PREFACE
The volume in hand is published to present a collection
of all the available Sourch Materials for the history and
culture of Medieval Nepal, 740- 1768 A. D. Except the
manuscript colophons which have appeared already in the
accounts of the individual kings and dynasties as part of the
historical narrative all other data have found place in it
in their entirety.
The materials included here are the inssriptions of the
earlier period, the 14th century chronicles and the Thyiisapus
of the 17-18 centuries. But the inscriptions of the later
period could not find placz in this collectio~~. As it
happened the press was not able to handle the matter
without causing delay. So we decided to have the texts
of the inscriptions printed elsewhere. We have planned to
publish them in a separate book, which is coming out shortly.
Most of the materials published in this work are
absolutely original and they have seen the light of day for
the first time. It is hoped that the publication of such
materials will satisfy the long felt need for authentic sources
for the study of Nepalese history and culture.
The work is a result of extensive search. But more
materials are still lying untraced. I hope that further search
will help us to obtain more materials, which might be incor-
porated in the second edition.
The inscriptions are referred to in the Part I as appendix
in their serial number as chronologically arranged.
In the preparation of the present work I have received
help from many friends, to whom I an1 so much indebted.
In particular I would like to express my thanks to Mr.
Shubha Bir Pandey for doing different kinds of work in
connection with the publication and to Mr. K . L. Mukho-
padbyay for publishing the book.
Kathmandu.
1st of June, 1961.
In view of the bulk & cost of the volumes of Medieval
Nepal, it had been suggested that a limited edition of the
source materials be issued at a very low price for the
benefit of the serious students of Nepalese history & culture.
Accordingly the incriptions. diaries, land records, chronicles
etc. are included i n this third volume. A few illustrations
and artefacts are added in this part which do not appear
in the earlier volumes.

A s the nature of the materials in question is fully
described in the introductory chapter, we now proceed to
give the texts of the inscriptions and chronicles in the
forthcoming pages. Let us, first oE all, reproduce the texts

T h e first of the date sy~nbolsmust stand for 100. But
the name of king Rudradeva does not appear in the ancient
chronology at the date calculated with reference to this
reading. Tl~cepigraphy must belong to a period later than
111, IV, V and VI of our present series. If we read the
sy~ilbol as 200 then the date fits in with the regnal years
of Rudradeva 111, sou of Simhadeva, who ruled between

APPENDIX B
Gopal VatnSivali

T h e Gopiilaraja VatnjZvalil is written in palm leaves

in 36 folios. T h e text starts from the 17th folio and ends
aith the 63rd. T h e first written leaf has been used only
on one side, and this is numbered 17. Other leaves have
two sides written. There are many blank leaves. Towards
the end there is one leaf which also has writing only on
one side and is marked 50 at the margin. As the dates
covered in this extra folio shows, the text is the continua-
tion of the passage produced in folio 50.
Bendall has divided the text into 3 parts: -
V' from f. 17 to 3oa
V1l from f. 3ob to 36a
V1l1 from f. 36b to 63 including additional leaf

50b.
For our purpose the side of the folio with the page
mark is treated here as number b, while the side without
any marking passes as number a.

Regarding Errata
Numerous errors caused by the printers's devil and
faulty and careless proof reading have appeared in our
texts of inscriptions and cl~roniclesin this volume.
All these needed correction, and hence as in the case of the
English texts we have added an errata.

It appears that many errors were minor and this was

due to the doubtful writing in the ~ l l a n u s c r i ~
oft letters
snch asa and a, and p or q, 3 and 3, p and q or q,w
1
and 8 etc. If it was not for these minor errors, the errata
would not have swelled to the present length.

T h e attention of the scholar readers might be drawn to

two more factors relating the scribe's handling of the letters
while copying, which have been on to the print.
T h e first is in regard to the letter a. Nowhere in the
original records a is otherwise presented but it will be
noticed thrt we have a and ig in our texts. T h e reader has
got to be wary of this. Allother confusion arises because
of the scribe's using a comtnon symbol, ( ) for letters
introduced as possible reading anJ corrected version (ortho-
graphic or etymological). Ordinarily the sign [ ] is meant
to express letters of possible reading. But inadvertently
the simple brackets have been also used for the same
purpose. In order to clear the posit~on we intend to point
out below places in the text where letter within simple
brackets are shown to give tlieir possible rcadiog.
