. On the way she passed by the
house of Mr. Mehmet. He was an old gentleman. He and Fatema’s father were friends.
Fatema knew Mr. Mehmet. Sometimes she saw him standing at his gate. But she did
not wish him.
Importance Of Planningxx 30
It wasn’t polite and Fatema knew it. But she did not care.
One day Fatema was going to school. She saw Mr. Mehmet at his gate. “I’ll look the
other way,” thought Fatema. “He’ll think I did not see him.”
But Fatema could not look the other way. On the road were many monkeys. They
were big and fat and had red faces. They were fighting and making a lot of noise.
Fatema was so afraid that she could not go on. She stopped and began to cry.
Mr. Mehmet saw her. He opened his gate and came out. He looked at Fatema and
smiled. “Don’t be afraid,” he said “Come with me.”
Mr. Mehmet walked with Fatema. They walked close to the hill. Soon the monkeys
were left far behind. Fatema was safe.
Fatema looked up at Mr. Mehmet . She said, “Thank you, Uncle. Thank you very
much!”
From that day Fatema began to wish Mr. Mehmet . When she saw him at the gate she
smiled and said, “Good morning, Uncle.”
And Mr. replied, “Good morning, my child, good morning.”

Grandma at Prayer

It was Saturday. Ramsey came home from school. He was very happy. He had won a
prize.
Ramsey rang the bell. The maid opened the door. “Grandma!” said Ramsey, as loud as
he could. “Good news! I’ve won a prize!”
But there was no reply. The maid said, “Grandma is saying her prayers. Some people
came this morning.
Grandma had to look after them. She could not say her prayers in the morning. That’s
why she’s saying them now.”
Ramsey went to the prayer room. He looked in at the door. Yes, his grandmother was
saying her prayers. Her head was bowed.
Her hands were folded. Her eyes were closed. “I wish I could tell her,” thought
Ramsey. “But how can I talk to her now? She is saying her prayers.”
The maid asked, “Will you eat something?”
“No,” said Ramsey. He sat down with a book. He tried to read. But he did not feel like
it. Every two minutes he jumped up.
He went on tip-toe to the prayer room, to see if Grandma had got up.
A little later Ramsey could not even sit. He stood at the door of the prayer room.
He looked at Grandma and he looked at the clock, again and again. At last Grandma
got up. “Oh Grandma!” cried Ramsey. “I’ve won a prize!”
Grandma hugged him, “I heard you, son,” she said. “Well done! I’m very happy. But
I’m even more happy you have been a good boy. You did not disturb me at my
prayers.”

Help

One Another

According to all religions Allah gave our all needs and made some people rich some
people poor. We see this fact in our society nowadays. In the history of people there
were poor, rich and week. In fact, it makes either contradiction and harmony. This
contradiction and difference in the nature are forming source of action. We say that
this is life. For that reason people need each other. A rich person cannot say that he
doesn’t need poor people, because he gets wealth from the power of poor people. If
somebody works in your work means that you need someone else’s power, money,
opinion etc.
In short they need each other. This fact brings to light that people need each other and
must help each other reciprocally.
Help one another is the natural result of living together in society. It is impossible
either to live together or not to feel need

Helping Others

Many of us are kind, thoughtful and helpful only towards those people whom we
know. But this is not right. We should be kind and helpful to all.
Importance Of Planningxx 32
Ahmed was the only son of his parents. His father had died when he was a little boy.
His mother brought him up with great difficulty. She worked day in and day out,
cleaning people’s dishes and washing clothes. It was a hard life for her, but she
wanted to educate her son. She wanted Ahmed to get a good job when he grew up.
When Ahmed grew up, he got a job in an office. He earned a good salary. Now his
mother did not need to work for money. Saturdays and Sundays were the nicest days
for them. On Saturdays, his mother cooked a special lunch and Sundays, Ahmed
cooked for his mother.
One Saturdays, Ahmed saw as crowd on the road as he cycled home from work.
Ahmed saw someone lying on the ground. He did not stop to see who it was or
whether he could help. He was only thinking of his mother and the lunch she must be
cooking.
When Ahmed Reached home he found that his mother was not there. He was worried.
He thought, “whether could she have gone? She always waits for me”
Ahmed was thanked the stranger for all he had done for his mother. He never forgot
his kindness. From that day onwards, Ahmed did all he could to help others. He now
realised that the purpose of life is to be selflessly useful to society and to be kind and
helpful to all beings.

Hard Work is The Best Way

A military general, the head of his country’s army, was inspecting one of the army
camps one day.
He came to spot where six solders were struggling to lift a heavy iron beam. A captain
was standing by and supervising them. T General heard him shouting at the soldiers
and commanding them to hurry up. He stopped his horse near the captain and asked, “
why don’t you give them hand? The beam is heavy.”
“Why Should I? Shouted the captain. “ Can’t you see I am a Captain? He I stoop to
their level?”
“I see”, said the General calmly. “I’m sorry. I did not know that you have such a high
rank.”
He got off the horse and helped the soldiers to lift the beam. Then he turned to the
Captain and said, “ Captain, next time you have a such a job and enough men, send for
me.
I am a head of a the army.” He quickly swung himself onto the saddle and rode away,
giving the captain no chance to apologise!
Work, whether physical or mental, has a dignity of its own.
Without the labour of farmers, we would not have food; without the labour of the
people who toils endlessly breaking up stones and tarring them, we would not have
roars; without the labour of factory workers we would not have the clothes or any
luxurious that we take for granted.
Importance Of Planningxx 33

