Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real

needs
of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is an opinion that business turnover is enhanced solely by effective product promotion or publicity,
and the actual social demand does not affect in this regard. However, I completely disagree with the view
and think that advertising is not the ultimate measure to grow sales rather cost and quality of a product are
more important two factors that determine how well the product would be sold in the market.
The most important reason why I disagree is that now-a-days consumers are so clever that they are not
driven by the brand ambassador or product model rather they check the product quality by their own. In
other words, if a customer is convinced with the product material, specification, warranty and longevity,
only then he/she would pay for the product. A case in point is in Toyota, which spends a nominal
amount on commercial, but its relentless effort on quality development has taken its name to the
top position around the globe, and consequently company experiences the highest annual sales
every year. In brief, quality may outweigh product promotion in terms of sale.
Another important reason is that it is wise to lower the product cost instead of spending large
amount on product promotion, which would result more sales. That is to say that money spent on
advertisement may ultimately increase the final price of the product and as a consequence, a
traditional consumer would tend to find alternative. For instance, in 2019, Hitachi spent more on
product promotion and increased its product price which eventually lowered its annual sales.
However, many people argue that advertisement is a powerful tool to familiarize products to the
customers but it would finally fail to grab customers if the product is not economical. Thus, a
business planner should pay attention on cost minimization to stimulate its sales.
In conclusion, though the contribution of advertisement on sales is widely recognized, the real
market demand can not be overlooked. Personally I believe, popularity of a product is not merely
the reflection of product promotion but also of product quality and economy.
