Q1. Graph a Time Series (generate your own data for this purpose) that shows seasonal and trend
component.
Sol.: Following data is generated by my own for showing graphically seasonal and trend component
of time series.

Quarter
Year
1 2 3 4
1 4.8 4.1 6.0 6.5
2 5.8 6.2 6.8 7.4
3 6 5.6 7.5 7.8
4 6.3 5.9 8.0 8.4
Below calculation and graph is developed through Excel software:

Yt = St* It * Tt
 Yt = Sales (in 1000s)
 t = Time
 MA (4) = Moving average for four quarter
 CMA (4) = Central Moving Average
 St = Seasonal Component
 Tt = Trend Component
 It = Irregularity Component

Interpretation: We clearly can see from the above graph that there is some pattern in sales line of
cars, in every year there is a dip and a climax which seems to be a cycle, or we can call seasonality
because this cycle repeating itself along with a year. Another thing is the overall curve is linearly
increasing in upward direction. Hence, the trend line is linear in nature.