Prudence
Prudence is an important virtue to exercise in any venture or project; it can
prevent the remorse and regret that follow from loss or failure. So many who have
initiated projects, have either been deeply regretful or blamed their fate, just because
they failed to address their situation with the proper prudence and competence. Such
people are doubly in error - first, for inadequate deliberation and then for criticizing
fate.
However great the goal aimed at in a project, taking the proper precautions required to
attain that goal is also important. Therefore, if a person does not prepare the affair
according to its importance, carefully weighing advantages and drawbacks, he is
either not serious about the venture or simply foolish. The efforts of such fools can
often be more harmful than their inaction.
Prudence and safety measures are important resources if one is to attain one's expected
goal. It is a most grave error to be careless and negligent of those points which will
eventually be the occasion of failure or accusation.
The intelligent person is one who has considered beforehand all the possible
drawbacks and problems and provided solutions for them or dealt with them
appropriately in anticipation.
As one of our traditional sayings express it: 'It is better to catch a burglar before he
breaks into your home.
One must handle every duty with proper planning in advance and safety measures.
Also, one must be careful of the steps which do not result in any material or
intellectual benefits, nor bring any increase in value.
Every project undertaken without precautions is triviality and nonsense, a sign of half-
wittedness and childishness in the person preoccupied with it.
A person demonstrates his virtue and worth through successes achieved after facing
very tough trials and awkward circumstances. The success of a service under adverse
conditions depends primarily on a strict plan and actions in obedience to that plan.
Accordingly, a person's worth and virtue are proportional to his successes and his
successes are proportional to the prudence of the decisions he took before he set out
on the venture.
To carry out one's duties in an orderly, consistent way depends on both the initial
measures and plans and on one's ability not to be deviated or disrupted by what rivals
may do - which again demands forethought and prudence.
So many of those who had set out with great noise and fuss, were caught and delayed
by rivals or enemies before reaching the second step, surrounded by the evils and
vexations they had been warned of but did not prepare for adequately. If only that
were the only ill consequence! Consider the effect on the masses who followed the
affair - the loss of hope, the paralysis and apathy generated by failure.
To be prudent does not mean to be fearful and withdraw. Nor does action without
proper measures and plans have anything to do with being courageous and bold.
Being excessively cautious may indeed cause some damage but of a sort that can be
recovered from. By contrast, the indiscreet and heedless actions of those who think
imprudence is heroism are very risky and dangerous.
Importance Of Planningxx 34
Prudence requires taking into consideration (and seeking to mitigate) the jealousy,
rancor and hostility of all those who may be incited against the project. This appears
to lack vigor and militancy.
However, its very lack of aggressivity means it will not provoke such an effort to
prevent the project, it is therefore less risky and less likely to bring about failure and
disappointment.
By contrast, every bold, aggressive action necessarily provokes and inflames hostility
and, therefore, there is bound to be much anxiety about its consequences.
The stature of a person before the Creator is measured by his energy and the greatness
of his aims. The clearest sign of the greatness of his aims and the efforts exerted
therefor, is that he sacrifices his own comfort and desires for the prosperity of others.
I do not know if you can imagine any greater sacrifice than to step on one's own
dignity for the sake of social well-being; to hold one's temper even on an occasion
when one would shout; to limit one's own desires at a time of personal prosperity.
It is foolishness to consider only the daring of victorious armies and disregard the
importance of military plans as reasons for their success.
Similarly, it is a kind of stupidity to attribute successes in general to heedless daring
and not give due weight to the importance of prudent planning and forethought.
Efforts to secure a goal, as well as the precautions taken for it, are invitations for the
help of the Almighty.
These are two parts of the same reality. A faulty step in either the preparation or the
enactment may cause the cessation of that help and then success will not be achieved.
Safe, steady progress on the journey is possible for those who are discerning and
vigilant continually - and fortunate are they who realize that it is so.

Story 1

The cranes and The cobra

Once upon a time, there lived a number of cranes in an old banyan tree. Near the roots
of that very tree there lived a black cobra in a hole.
He was very cruel. Whenever any mother-crane laid eggs in her nest, the cobra would
go there stealthily and eat up the eggs. The cranes could not do anything but bewail
for some days and be silent. They felt just helpless indeed.
But one of the cranes, when he lost the eggs laid by her companion, could not
tolerate it.
He made up his mind to do something to get rid of the cruel cobra. He flew to a
nearby pool and sat weeping there over the loss of the eggs.
Suddenly a crab came swimming near the bank. He saw the weeping crane and
asked him, “What is the matter, Mr. Crane? Why are you weeping like that?” A ruel
cobra is the cause of my weeping. We are just helpless before him.
Whenever any of us lays eggs, he swallows them in our absence. We can not but
weep. “This time he has eaten up the eggs that my wife laid only the day before,”
replied the crane.
The crab heard the crane’s sad story and said to himself. “These cranes are
always cruel to us-crabs. They eat up our young when they can. I must guide him so
Importance Of Planningxx 35
that he and his companions suffer even more. That is the best way to seek revenge
indeed.”
So, pretending to think, he so, pretending to think hard, he said, “ Mr. Crane! I
have hit upon a plan for you. If you are able to carry it out successfully, you will
certainly get rid of the cruel cobra.” “What is it? Let me know at once. I shall spare no
pains to carry it out,” replied the cruel cobra.
“Look for a hole that is the home of a mongoose. Then catch some fish and cut
them into pieces with your sharp beak.
Scatter these pieces from the mouth of the hole of the mongoose will eat the pieces of
fish and follow them till he reaches the cobra’s hole. Seeing the cobra he will kill him
and rid you of his cruelty,” replied the crab.
The crane liked the plan but he never thought over its dark side. He flew about
from place to place and at last found a hole that was the home of a mongoose. Then he
flew back and caught some fish.
Cutting them into bits, he strewed them from the hole of the mongoose to the hole of
the black cobra.
The plan worked naturally and the mongoose followed the fish-pieces to death.
Then he dragged the dead crane down to his hole and enjoyed hearty meal.
From that day on, it become a routine with the mongoose. Whenever he felt
hungry, he would wait for the nightfall.
Then about the dead of the night, he would kill a sleeping crane and drag it to his hole.
Ho enjoyed its flesh for a day or two and then made another crane his target.
By and by, all the cranes were eaten up by the mongoose. Had the first crane
weighted the pros and cons of the plan suggested by the crab.
He would not have led the mongoose to the cobra’s hole. The cobra had been satisfied
with their eggs only. But the cruel mongoose ate up the cranes even.
So, friend! Learn to weigh the good and bad points of anything that you choose
to take in your hand.

