Assignment # 4

(Due date: 04-04-2014)

1. A rectangular reinforced concrete beam has a width of 350mm and effective depth, d, of
550mm is subjected to a factored shear force of 400 kN at a critical section near the
support. The flexural reinforcement in the tension face of the beam consists of 4nos. of
32mm diameter bars, which are continued in to the support. Adopt M25 grade concrete
with Fe 415 grade HYSD steel reinforcement. Design the shear reinforcement using mild
steel vertical stirrups to resist the shear force at the section.

2. A tapered cantilever beam of 3.0 meters span has a constant width of 250mm and tapers
from 200mm depth at the free end to 500mm at the supports. Determine the nominal
shear stress at a section 2.0 meters away from the free end. The beam has to support a
uniformly distributed load of 50 kN/m. The cover to center of the reinforcement is 50mm.

3. A cantilever beam of 250 x 350mm is provided with 2 # 22mm bars together with 2 #
18mm bars as flexural tension reinforcement at a section at which the factored shear force
is 110 kN. Two 18mm diameter bars may be curtailed and two 22mm bars continued up
to the free end. Design the shear reinforcement at the section if (a) the bars are curtailed
and (b). the bars are continued up to the free end. Assume fck = 25 N/mm2 and fy = 415
N/mm2

4. A simply supported beam 300mm wide by 550mm deep carries a uniformly distributed
load of 50 kN/m, over an effective span of 6.0 meters. The beam is reinforced with 5-18
mm diameter bars with an effective depth of 510mm, assuming that one bar can be bent
near the support. Design the suitable shear reinforcement near the support section of the
beam. Adopt M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.

5. A rectangular beam of width 350 mm and effective depth 550 mm has to carry a factored
shear force of 400 kN at the critical section near the support. The flexural reinforcement
in the tension face of the beam section consists of 5-20 mm diameter bars which are
continued in to the support. Assume M25 Grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel. Design the
shear reinforcement at the section.
6. A tapered cantilever beam of 3.5 m span has to carry a uniformly distributed load of 50
kN/m. The width of the beam section is 250 mm, while the depth tapers from 250 mm at
the free end to 500 mm at the fixed supports. Determine the nominal shear stress at a
section 2.5 m away from the free end. Cover to center of the reinforcement is 50 mm.

7. A cantilever beam of 250 × 350 mm size is provided with 2 bars of 20 mm diameter

together with 2 bars of 18 mm diameter as tension reinforcement. At a section, where the
factored shear force is 110 kN, 18 mm diameter bars are curtailed and two 20 mm bars
are continued up to the free end. Design the shear reinforcement at the section (a) if all
the bars are continued in to the support, (b) if two 18mm bars are curtailed. Assume fck =
25 N/mm2 and fy = 415 N/mm2.

8. In the above problem, how do you design the shear reinforcement at the flexural
reinforcement cut-off point in the beam.

9. In problem #3, if the bars are bent-up, design the shear reinforcement at the section.

10. A series of beams placed at 3.0 m centers are supported on masonry walls of 230mm
thick. The effective span of the beam is 6.0m. The slab thickness is 120mm and the web
width is 250mm. If the slab and beams are cast integrally. Determine the flexural
reinforcement at the mid span of the T-beam to carry an imposed load of 5.0kN/m2 of the
slab. The floor finishes may be assumed as 1.0kN/m2. Design the beam for shear and
deflection. Adopt M20 Grade concrete and Fe 415 steel.
