Introduction

DC meter principle depend on the relation between the

current and magnetsim by moving coil glvanometer.

The D’Arsonval meter movement is an example of the

principle which can measure a small current.

We will study this meter and the ability to increase the

range of measurement by adding shunt resistor in

parallel with meter.

Experiment

1 – small current ( one range )

In this method the meter can measure a small current

in series with circuit.

The pointer deflection is proportional to the current

value.
2 – Increase the range of DC meter

We can increase the range by adding shunt

resistor in parallel with meter.

I = Ish + Im , Vsh = Vmeter , Ish Rsh = Im Rm

Rsh = Rm/n-1

Where n is multiplier factor

n = I/Im
3 – multi range DC meter

If we divide the shunt resistor , then we can get

multi range meter.

Rsh = ( Ra + Rb + Rc ) = Rm / n – 1
Power losses

Circuit - 1

P on 1A range

P = I^2 * Req

Req = .10098

P = .10098 w

P on 10 mA range

Req = 9.99

P = 1 mw
Circuit – 2

P on 1A range

P = I^2 * Req

Req = .1

P = .1 w

P on 10 mA range

Req = 10

P = 1 mw
Conclusion

DC meter depend on the magnetism theory an the

relation between current and magnetism.

The meter indicator depend on mechanical

deflection of pointer, where the deflection

proportional to the current value in meter.

To increase the range of meter, adding a resistor

in parallel with meter.