Story 2

The silly ass

Once upon a time there lived a lion in a thick forest. He was very fierce and
cruel. He had a jackal as his friends as his attendant who always followed him like a
shadow.
One day a very strange incident occurred. The lion was on his usual prowl when
he met a huge elephant. A fight between the two followed and the tusker attacked the
lion with his tusks. The lion had to run for his life as he had been very badly wounded.
Somehow he reached his den and fell down exhausted. Naturally he was not in a
position to hunt and prey. So, he had to go without food for many days.
Jackals live on the left-overs of the food eaten beasts of prey, we know. So, the
jackal too had to remain hungry along with lion. Thus both the master and the
attendant feared death by starvation.
The jackal said to the lion, “Your Majesty! I am going to die of hunger. I find
myself just unable to wait for you. So, allow me to go and look for my food.”
Importance Of Planningxx 36
“No, please; you can not leave me in this trouble. Go and persuade some animal
to come here so that I may kill him. The problem of food will be over,” replied the
lion.
The jackal set out in search of some animals. He roamed from place and at last
saw an ass grazing along the bank of a river. He approached him and said, “Hello
Uncle! Where have you been all these days? I am seeing you after a long time. You
look very weak; what is the reason?
The ass replied, “It’s my fate indeed. My master doesn’t feed me
well, though I have to work hard for him.” “But why should you
tolerate this injustice at all? Come with me and enjoy the green
grass of the frost. Within a few days, you will become hale and
hearty, “ said the jackal.
The ass replied, “We are tame animals and live in villages or
towns with our masters. To go into a forest is full of danger for us.
So, I can’t go with you, dear.”
“But where I live, there is no danger of any fierce animal. A
jenny (she-ass) is already living in my neighbourhood.
She used to be with a washer man formerly. Having been ill-treated
she ran to the forest. Now, she is quite hale and hearty. She is yearning for a mate.
Come with me and she will welcome you warmly,” said jackal in an inciting tone.
The ass was taken in by the oily words of the jackal. So, he accompanied him
and before long they were near the lion’s den.
Seeing the lion, the ass felt frightened and took to his heels. The lion tried to attack the
fleeing ass but he could not kill him. The ass escaped scot free.
The jackal rebuked the lion at his failure to kill the ass saying “Your Honour!
How will kill any other animal when you have failed to kill an ass even?”
The lion was ashamed of his failure indeed. But to cover his folly, hoe put on a
fake smile and said, “I was not fully prepared for the attack. Had I been ready, I would
have killed an elephant even.”
The lion asked the jackal to make another trial and bring the ass once again to
him. So, the jackal set out to bring the ass once again.
Reaching near the ass, the jackal said, “Why did you run away like that? The jenny
was going to embrace you out of love. After all she has been alone for a long time.
She could not control herself. It only showed how lonely and love-sick she was
feeling. But you should not have fled like a coward. She has been in tears since you
left her so abruptly. Come with me and calm her with sweet words and love.”
The silly ass said, “Oh! She was a jenny! I am sorry I was lost in thoughts of the
dangers of the forest at that time. I took her embrace as an attack of some fierce lion.
So, I took to my heels without seeing backward even once.”
The silly ass was again taken in by the sweet words of the jackal and
accompanied him to the lion’s den. As soon as he was within reach, the lion sprang at
him and killed him.
Now the jackal said to the lion, “By God’s Grace, we have got food. So, please
have a bath in the river and pray to god so that he may be kind to provide us with food
in future.”
“You are right! I must first have my bath and thank God for His gift of food,”
said the lion.
Importance Of Planningxx 37
So, leaving the jackal to stand guard for the dead ass, the lion made for the river.
The jackal, being awfully hungry, could not control himself.
So, he ate up the brain and the ears of the ass in the absence of the lion. When the lion
returned after taking his bath, he found the brain and the ears of the ass missing.
So, he flew in to rage and said, “Why did you eat the brain and the ears of the ass in
my absence?”
The jackal humbly replied, “Your highness! the ass had no brain and ears. Had
he got these two things, would he have come with me the second time to be killed by
you?”
The jackal’s reply satisfied the lion. With a smile, he satisfied his hunger leaving
the jackal’s share of flesh for him.

Story 3

The unwary camel

Once upon a time there was a lion in a thick forest. He was very handsome and
strong. The animals of the forest brought him presents of delicious foods. So, he was
very pleased as well as contented.
The lion, king of the forest as he was, wanted to have some animals as his
attendants. After thinking over the matter, he chose three close attendants for
himself-a tiger, a jackal and a crow.
The jackal was the chief advisor of the king while the tiger was his bodyguard.
As for the crow, he acted as the lion’s messenger. He was given this duty because he
could fly to any corner of the forest in no time.
Now, the three attendants had to be present at the king’s cave all the time waiting
for his orders. They had to accompany him wherever he went.
When he left his cave for a kill, they had to look for the prey. For all these services,
they were allowed to feed on the left-overs of the lion’s meal. For some time,
everything went well. But then the attendants started feeling bored. Anyhow the days
went by.
One day, the crow, while flying about, saw a camel roaming in the forest. He had got
separated from a caravan and lost his way. The crow came flying ti the lion and said,
“Your Honour! A camel is wandering in the forest. He can be your meal and so you
should kill him.”
But the lion had never seen a camel because it is not a wild animal. So, when he
saw the camel, he got frightened. He said to the crow, “I have never seen him in the
forest before. He must be somebody’s guest. Is it proper to kill a guest? Assure him of
safety and our protection. We may enquire about his visit to our kingdom.”
“So, all the three attendants of the lion went to the camel. Assuring him of the
king’s protection, they brought him to the lion’s cave. The camel saluted the lion and
told him the story of his losing the way and straying into the fprest.
The lion was moved to hear the camel’s story and assured him of safety and
royal protection. He allowed him to live in the forest as long as he liked. So, the camel
lived just near the lion’s cave and kept visiting him every now and then.
One day the lion left his cave in the evening on his usual prowl. Suddenly an
elephant came and stood in front of him.
Importance Of Planningxx 38
The huge tusker had gone berserk indeed. He cat his fiery eyes on the lion and
attacked him. A fierce fight took place.
The elephant lifted the lion on his trunk and flung him down with a thud. The lion had
to run for his life.
Though he was able to escape death, yet he had been very seriously wounded. He was
not able to move about freely even.
How could he go hunting then? As a result, he had to go without food and his
attendants too remained hungry.
Other animals of the forest had also come to know of the lion’s inability to move
about. So, they stopped sending him presents.
Compelled by hunger, the lion called his attendants and said, “ Go and urge some
animal to come here so that I may kill to provide food for us all.”
All the three attendants roamed in the forest for some time but none of them
persuade any animal to come to the lion’s cave. So, the jackal said to his companions,
“Let us ask our master to kill the camel.”
Coming to the lion, the jackal said, “Your Majesty! We have roamed every part
of the forest. No animal is ready to come here. Should we bring the camel here for you
food? The lion flew in to a rage and thundered, “You fool! Don’t you feel ashamed to
suggest so? He is under my protection.”
The jackal was cut to the quick. But cunning as he was, he at once retorted, “But
if the camel comes and offers himself to be your meal, will it be a sin to kill and eat
him?” The lion had no reply to make. Weak and awfully hungry as he was, he said,
“Do what you think proper then?”
Seeking the lion’s permission, the jackal went back. All three decided to
persuade the camel to go to the lion.
Going up to the camel, the three attendants of the lion said, ‘Mr. Camel! Our
master is wounded and weak, you know. H e is not able to kill a prey and he has no
food for the last three days. What should we do now?
The unsuspecting camel at once said, “Our master is so kind a creature. Also, he
has been very kind to us all. So, we must do our best for him.”
The cunning jackal, seeing that his plan was going to succeed, at once said, “I
think it is our duty to offer ourselves to be his meal.”
The unwary camel at once agreed to the idea. Rather he praised the jackal for his
sense of loyalty.
So, all the four of them went to the lion and sat before him. First of all the tiger
came forward and said, “My lord you are unwell and weak. Moreover, you haven’t
had any food for some days. So, I offer myself to be your food, sir. Eat me up and
appease your hunger.’
Before the lion could say anything, the jackal said, “Your Honour! Your life is
very precious indeed. A servant who doesn’t sacrifice his own life to save his master’s
life is a sinner. He deserves to be sent to hell. So, I offer myself to be your food, sir.
Eat me up and appease your hunger.
Without giving any time to the lion to speak, the crow did the same as his two
clever companions had done.
Now it was the camel’s turn. He thought, “They have done their moral duties.
The kind lion hasn’t eaten any of them. I too should offer myself to the lion.”
Importance Of Planningxx 39
So, the camel stepped forward and said, “Your Majesty! I have been living under
your protection for a long time. Now it is my duty to repay the debt of your kindness. I
can’t see you, sir, going without food like that. So, eat me up and pacify your hunger.”
Quite impatient as the lion had grown, he killed the camel and all the four
feasted on his flesh to their fill.
Friends! The gentle often fall prey to the cunning. So, keep cunning people at an
arm’s length.

