INERNATIONAL HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Case 1: Establishing a branch of a family business in China

Q1: The Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory, developed by Geert Hofstede, is a

framework used to understand the differences in culture across countries and to distinguish
between different national cultures, the dimensions of culture, and their impact on
a business setting.

Hofstede identified six categories that define culture:

 Power Distance Index

 Collectivism vs. Individualism
 Uncertainty Avoidance Index
 Femininity vs. Masculinity
 Short-Term vs. Long-Term Orientation
 Restraint vs. Indulgence

According to the situation mentioned in the case study Power Distance Index is
applicable where the organisational structure is not definite. The employees in the Hong
Kong who are assigned work by the people whom they have never seen or there is not even
any interaction between them which has lead to misunderstanding and who are frustrated
with the present business operations and quitting their jobs shows that it is power distance
index which explains that the people who belong to low power index countries accepts high
power index countries which means they accept high power positions. It expresses the
emotional distance between employees and superiors. Power inequality exists in many
cultures, but may be more or less pronounced from culture to culture.

Q2. In countries like India, due to its diverse Nature, it would be difficult for the company to

work on its own terms. Moreover, the labours are protected by strict labour laws. If the
company is harsh, their employees would not be happy with the terms of the company due
to widened discrepancy among different level of organization in aspects of power,
remuneration etc. Therefore, the company has to decide it’s strategy and way of functioning
based on the viability.
2. Female Careers in Various Environments
Q1: This case study indicates the masculinity-femininity dimensions of Hofstede’s cultural
dimension theory. It refers to as “tough vs. tender,” and considers the preference of society
for achievement, attitude towards equality, behaviour, etc. It's important to note that
Hofstede's descriptions of these cultural types are based on gender stereotypes. In
Masculine societies social gender roles are clearly distinct where men are supposed to be
assertive, tough, and focused on material success; women are supposed to be more modest,
tender, and concerned with the quality of life. In Feminine societies both men and women
are supposed to be modest, tender, and concerned with the quality of life. Masculinity-
femininity measurement is pertinent right now. The masculine direction involves the quest
for Financial achievement and solid execution approach while the feminine direction
contains inclinations forever quality, unobtrusiveness and relational connections. Besides,
job adaptability in the female arranged societies is more obvious than in progressively manly
societies, as it were, jobs of the genders cover, which implies that both ladies and men could
be humble and values a specific personal satisfaction. From the long time there is gender
separation over each edge of the world. As well as, ongoing changes and unique laws like
right to balance the different laws passed by nations like India, US and UK has brought a
feeling of equivalent possibilities for everyone. We acknowledge that the social element of
femininity versus masculinity can be related to the conditions in Norway. By grasping the
Norwegian law that instructs associations to have 40% female people for their top
managerial staff and other certain booking in accessible empty situation of their association
for the ladies and men both similarly. This kind of acts or significant developments makes a
feeling of respect and uniformity on the general public. However, every nation has their
own laws, decides and guidelines that are acclimated to their limits and even in these
circumstance a few nations are making and giving chances to ladies.

Q2: Yes, it can be applied in all democratic countries provided the legislator are supportive
of it, in order to bring about a stringent law in this regard. Things might not be the case in
autocratic countries ,as some of the monarchs could be regressive in thinking. As time passes
by, this could be adopted in those countries too(As there are high chances of adoption from
westen counterparts).
