Topic: The Ship Lighting System

 Objective: by the end of the lesson you’ll be able to

- identify the types and purposes of ship lighting system;
- define the places of its location.

1. Engage
Activity 1. Watch the videos of two ships.
 What are their types? What’s the difference between them?
 What ship would you like to gain experience on? Why?
 Would you prefer more interesting or easier job? Why?

Activity 3. Read the text and highlight the types of ship lighting.
The Ship Lighting System
The ship’s lighting system is a subsystem of the ship service and emergency power systems. Its
primary function is to light the ship. It also provides power to small appliances and service
receptacles.
The lighting system is provided for general, local/ detail, emergency, portable and low level
illumination.
As for the general lighting, there belongs all lighting that provides all illumination for the
accommodations and ship spaces. Overhead and bulkhead-mounted lighting fixtures provide
general lighting for compartments and spaces.
Local/ Detail lighting is added where general lighting is inadequate for a specific task. Special
purpose lighting includes temporary lighting (portable lanterns, relay lanterns, and portable
floodlights), deck lighting, ship numeral lights, tunnels, store rooms, small technical places, etc.
Emergency lighting is provided for illumination of main spaces on board when the general
lighting is absent. As a rule such situation happens when there are faults with main propulsion
machinery.
Portable lighting are used while repairing works and for the enforcing of the general lighting in
the places of insufficient illumination.
Low level lighting includes red, yellow, low level white (LLW), and broad band blue (BBB)
illumination. The illumination is installed to minimize interference with dark vision. This is done
in selected living spaces, and access routes to the bridge and weather deck stations involved in
signaling, flight operations, and other nighttime topside duties. All weather deck lighting, except
navigation and signal lights, and any internal red lighting, that could be seen by another ship, are
converted to yellow lighting during peacetime conditions. This eliminates possible confusion with
navigation lights.
In accordance with the level of protection from the dust the lighting system is subdivided into
waterproof, closed and open illumination. The waterproof ship lighting has maximum protection
level from the dust and moisture, that’s why it is installed on the open decks and places of high
humidity, like battery store-rooms, showers and steam-rooms. Closed lamps are protected only
against splashes of water that can occur during cleaning of the rooms. They are installed in the
engine rooms, galleys, passage-ways, etc. Open lamps are mounted only in the spaces that are not
influenced by the environment.
Activity 4. Complete the chart.

Ship Illumination Purpose Application, Area

 Will the place/ location depend on the type of illumination?

Activity 5. Label the pictures and suggest the type of ship illumination and the place
for its application. Prove your choice.

technical and usual places.
2) All the ______________ should be provided with sufficient illumination.
3) The waterproof ship lights are ____________ on the open decks and places of high
humidity, like battery store-rooms, showers and steam-rooms.
4) If you are involved into repair works and you need there is ________________
lighting, use local or detail lamps.
5) Portable lanterns relay lanterns, and portable floodlights are considered to be
______________ lighting.
6) Weather deck lighting, ______________navigation and signal lights, that could be
seen by another ship, is converted to yellow lighting during peacetime conditions.

Activity 8. Prove your idea about the statement.

It is said that an Electrical Engineer has

the simplest job – deals with lamps
and this is the easiest work!
Activity 9. Agree or disagree with the statements.

1. Lighting system is very essential on board each vessel.

2. Overhead lighting provides emergency illumination.
3. If there is inadequate light for a specific work you need to improve the
general lighting.
4. Low level lighting is used in nighttime.
5. When there happens the emergency on board the illumination all over
the ship is red.
6. The weather deck is filled with yellow lighting for natural view.
7. Low level white illumination is used to provide dark adaptation for
nighttime periscope viewing.

Activity 10. Role-play the situation.

Cadet A is a Fire Inspector who came on board the vessel to check the
lighting system;
Cadet B and Cadet C are Electrical Engineers who are responsible for
ship lighting system.
Make the conversation.