Telling
A Lie
Before telling a lie, you have to think about its consequence. If you try to solve your
all problems by telling a lie, one day people will understand the reality of everything,
after that how you are going to look at people’s faces? We need friends not for one
day, we need friends for the span of our life.
In fact a lie is the gun of the weak people. If we think that we are good people,
our words will show the reality.
If we continue to tell a lie , one day we will loose our friends, because a true friend
always wants a true friend. If you want to have friends and do not loose your friends;
stop telling lies , be realistic and righteous person.
Moreover, Telling a lie looks like a rotten apple, as you know a rotten apple
gives out bad smell and this smell disturbs people.
Stop disturbing people by telling lies, if you want to live peacefully and happily. As
you understand, People drop these rotten apples to garbage and you know what will be
in the garbage.
Finally, You are important person, do not loose your value by telling a lie and
using a weak person’s gun. Be important and understand your value, you are not such
a person who is like a rotten apple, useless things will be in the garbage area, not you!
A true life will bring happiness and make you happy but do not forget it is in your
hand and also depends on you!

Story 1

The Cunning Strok

Once there was a strok who had his nest on a tall tree that stood by a vast pool of
water. He was very cunning by nature.
Importance Of Planningxx 40
The pool abounded with fish and other small water animals-frogs, crabs, tortoises etc.
so, the strok had no difficulty in getting food.
Years went by and the strok grew old as well as weak. So, it became difficult for him
to catch the fish for his food. Sometimes he had to go without even food.
The strok said to himself, “if it goes on like this, I must die of hunger some day. I have
got to find some way to get food daily.”
The strok thought hard and at last hit upon a cunning plan. He went to the pool and
stood on its bank pretending to be very sad and unhappy. He let go even those fish
which he could easily catch.
All the animals living in the tank were very amazed to see this. They were at a loss to
understand why the strok was so sad.
At last the animals decided to ask the strok what made him so unhappy. they sent a big
crab to talk to him.
The crab went up to him and said,” what is the matter, sir? Why do you look so sad?
Your tearful eyes show that you are certainly in deep sorrow.”
The strok replied,” what should I tell you? I am really in grief. I have spent most of
my life happily here getting food to my fill. but now it will not be possible.
A very sad thing is going to happen. All the animals in the pool will die and I will
starve to death.”
“What is going to happen after all? Let me know. Sir” insisted the crab.
“Yesterday I was sitting in my nest high up in the tree at noon. Two astrologers were
resting under the tree. They were saying that there would be no rains for the next
twelve years.
All the tanks and pools would go dry and the animals living in them would die. if it
happens I will not get any food and die. That is what makes me sad.” explained the
strok.
“Why should you be sad, then? You can move to another pool or river and live there
happily for ever,” argued the crab.
“To say is one thing but to do another. I have my life here. So, I have deep love for
this pool and for all its animals. I have been feeding on you all.
How can I see you all die before my own eyes? So, I have decided to fast unto death
and sacrifice my own life.
I don’t want to live to see the horrible sight of destruction,” replied the strok.
The crab was very impressed by what the strok had said. He
felt sad and went back to the animals of the pool. He broke the sad news of the
coming drought to them. it made all of them sad too.
Besides, the stroks decision to sacrifice his life made them more worried. Suddenly
one of the animals said,” it is true, brothers, that strok had been our enemy.
But now he is going to die for us only. So, we must persuade him to break his fast.
Also, we must ask him to advise us how to be safe.”

