COMPREHENSION AND SUMMARY (25 MARKS)
1. Read the following passage carefully and then answer the questions that follow:-

Once upon a time, in Matanda village lived a very greedy man. He was as greedy as a hyena. He
liked food more than anything else. Because of this, people in the village called him Mr. Kulakula.
One day Mr. Kulakula was invited to two wedding parties. The parties were to take place on the
same day. Mr. Kulakula did not like this arrangement, he wished they were on separate days. But
since he knew there would be plenty of delicious food there, he decided to attend both parties. He
thought the best way to do this was to wake up very early, so that he could fit in the two events.

So Mr. Kulakula woke up very early on the wedding day. He got dressed as quickly as he could and
decided to go to Mr., Pesambilis’ wedding first.

Mr. Pesambilis’ house was about half an hours’ walk from his house. When he arrived there, the
women were busy preparing the food. Some were washing the meat and cutting it into pieces.
Others were peeling potatoes and washing the rice. “Oh, I am a bit early” Mr. Kulakula whispered
to himself. “I had better go to Mr. Kazi’s wedding probably, the food will be ready. “Oh, how I wish
I had a bicycle”.

Mr. Kulakula walked fast as his thin legs could carry him. It took him 45 minutes to arrive at Mr.
Kazi’s house. By this time, he was sweating all over. When he got there, he found the women
making the fire. “What lazy women! Where have they been all morning?” He whispered angrily

Mr. Kulakula did not waste time. He decided to go back to Mr. Pesambili’s place. He thought that
the food would be ready by then. “This time I think I’ll have to run. And unless I run as fast as I can,
I’ll be late”. So he started to take on his feeble heels.

He ran as fast as an Olympic athlete. It took him only 15 minutes to reach Mr. Pesambili’s house.
When he arrived there he was told that the food would be ready in half an hour’s time. “No, I
can’t wait that long I will have to run back to Mr. Kazi’s place. I am sure the food will be ready
there when I arrive” he thought. So he turned and ran back for a few minutes. His legs were too
tired to run any further. He had no choice but to walk. This time it took him one and a half hours
to reach Mr. Kazis’ house. There was no food left. People had finished eating in fact women were
washing the dishes and putting them away.
“Oh, my God!” cried Mr. Kulakula, “I am so late I had better run back to Mr. Pesambilis’ place. Oh
how I wish I had wings!” Poor Mr. Kulakula had no wings, so he had to walk he tried to walk fast
has he could, but he was very tired and hungry when he arrived at Mr. Pesambili’s, a big
disappointment was awaiting him. People had eaten all the food and the women had washed the
dishes and put them away. They were now about to leave. “poor me! If only I had gone to one
party”. But it was already too late.
