The Will To Unitexx 98

1. The Will To Unite

2. If an engine driver is to et his locomotive in motion, he has to stand before the

fire and endure it is fierce heat.
3. This huge and complex machine, built up so many parts, will remain immobile
unless he is prepared to do so.
4. The same goes for society. It will not function unless the individuals who have
to make all its parts work are prepared to sacrifice something of their own and
ready to endure difficulties, if not actual hardship.
5. And just as all the moving parts of a locomotive have to be kept regularly
oiled, if they are not be worn out with friction, thus bringing machinery to the
standstill, so tolerance must be feature of society, if it is to function as a
harmonious whole tolerance is the oil which will let the wheels go round.
There can be no teamwork without it.
6. When people work together in groups, it is inevitable that there should be
disagreements and those complaints should be voiced.
7. However well-intentioned the individuals concerned may be, such negative
feelings are bound to surface sooner or later.
8. How is it possible then to work together in harmony? There is only one way,
and that is to make considered decisions to remain united in the face of
disagreement.
9. It is a question of individuals being conscious of the necessity for harmony,
and willing themselves to take complaints in their stride, if they are unjustified,
and to start the process of self-examination, if the grounds for complaints have
any validity in even the smallest measure.
10. This is not asking for the impossible. Who does not do exactly this in his
family life as a matter of good sense and practicality? When family members
are in close proximity, grievances do arise and tempers often flame up.
11. But family cohesion is not destroyed because of this, for blood relationships
prevent such feelings from getting out of hand. Grievances are swept away by
mutual love, and tempers are coded by words of regard and affection.
12. And so unity of the family remains intact. The home, indeed, is a microcosm of
social existence. It provides a day-to-day working model of social harmony
unflawed by grievances or disagreement.
13. The feelings of love which cement family life can be brought into being in
social life through conscious deliberations. Unity can spring from a human
awakening to its ultimate necessity.
14. Where family life is governed by the heart, social life is governed by the will.
There is nothing that can not be endured for the sake of the unity, provided
there is the will to achieve it.

16. Union Is Strength

17. Once upon a time a flight of pigeons, led by their chief, left their nests in
search of food.
The Will To Unitexx 99
18. They flew and flew over a large distance but could not find anything to eat.
Still they did not lose heart. Soon they were flying over a thick forest.

19. Suddenly one of the pigeons saw rice-grains scattered beside a big banyan tree.
He called out to his companions, “Look there is a lot of food scattered near that
big tree. Let us fly down and enjoy it.”
20. A good natured crow was sitting a branch of the banyan tree. He had seen a
hunter laying a trap near the tree some time before.
21. So, he was sitting there to warn the birds that might lured by the rice grains and
be caught in the hunter’s net. When the crow saw the pigeons landing down, he
shouted. “No, brothers! do not go near the rice grains or you will be in
trouble.”
22. But the pigeons were very tired as well as hungry. They did not heed words of
crow and landed on the ground to eat scattered rice grains. So, as soon as they
were on the ground, they caught in the trap. Their leader shouted in a loud
voice. “Oh! We are all caught in a net. We did not lend eat to the crow’s
warning and so we are in danger.”
23. Hardly had chief finished his words when he saw a hefty hunter coming
towards them. He had a club in his hand looked very fearful.
24. So, the chief thought hard and hit upon a clever plan to be safe. He thought of
flying away taking the net with them.
25. So, the chief said to his companions. “We must act together and fly off
carrying the net with us. Do not lose heart. Catch a cord of the net each of you
in the beak and fly all at once before the cruel hunter comes and kills us one by
one.”
26. The pigeons were wise and courageous.
27. Moreover, death was staring them in the face. So, they lost no time to act. The
hunter was almost upon when the pigeons flew off with a sudden spurt. Off
went the net into the air with the pigeons. He ran after them hoping that they
would soon fall down under the weight of the net. But when they were out of
his sight, he gave up the chase.
28. As for the pigeons, they flew over hills, fields, dales and trees to safety. Their
chief, having seen the success of the plan, said to his companions, “Look
friends! We are safe now. So, fly to the hill near the City of Temples.
29. There lives a rat near that hill. He is a very close friend of mine and he must
help us be free from the net.”
30. “Yes, yes,” replied the pigeons and they flew to the hill. Soon they reached
where the rat lived and so they landed down.
31. The noise made by the flapping of their wings frightened the rat who ran
towards the back opening of his hole to escape out.
32. But he stopped short hearing the voice of his friend suddenly. Coming out of
the hole, he found his friend and his companions caught in a net.
33. “How did it happen, my friend?” asked the rat.
34. “We were caught in the hunter’s net. So we were forced to fly off along with it
to save our lives. We have come to you for help. Nibble the cords of the net
and set us free.”