All the animals went to the strok in a body and said,” what a sad news you have
brought, sir! But you are very wise too, we know. So, advise us what should we do to
be safe from the coming disaster.”
The cunning strok replied, “I am a mere bird. I cannot do much for you. I may help
you in a small way only. There is a bigger and deeper pool at some distance from
here. It will not dry up so soon. I can take you all there one by one if you like.”
Importance Of Planningxx 41
The animals of the pools were taken in. Pleased to hear the stroks words, they agreed
to the plan. They requested the strok to carry them one by one to the new pool.
“It is not so easy a job as I am old and weak. You must not hurry at all. I will not be
able to make more than two trips a day-one in the morning and the other in the
evening.
I must take enough rest after either trip to be fresh again,” argued the wily strok.
The animals having agreed, the strok set out on his trip with a big fish in his beak.
Cunning as he was, he went to big rock. Then killing the fish, he made a meal of it.
In the afternoon he returned to the pool for his second trip. Again catching a fish, he
came to the same rock and ate it up.
As it grew dark, the strok flew to his nest and passed the night happily. Next morning,
he again set out on his first trip of the new day.
Thus, the cunning strok was free from all worry about his food now. Therefore he
looked much happier and healthier.
This went on for months together. Most of the fish had been up by the cunning strok.
One day when the strok came to the pool, a big crab approached him and requested,
“Carry me also to the other tank please,”
As for the strok, he was fed up with eating fish everyday. He wanted to change his
taste. So, he said, “Why not, Mr Crab? I am here to take you also there,”
Saying so, the strok picked up the crab in his beak and flew towards the rock. The
crab was looking about eagerly. But could not see pool anywhere.
Soon the strok began to fly down. The crab looked down and saw the big rock strewn
with a large number of bones.
So, he lost no time to follow that the cunning strok would kill him on the rock and eat
him up.
The crab thought hard and hit upon a plan to save his life. He dug his sharp pincers
into the stroks neck. He went on digging them harder and harder.
The strok tried his best to get free but all to no purpose. At last, reaching near the
ground, he fell dead. His neck got severed from his body.
The crab heaved a sigh of relief as his life has been saved. But he was so sorry for the
fish that the cunning strok had killed.
The crab dragged the cut-off head of the strok to the pool where he had been living.
His friends in the pool were amazed to see the crab back.
They Asked, “Why have you come back, brother. Where is the strok?”
“Here he is,” replied the crab showing them the cut-off head of the strok. Then he told
them all about the cheating of the cunning strok.
The animals of the pool were stunned to hear that the strok had taken them in. But
they were happy that he was no more now.

Badness Brings
Badness
As everybody knows there are badness and goodness(favour) in this world. Doing one
of them depends on us, We usually choose one of them in our daily life and it shows
our real character
What reasons affect us to choose badness or goodness?. So, we can find the realities
of our lives. Who taught us these things?. Can we change our bad habits?. Or Are we
going to do the same bad things?.
Who are the soldiers of goodness and badness? Can you give any example about all of
them? What are the differences between them? Who are teaching these things? Why
are we using all these? What are the benefits of all these?
When we search everything in the world, we will see negative and positive in
everything, like in electricity there are minus and plus. In all kind of living things
there are male and female.
Do you know why? Because it is black and white that we can understand the
difference between them. We compare everything then we understand the difference.
To sum up, choosing badness is in our hand but we have to think the result of it,
Otherwise, we will be very unhappy in our life.

Story 1

The Roaring Burrow

Once upon a time there lived a fierce lion in a frost. He was a terror to the
animals of the forest.
They feared him so much that hearing his roar, they went in to hiding. Sometimes, the
cruel lion had to go without food only because he could find no animal to prey on.
Once it so happened that the lion could find no food for three days at a stretch.
He kept roaming in search of an animal which he could hunt.
Unlucky he failed to find any such animal. So, he felt that he would die of hunger in a
day or two.
Danger sharpens the wit, they say. The ghost of death was dancing before the
lion’s eyes. So, his wit came to his rescue and he hit upon a plan.
He kept lying in his cave all the day long. Towards the evening he set out on his
usual prowl.
Suddenly he saw a burrow with a wide mouth. He thought, “Some wild animal must
be living in this burrow.
So, I should get in and sit there silently. At nightfall, the animal shall come here to
pass the night. I shall kill him and enjoy a hearty meal.”
Thinking so, the lion got into the burrow and sat there quite and motionless.
After some time , darkness began to prevail. But it was a full-moon night. So, it was
not pitch dark. In the moonlight, everything was quite visible.
In due course of time. The jackal came to his burrow. He was walking slowly
enjoying the cool light of the moon.
Suddenly, he saw some foot-marks on the ground. He watched them closely and
found that they were the foot-marks of a lion.
Importance Of Planningxx 43
The jackal became alert and his wit moved to action. He decided to follow the
foot-marks to see where they led to.
He took some time to do so but he was able to find that the foot-marks were leading
into his own burrow. He became sure that a lion had gone his burrow during day-time.
Now he was to see whether the lion was still inside the burrow or not. He
thought coolly over the matter and said to himself, ‘Should the lion come out of the
burrow, his foot-marks of leaving the burrow would be there.
So, I must look for them. I f they are there, the lion is not in my home. But if they are
not there, the lion is certainly inside.”
So, the jackal watched the foot-marks of the lion very closely. But he could not
find the return-marks of the lion’s feet.
He became sure that the lion was inside his burrow lying in wait to kill him as soon as
he went inside.
In order to make sure whether the lion was inside the burrow or not, the jackal
thought hard and hit upon a shrewd plan. He decided to ask the cave itself a very
strange question.
Going up to the mouth of the burrow, the jackal said in a loud voice, ‘Hello, Ms.
Burrow! Is it all right? Should I come in and pas the night safely inside you?
The lion was sitting inside the burrow and he was waiting impatiently for the
owner of the burrow to come in. But the jackal had proved to be more than a match
for him.
What could the burrow reply to the question put by the jackal? Do burrows ever
speak?
It was indeed a clever plan on the part of the wise jackal, The jackal again posed a
question, “Ms Burrow ! why are you silent today?
Let me know clearly whether I should come in or not. Your silence is a sign of danger,
I think. Mind you! I shall not come in till you give a green signal. You know, we
jackals are very, very alert.”
Now the lion was in a fix. He couldn’t decide what to do. So, he kept silent. But
the jackal was not to be taken in easily. He decided to address the cave with a new
trick.
The jackal said, “Ms Burrow! Your silence shows that some fierce animal is
there inside you. And you are not taking courage to speak the truth out of his fear. So,
I think I must not trouble you today. Well ! good-bye !”
The lion found the prey slipping out of his grip. So, he lost no time to answer.
Trying to change his sound, he said.
“Come on, Mr Jackal ! It is all safe here. I could not answer your question as I was
fast asleep. I have just woken up. Come in, please, without any fear or doubt.”
The jackal’s trick had worked. He had recognised that the sound coming out of
the burrow was that of a lion. So, he became sure that the lion was still inside his
burrow.
He was happy at the success of his trick and thanked his God for being safe.
Getting ready to take to heels, the jackal said. “As a lion can never eat grass.
He cannot speak as a cave too. Your Majesty ! be at ease in my home all through the
nigh. I am going to another shelter to pass the night.”
Importance Of Planningxx 44
“Good night, Your Highness ! Good Night, Roaring Burrow ! I will see you
again if God wills so.” Saying these words, the jackal ran for his life as fast as he
could.
The lion, unlucky as he was, remained hungry for the night again. But he could
not survive the hunger and breathed his last there in the burrow itself.
The animals of the forest felt relieved when the roaring burrow became a stinking
cave to show that the fierce lion had been lying dead inside it for several days.

