What learn from analyzing language and culture my favorite Television series

Brooklyn 99
The television series I have chosen to present and analyze today is non other then
Brooklyn 99. It is American police procedural comedy series that was created by the network
FOX,NBC and etc. The show is notorious for the fact that you do not have to attractive in order
to have a telecision series. I find the show to be funny humours and is family friendly unlike
other popular television series nowadays. The main character of the series is Jake Peralta police
officier in 99 division in New York cit. The show features some A list celebtires every now and
then what distingiuies this show from any other is the simple fact that it is purely comedic and
and releable with the majority of the audience.
How do characters speak? Do they have particular accents or do they speak in certain
dialects?
I think that all the characters in this television series speak in “American English” which
is similar to Oxford English but a bit different in how they spell certain words and articulate
specific words. Most importantly the language are speak professionally in their field work
especially the character Holt he is the leader. I don’t think any of the character have a particular
accent if so it would be southern American accent. But is it is unlikey due to the fact that the
show is not based in the south of America.
What do they say?
The main character of this series is always finding himself in unique far fetched situations
but a little bit relatable with us the views. I think that is is important to note that the main
charater of this show is a caucassian male who is fairly young. And his catch phrase when he is
in a difficult situation is “Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, cool, No doubt, no doubt, no doubt”. After
hours of watching this series I have realized that this is a reference
How do they construct their identities via their speech? Do particular social groups speak
in particular ways (consider categories like race, gender, age, etc.)?
Brooklyn 99 is a show based of reality and other shows as well. Meaning that how we
construct our identity in reality is very much similar to how characters construct their identity.
But what is unique about acting is that people tend to normally reinforce stereotypes or stray
from them and that was very much true for this show.
How does language (or silence) help construct the characters as powerless of powerful?
I think that silence can help reinforce the lack of power a character hold. The purpose of
media is to imitate reality and therefore if films and televisions series want to portray someone as
a weak, they will make them silent and look scrawny. If someone wants to show the power of a
specific character they will make the voice of the character louder and amplify it to make it clear.
What kind of characters are they (protagonists, antagonists, etc.)?
The protagonist of this television series is Jack Peralta he is also the main character if the
show. The rest of the cast as all important but no one is more important than Jack Peralta. In
every single episode he remains the center of action of center of the story. This show as well as
many other shows don’t have a distinctive antagonist that is clear to identify. But if I had to pick
a character that serves as a road block to Jack Peralta is the Pontiac thief. This character steals
many Pontiacs per year and Jack Peralta tries his best to catch him but when he does, he slips
between his fingers.
What kind of role do they have in the movie(main character, sidekick, etc.)?
The main character is Jack Perala all the characters serve to play back of him and what he
does. All the other characters play off this one character because he is the protagonist. The
second character is captain holt he is the new Captain of the Police division. He is my favorite
character because I like how he talks he speaks very formally and eloquent

This clip I have chosen to analysis is politeness in the workforce. In this episode of
Brooklyn 99 Jack and his coworker Diaz are working with Swedish detectives and I thought this
would be perfect clip to analyze since it relates perfectly to what we have discussed in class
recently. Chapter six was about the politeness and cross-cultural Communication. I thought this
scene was best suitable because it relates to the concepts that we have discussed in our online
lectures: Face & Greetings and Language & Politeness across Cultures. As we learn about
positive and negative notions of faces the Swedish detectives visiting the United statues
practiced positive faces in order to indicate positive relations. Another connection I made from
this television series and class lecture was that of etiquettes because the swedes introduced
themselves as soon as they entered the scene and were more strict on practicing formal
greetings/etiquettes.