35. “No problem at all. your worry is over now.” Replied the rat and he sat abut
cutting the cords of the net where his friend, the pigeon chief, was trapped.
36. But the chief was not selfish at all. So, he said, “No, my friend; free my
companions first.”
37. The rat very pleased to see chief’s love for his companions. So, he freed all the
pigeons who thanked their stars. They expressed their thanks for the rat’s
timely help and decided to fly away.
38. The pigeons were just going to fly away when the crow, who had warned them
not to be lured by the rice grains, reached there. He was wonder struck to see
the pigeons free from the net.
39. The crow said to himself, “We crows are very fickle minded. So, we do not
trust anybody. But this mouse and pigeon chief are true friends.
40. I must befriend them. He went up to them and said, “Friends! I am very
impressed by your true friendship. I also want to be your friend.”
41. The pigeon chief said, “Why not, Mr Crow! You are really a noble soul. You
tried to save us from the hunter’s net, but we did not heed your warning.
42. So, we were in trouble. Luckily, we were able to fly off with the net and come
here to be free.”
43. Saying so, the pigeon chief introduced the crow to the mouse and all the three
became true and trusted friends for ever.

45. The Clever Hare

46. Once there lived a lion in a forest. He was very cruel and rash. He used to kill a
large number of animals everyday though he needed only one for his food.
This senseless act sent a current of terror among the animals of forest.

47. Once day held a meeting to discuss the problem. Every suggestion was thought
over coolly. At the last it was decided that one animal should go to the lion as
his food daily.
48. Next day, a body of animals went to see the lion to inform him of their
decision. Reaching the den, the leader of the animals said, “Your Majesty! We
have come with a humble request. Kindly hear us; we are your humble
subjects.”
49. The lion roared aloud and said, “Say what you want.”
50. “Excuse me sir, the way you are killing us is dangerous for the us both. If this
goes on, no animal will be left in the forest soon. Whom will you hunt for food
then? Asked the lion.
51. “We suggest that your Majesty should stay at your den. We shall send one
animal daily in the morning as your food.”
52. The lion said “All right; I agree to your plan. But if you fail to sent one animal
daily, I shall be forced to go hunting again.”
53. So, one animal went to the lion’s den everyday to become his food. This went
for a long time.
The Will To Unitexx 101
54. One day, it was the turn of wise and clever hare to go to the lion. He left his
burrow at the dawn and made for the lion’s den. He was thinking hard of some
plan to do away with lion. Suddenly his eyes fell on old well by the way side.
His wit worked and at once an idea flashed across his mind to try it with care
and tact.
55. When the hare reached lion’s den. It was fairly late. So, the lion thundered,
“you little fool! Why have you come so late?”
56. The hare, according to his plan, trembled inn fear and said. ”Your Majesty! I
am not to blame at all. How could I dare to be late? I had started well in time.
57. But on the way I was stopped by a lion who lives in an old well just by the
wayside. He wanted to eat me up. When I mentioned your name to him, he said
foul words for you.”
58. The lion was made in anger to hear of another lion and gave out a loud roar. He
said, “ Lead me to that rascal. I will see how he could dare harm my subjects
and use foul words for me.”
59. “Yes My Lord; he let me come to you after he had taken a promise from me to
return to him. I request you to go and punish him;” said the hare.
60. “Take me immediately to where that rogue lives. I shall eat you up after
teaching him a lesson,” retorted the lion.
61. So, the clever hare led the lion to the old well which he had seen by the way
side when he was coming to the lion. Reaching there, he said, “ The rogue lives
there inside that well, O Great King. I am very afraid to face to face with him.”
62. The lion rushed to the well and peeped inside it. He saw his own reflection in
the water. Mad in anger, he took his own reflection for the other lion.
63. So, he roared aloud and his roar echoed back. But the lion could not follow this
fact. He took it as the roar of the other lion.
64. The counter roar added to the lion’s anger a hundred times and he could not
control himself. Without waiting even for a second, he acted in utter haste.
65. The hare was looking at the lion shrewdly laughing in his sleeves. He had
become quite sure that his plan was going to be a grand success. He was
eagerly waiting for the lion to jump into the well.
66. Into the well jumped the furious lion roaring even more loudly. His head
crashed against the wall of the well and he fell into the water to be drowned.
67. The wise hare was beside himself in joy. He went near the well and peeped
into it. Seeing the lion dead, he became sure that the cruel beast was no more.
68. He decided to run back and tell all the animals about all that had happened. He
was sure that everybody will heave a sigh of relief to hear the news of the cruel
lion’s death.
69. So, losing no time, the hare ran as fast as his legs could carry him. The animals
of the forest had no idea of what the wise hare had achieved.
70. But when the hare disclosed to them how he had planned to kill cruel lion, their
surprise knew no bounds. They welcomed the hare as a hero indeed.
71. Extremely pleased as the animals were to know what had happened, they
admired the hare for his cleverness and held a rejoicing in his honour.
72. Also, the hare was elected to be the leader of the animals of the forest in
honour of his exploit.

73. So, Friends! mind that wisdom is far more powerful that strength. It always
beats strength whenever there is a clash between the two.