1. The Will To Unite

2. If an engine driver is to et his locomotive in motion, he has to stand before the

fire and endure it is fierce heat.
3. This huge and complex machine, built up so many parts, will remain immobile
unless he is prepared to do so.
4. The same goes for society. It will not function unless the individuals who have to
make all its parts work are prepared to sacrifice something of their own and
ready to endure difficulties, if not actual hardship.
Importance Of Planningxx 45
5. And just as all the moving parts of a locomotive have to be kept regularly oiled,
if they are not be worn out with friction, thus bringing machinery to the
standstill, so tolerance must be feature of society, if it is to function as a
harmonious whole tolerance is the oil which will let the wheels go round. There
can be no teamwork without it.
6. When people work together in groups, it is inevitable that there should be
disagreements and those complaints should be voiced.
7. However well-intentioned the individuals concerned may be, such negative
feelings are bound to surface sooner or later.
8. How is it possible then to work together in harmony? There is only one way, and
that is to make considered decisions to remain united in the face of disagreement.
9. It is a question of individuals being conscious of the necessity for harmony, and
willing themselves to take complaints in their stride, if they are unjustified, and
to start the process of self-examination, if the grounds for complaints have any
validity in even the smallest measure.
10. This is not asking for the impossible. Who does not do exactly this in his family
life as a matter of good sense and practicality? When family members are in
close proximity, grievances do arise and tempers often flame up.
11. But family cohesion is not destroyed because of this, for blood relationships
prevent such feelings from getting out of hand. Grievances are swept away by
mutual love, and tempers are coded by words of regard and affection.
12. And so unity of the family remains intact. The home, indeed, is a microcosm of
social existence. It provides a day-to-day working model of social harmony
unflawed by grievances or disagreement.
13. The feelings of love which cement family life can be brought into being in social
life through conscious deliberations. Unity can spring from a human awakening
to its ultimate necessity.
14. Where family life is governed by the heart, social life is governed by the will.
There is nothing that can not be endured for the sake of the unity, provided there
is the will to achieve it.

15. Story 1

16. Union Is Strength

17. Once upon a time a flight of pigeons, led by their chief, left their nests in search
of food.
18. They flew and flew over a large distance but could not find anything to eat. Still
they did not lose heart. Soon they were flying over a thick forest.

19. Suddenly one of the pigeons saw rice-grains scattered beside a big banyan tree.
He called out to his companions, “Look there is a lot of food scattered near that
big tree. Let us fly down and enjoy it.”
20. A good natured crow was sitting a branch of the banyan tree. He had seen a
hunter laying a trap near the tree some time before.
Importance Of Planningxx 46
21. So, he was sitting there to warn the birds that might lured by the rice grains and
be caught in the hunter’s net. When the crow saw the pigeons landing down, he
shouted. “No, brothers! do not go near the rice grains or you will be in trouble.”
22. But the pigeons were very tired as well as hungry. They did not heed words of
crow and landed on the ground to eat scattered rice grains. So, as soon as they
were on the ground, they caught in the trap. Their leader shouted in a loud voice.
“Oh! We are all caught in a net. We did not lend eat to the crow’s warning and
so we are in danger.”
23. Hardly had chief finished his words when he saw a hefty hunter coming towards
them. He had a club in his hand looked very fearful.
24. So, the chief thought hard and hit upon a clever plan to be safe. He thought of
flying away taking the net with them.
25. So, the chief said to his companions. “We must act together and fly off carrying
the net with us. Do not lose heart. Catch a cord of the net each of you in the beak
and fly all at once before the cruel hunter comes and kills us one by one.”
26. The pigeons were wise and courageous.
27. Moreover, death was staring them in the face. So, they lost no time to act. The
hunter was almost upon when the pigeons flew off with a sudden spurt. Off went
the net into the air with the pigeons. He ran after them hoping that they would
soon fall down under the weight of the net. But when they were out of his sight,
he gave up the chase.
28. As for the pigeons, they flew over hills, fields, dales and trees to safety. Their
chief, having seen the success of the plan, said to his companions, “Look friends!
We are safe now. So, fly to the hill near the City of Temples.
29. There lives a rat near that hill. He is a very close friend of mine and he must help
us be free from the net.”
30. “Yes, yes,” replied the pigeons and they flew to the hill. Soon they reached
where the rat lived and so they landed down.
31. The noise made by the flapping of their wings frightened the rat who ran towards
the back opening of his hole to escape out.
32. But he stopped short hearing the voice of his friend suddenly. Coming out of the
hole, he found his friend and his companions caught in a net.
33. “How did it happen, my friend?” asked the rat.
34. “We were caught in the hunter’s net. So we were forced to fly off along with it to
save our lives. We have come to you for help. Nibble the cords of the net and set
us free.”
35. “No problem at all. your worry is over now.” Replied the rat and he sat abut
cutting the cords of the net where his friend, the pigeon chief, was trapped.
36. But the chief was not selfish at all. So, he said, “No, my friend; free my
companions first.”
37. The rat very pleased to see chief’s love for his companions. So, he freed all the
pigeons who thanked their stars. They expressed their thanks for the rat’s timely
help and decided to fly away.
38. The pigeons were just going to fly away when the crow, who had warned them
not to be lured by the rice grains, reached there. He was wonder struck to see the
pigeons free from the net.
Importance Of Planningxx 47
39. The crow said to himself, “We crows are very fickle minded. So, we do not trust
anybody. But this mouse and pigeon chief are true friends.
40. I must befriend them. He went up to them and said, “Friends! I am very
impressed by your true friendship. I also want to be your friend.”
41. The pigeon chief said, “Why not, Mr Crow! You are really a noble soul. You
tried to save us from the hunter’s net, but we did not heed your warning.
42. So, we were in trouble. Luckily, we were able to fly off with the net and come
here to be free.”
43. Saying so, the pigeon chief introduced the crow to the mouse and all the three
became true and trusted friends for ever.

44. Story 2

45. The Clever Hare

46. Once there lived a lion in a forest. He was very cruel and rash. He used to kill a
large number of animals everyday though he needed only one for his food. This
senseless act sent a current of terror among the animals of forest.

