DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES

LECTURE HANDOUTS
LECTURE # 3
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOME
1. Understand the definition and characteristics of Rectilinear Translation
2. Analyze the problems involving Rectilinear Translation
3. Understand concept of Curvilinear Motion of a Particle
4. Analyze the velocity and acceleration in curvilinear motion
RECTILINEAR TRANSLATION
FREE FALL MOTION
The formula for free fall motion is the same as the kinematics formula. It differs from the
given acceleration. For free-fall motion the acceleration is equal to the gravity. The value for
gravity is 9.81 m/s2 or 32.2 ft/s2.
CURVILINEAR MOTION OF A PARTICLE
PROJECTILE MOTION (HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL COMPONENT)
The free – flight motion of a projectile is often studied in terms of its rectangular
components.

FOR HORIZONTAL COMPONENT

- The horizontal component of velocity always remains constant during the motion.

FOR VERTICAL COMPONENT

PROBLEM SOLVING
1. A sack slides off the ramp, shown with a horizontal velocity of 12 m/ s. If the height of the
ramp is 6 m from the floor, determine the time needed for the sack to strike the floor and
the range R where sacks begin to pile up.

2. The ball is kicked from point A with the initial velocity, vi = 10 m/s. Determine the range
R, and the speed when the ball strikes the ground.

3. The chipping machine is designed to eject wood chips at Vo = 25 ft/s as shown. If the tube
is oriented at 30° from the horizontal, determine how high, h, the chips strike the pile if at
this instant they land on the pile 20 ft from the tube.

4. A particle is thrown upward with a velocity of 2 ft/s. The time it hit the ground is 2.5
seconds. Determine the time it takes before it goes down and its maximum height. Neglect
air resistance.

5. A rock fell from a cliff. It hits the ground after 5 seconds. Determine the height at which
the rock fell and the speed at the instant it fell on the ground. Neglect air resistance.

6. The man jump from the plane having an initial velocity of 4.5 m/s. The height of the plane
to the ground is 500 meters. Determine the time it takes for him to hit the ground. Neglect
air resistance.
