B . Character And Characterization.

a. Rachel Wu .
Rachel Wu is a smart woman, we can find out from a young age she was able to become
a professor in economics from one of the universities in America. Rachel Wu is also a
materialistic woman. We can see it from Rachel Wu's attitude even though her boyfriend
has a lot of money but he is not interested in the money that his girlfriend has. Rachel Wu
is a tough woman too, even though many abused her when Rachel Wu became known as
Nick Young's girlfriend. Rachel Wu also has an independent and brave nature because
she did not know her father and mother worked hard since her childhood, then she also
managed to get past the women who were chasing Nick Young so that you could say she
was a brave woman too.
b. Nick Young.
Nick Young has a humble nature although he is from a family that has a lot of wealth, he
is also loyal. Faithful to one partner, namely Rachel Wu. Although not allowed by his
mother, but Nick Young continues to try (never give up) get Rachel Wu. Nick Young is
also someone who is smart because he's been quite successful at a young age. One more
trait that we can follow is being obedient to parents even though Nick Young is from a
rich family but Nick Young always follows his mother's wishes.
c. Michelle Yeoh.
Michelle Yeoh, mother of Nick Young has an ambitious nature for trying to get rid of
Rachel Wu to be Nick Young's girlfriend. But, even so Nick Young's mother still has a
humble and smart personality.
d. Lisa Lu.
Lisa Lu is the grandmother of Nick Young. Lisa Lu is a truly noble and wise woman,
Lisa Lu herself likes Rachel Wu, who is Nick Young's girlfriend. The grandmother of
Nick Young is also patient because she wants to give various important lessons in life to
everyone.
e. Awkwafina
Awkwafina is a friend of Rachel Wu who knows because of a university. Awkwafina is a
very good friend because she wants to accept Rachel Wu when she is happy or when she
is sad. The Awkwafina family also wants to accept Rachel Wu, like her own child.

C . Summary Of The Movie

Rachel Chu (Constance Wu), a professor of economics at New York University, was eating in a
cafe with her boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), after teaching. Rachel accepts an
invitation to accompany Nick to Singapore for the marriage of her best friend, Colin (Chris
Pang), and her fiance, Araminta (Sonoya Mizuno). Peik Lin explained the history of Nick's
family wealth and the march at Colin's wedding, warning Rachel that Nick's extended family and
friends would criticize and mock Rachel even if Rachel didn't care about him.
Rachel is worried Eleanor doesn't like it even though Rachel seems to make a good impression
on Nick's grandmother, Su Yi (Lisa Lu). Rachel attends Araminta's bachelorette party where
Rachel meets Amanda (Jing Lusi), who reveals that she is Nick's ex-lover. Colin revealed about
Rachel who works in the United States and Nick who is expected to inherit his own family's
company. Rachel tells Nick about the bachelorette party and Nick apologizes to Rachel for not
telling him about his family. Later, Eleanor recounts the sacrifice he made to be part of the
Young family and tells Rachel that Rachel "will never be enough".
On the way to the wedding, Astrid feuded with Michael about the affair. Michael blamed his
unhappiness to Astrid and the wealth of the Astrid family, got out of their car and left Astrid
alone in the car. Using personal investigative evidence, they reveal that Rachel came from an
affair after Rachel's mother, Kerry (Tan Kheng Hua), left her husband and fled to the United
States, then they asked Nick to end the relationship with Rachel for fear of the scandal. Rachel
was silent because Kerry told her that her father was dead and ran away crying, while Nick was
chasing her despite being warned by Su Yi. Kerry arrived in Singapore to visit her suddenly and
explained that her husband was rude and that she was pregnant from an old friend who was
trying to comfort her, then ran away for fear of her husband.
Kerry told Rachel that Nick had arranged Kerry's visit and urged Rachel to talk to him. Rachel
meets Eleanor in the mahjong room and tells him that she refused Nick's proposal so that Nick's
relationship with her family will not be destroyed and that when Nick marries another woman
who is enough for Eleanor, it happens thanks to Rachel. Rachel accidentally lost the game to
Eleanor and left the room with Kerry. Astrid tells Michael that he will move out of their
apartment and blames Michael for the failure of their marriage.

E . Opinion.

This work by Kevin Kwan really touched many hearts of the viewers, both the comedy and
romantic sides that made the audience immersed in the atmosphere of the film being played.
Likewise with the selection of a very appropriate character to complete this film to win the hearts
of the audience. Likewise with the setting, clothing and atmosphere created.
This film can touch many viewers too because the storyline is sufficient to illustrate the reality of
reality that is also experienced by many couples who are forbidden by parents just because of the
economic status of the film. from various aspects that create new views in determining partners.
Couples are also not judged by their economic status, position or appearance. But the heart of a
sincere, faithful person who is able to overcome any obstacles in the relationship. This film also
teaches to not give up if you have challenges or problems and must be strong and brave to face
them.