47. Once day held a meeting to discuss the problem. Every suggestion was thought
over coolly. At the last it was decided that one animal should go to the lion as his
food daily.
48. Next day, a body of animals went to see the lion to inform him of their decision.
Reaching the den, the leader of the animals said, “Your Majesty! We have come
with a humble request. Kindly hear us; we are your humble subjects.”
49. The lion roared aloud and said, “Say what you want.”
50. “Excuse me sir, the way you are killing us is dangerous for the us both. If this
goes on, no animal will be left in the forest soon. Whom will you hunt for food
then? Asked the lion.
51. “We suggest that your Majesty should stay at your den. We shall send one
animal daily in the morning as your food.”
52. The lion said “All right; I agree to your plan. But if you fail to sent one animal
daily, I shall be forced to go hunting again.”
53. So, one animal went to the lion’s den everyday to become his food. This went
for a long time.
54. One day, it was the turn of wise and clever hare to go to the lion. He left his
burrow at the dawn and made for the lion’s den. He was thinking hard of some
plan to do away with lion. Suddenly his eyes fell on old well by the way side.
His wit worked and at once an idea flashed across his mind to try it with care and
tact.
55. When the hare reached lion’s den. It was fairly late. So, the lion thundered, “you
little fool! Why have you come so late?”
56. The hare, according to his plan, trembled inn fear and said. ”Your Majesty! I am
not to blame at all. How could I dare to be late? I had started well in time.
Importance Of Planningxx 48
57. But on the way I was stopped by a lion who lives in an old well just by the
wayside. He wanted to eat me up. When I mentioned your name to him, he said
foul words for you.”
58. The lion was made in anger to hear of another lion and gave out a loud roar. He
said, “ Lead me to that rascal. I will see how he could dare harm my subjects and
use foul words for me.”
59. “Yes My Lord; he let me come to you after he had taken a promise from me to
return to him. I request you to go and punish him;” said the hare.
60. “Take me immediately to where that rogue lives. I shall eat you up after teaching
him a lesson,” retorted the lion.
61. So, the clever hare led the lion to the old well which he had seen by the way side
when he was coming to the lion. Reaching there, he said, “ The rogue lives there
inside that well, O Great King. I am very afraid to face to face with him.”
62. The lion rushed to the well and peeped inside it. He saw his own reflection in
the water. Mad in anger, he took his own reflection for the other lion.
63. So, he roared aloud and his roar echoed back. But the lion could not follow this
fact. He took it as the roar of the other lion.
64. The counter roar added to the lion’s anger a hundred times and he could not
control himself. Without waiting even for a second, he acted in utter haste.
65. The hare was looking at the lion shrewdly laughing in his sleeves. He had
become quite sure that his plan was going to be a grand success. He was eagerly
waiting for the lion to jump into the well.
66. Into the well jumped the furious lion roaring even more loudly. His head crashed
against the wall of the well and he fell into the water to be drowned.
67. The wise hare was beside himself in joy. He went near the well and peeped into
it. Seeing the lion dead, he became sure that the cruel beast was no more.
68. He decided to run back and tell all the animals about all that had happened. He
was sure that everybody will heave a sigh of relief to hear the news of the cruel
lion’s death.
69. So, losing no time, the hare ran as fast as his legs could carry him. The animals
of the forest had no idea of what the wise hare had achieved.
70. But when the hare disclosed to them how he had planned to kill cruel lion, their
surprise knew no bounds. They welcomed the hare as a hero indeed.
71. Extremely pleased as the animals were to know what had happened, they
admired the hare for his cleverness and held a rejoicing in his honour.
72. Also, the hare was elected to be the leader of the animals of the forest in honour
of his exploit.
73. So, Friends! mind that wisdom is far more powerful that strength. It always beats

Trust Is Golden

Story 1

With just a few hundred dollars capital, a man from Dhaka started a business. He
asked to buy seraps of clothes which he would sell from door to door. When his
business had grown somewhat, he obtained permission to sit on the pavement in front
of a shop and sell his merchandise there.
This freelance clothe-merchant built up good deal of trust with wholesaler , whom he
impressed with his honesty and fair dealing.
The wholesaler began to grant cloth on loan to the vendor, who always made an effort
to settle his debt before the appointed date.
This habit made him even more trustworthy in the eyes of the wholesaler, who
granted him more and more cloth on loan.
After just a few years the wholesaler was giving this street-vender 150,000 $ worth of
cloth on loan, as amount which he would not have given anybody else except on the
basis of a considerable cash down-pavement.
Clearly, such a large amount of cloth could not be accommodated on the street.
The cloth-vendor now required a shop he bought one, and continued to spiral, and
before long he was among the leading cloth-merchants of the old city.
It is a mistake to think of money as the greatest asset in life. The greatest asset is trust.
On the basis of trust, one can buy anything.
What one ladies in other departments, he can make up for in trust. Trust is an
invisible asset which can buy even more than money.
But the way to establish trust is not by repeating how trust worthy one is. No, it is by
acting in a trustworthy manner. The Outside world is very sever in this regard.
Unless one proves one’s trustworthiness by impeccable actions. Only if one
consistently shows oneself worthy of trust over a long period, as the cloth vendor
showed himself in his dealing with the wholesale merchant, will one be accorded trust
in this world.

Dependability

A person who does not let people down is always liked and respected. Such a person
is dependable and will be given and responsibility. He is given importance and is
appointed a leader. People like to have such a person as their friend.
Importance Of Planningxx 50
It often takes a lot of willpower, strength and courage to keep a promise. We have to
overcome many temptations. That is why a person who can be depended upon is
greatly in demand.
A football match was to be played between two schools. The boys of both the teams
had been practising for many days. Both the teams had very good players. Everyone
was wondering which team would win.
Shamsil was the centre-forward of the Hope School team. Ramsey was the centre-
forward of the New Generation School team. Both were very good players.
Three days before the match, Ramsey had to go with his parents to a wedding in a
nearby town. He did not want to go because he would miss the practice sessions, but
his parents did not want to leave him alone at home. So, Ramsey promised the captain
of his team that he would be back in time for the match. The captain knew that
Ramsey would not let his team down. So, when Ramsey went, the captain was not
worried.
Practice sessions were in full swing. Both teams wanted to win. On the morning of the
match, Shamsil sat at breakfast with his parents. He was in a hurry of finish eating.
His parents were exitedly talking about an important event which was to take place
that evening. Shamsil’s mind was so set on the football match that he did not even
hear when his father spoke to him.
“Father is speaking to you. Shamsil ,” said Mother.
“Oh! I’m sorry. I was not listening. What is it Father?” asked Shamsil politely.
“The Mayor is coming to our locality this evening. Her will make a speech after which
there will be a reception at Friend Park. You have been choosen to garland him after
his speech,” said the father with a smile. There was no answering smile on Shamsil’s
face. Instead, he looked unhappy.
“What is the matter?” asked Mother, “Don’t you think this is a great honour?”
‘Yes, Mother, it is indeed a great honour but I shall not be able to garland the Mayor,”
said Shamsil sadly. “I have to pay the football match this evening.”
“Oh, the football match at the school ! Surely, someone can substitute for you,” said
Mother.
“No Mother it can not be done. My Team and my school are depending upon me. We
have been practicing for days. What excuse can I offer to my captain? There is no
other centre-forward. There must be other boys who would be eager to garland the
Mayor,” said Shamsil .
Shamsil’s parents were disappointed, but they were happy to see that their son had a
strong sense of responsibility. What a fine, dependable boy he was !
That evening Shamsil’s parents went to Friend Park. Shamsil went to play match. The
match was very exciting. Both teams played well.
At half, the score was 2-2. Five minutes before the end of match, the Hope School
team scored one more goal. The New Generation School team tried very hard but
could not equalise the score. The hope School won.
As soon as the match was over, Shamsil went to the captain and took his permission to
leave.
He did not want to stay for prize-distribution ceremony. He was eager to reach Friend
Park to listen to the Mayor’s speech.
Shamsil rushed to the park on his bicycle. As he entered the gate of the park, he saw
the Mayor walking towards his car.
Importance Of Planningxx 51
With him were Mr. Yakup the Chief Councilor, and Shamsil’s father.
So intent was Shamsil to catch the Mayor’s eye to greet him, that he banged into a
flowerpot. He landed on the ground with a thud. The flowerpot rolled some distance
away.
The Mayor now noticed Shamsil, and turning to him asked,” My dear boy, why are
you in such a hurry?”
Shamsil’s father smiled at his son while Mr. Yakup explained everything to the
Mayor who nodded in approval.
The Mayor now went up to Shamsil and putting his hand on his shoulder asked,” Did
you win the match or lose it, Shamsil?”
Joy was written all over Shamsil’s face. “ We won, Sir,” replied Shamsil .
“Congratulations, Shamsil ! Keep up the good work. Maybe some day you’ll be in our
national football team.” Said the Mayor shaking Shamsil’s hand.
The mayor turned to his father and said , “you must be proud of your son. He was
wonderful qualities of leadership.
Such a conscientious and dependable boy will go a long way. Our country needs
youngmen like him”

Story 3

The Outspoken Princess

Once upon a time there was a powerfull king named Sultan Pasha. He had an only son
named Prince Murat Khan. The king loved his son very dearly. But as the prince grew
up to be a handsome lad, a strange thing happened.
One day the prince was lying in his chamber for his mid day nap. A cobra came from
somewhere and entered the body of the prince through his mouth. It made the prince
ill and he began to be weaker and weaker day by day.
The King sent for a number of physicians and scholars. But none could get the cobra
out of the body. Feeling quite helpless, the prince came to believe that his days were
just numbered now.
So, he said to himself, “I must die one day before long. Why should I die here before
the eyes of my parents? They may not be able to bear the shock.
So, I must leave the palace and go to a very distant place. If I die there, the news of
my death won’t reach them. Thus they will pass their life under the impression that
their son is living at least.”
So, the next day the prince left the palace at the dead of night. He went on walking for
a number of days till he reached the kingdom of another ruler.
Roaming here and there, the prince came to an old inn near another kingdom. It stood
at the edge of a forest away from any village or town.
Finding it a suitable place for himself, the prince started living there. He fed on the
roots and fruits of trees and passed his days in contentment thanking and remembering
the Almighty all the time.
Now the ruler of this kingdom was a very proud person. He had two daughters. Both
were extremely beautiful. One of them had full faith in God.
The king often asked his daughters a question- “ who gives you all the comforts and
luxuries of life?”
Importance Of Planningxx 52
One of the princesses said that their father(the King) provided them with all their
comforts and luxuries.
But the other said, “ God gives me all the comforts. They are the reward of my own
past deeds.”
The king didn’t like the reply of his second daughter. He was, in fact, very annoyed
with her.
So, one day he ordered his men to take her away and marry her off to some poor man.
He wanted to do this so that she might enjoy the reward of his ungrateful towards him.
The kingsmen chanced to bring the princess to the old inn where prince Murat Khan
was. Seeing him weak and poor, they married off the princess to him.
Now, the princess didn’t complain against this marriage. She began to look after her
husband with love and care.
Also, she prayed to God to rid her husbands of the cobra that was living in his body.
God heard her sincere prayer and saw her unshakable faith of the princess. So God
answered her prayer to reward her for her goodness.
One day, the princess saw that her husband was sleeping soundly placing her head on
the mouth of a hole near the old inn.
The cobra in him had popped her hood out of his mouth to breathefreely in the open
air. The princess stood behind a tree and began to observe the sight.
Just then another serpent came out of the whole and said to the cobra, “ You
wretched ! why are you troubling this innocent prince?” replied, “ And why are you
living on two vessels full of gold coins?”
The serpent then said, “If anybody gives this prince black mustard seeds mixed with
water to drink, you will either die or leave the prince at once.”
The cobra too could not remain silent. He said, “ If anybody pours boiling oil in your
hole, you will die at once.”
The princess, standing behind the tree, was seeing and hearing everything. She came
to know the secrets of both the reptiles. So, she decided to kill both of them.
Next day she prepared a solution of mustards seeds and water. She gave it to the
prince as a dose of medicine. As a result, the cobra inside his body left him for ever.
Soon the prince became hale and hearty.
Also she boiled some oil and poured it into the hole of the serpent.
The serpent died on the spot. So, the couple dug the hole and got the vessels full of
gold coins. Thus the couple came to have a lot of wealth also. So, they were very very
happy indeed.
Both of them now visited the father of the princess. He was very surprised to see that
daughter was quite happy. When he came to know that Murat Khan was a prince, he
was even more amazed.
He was so impressed by his daughter’s faith in God that he himself became a true
believer.
He invited the father of Murat Khan and performed their marriage ceremony wit great
pomp and show befitting a royal couple.
Next day, Murat Khan, and his wife were led in a procession to the capital of his
Father’s kingdom.
The king and the queen were very happy indeed. Rejoicings were made to celebrate
the recovery and marriage of prince in the most pompous manner.
