Yesterday, I witnessed an accident in Jalan Pendidikan. I was
on my way home. It was 2 p.m. I was standing near the traffic lights. I
was about to go across the zebra crossing when the accident
happened.
A car that was recklessly driven by a young lady crashed
onto a van. She looked very young. She might not even have a
driving licence. The car was a complete wreck. The driver was badly
injured and her head was bleeding. Her passenger, a teenage a boy,
was not hurt but he was in a state of shock. He sat still in the car as
he was too stunned to get out of it.
The van driver got out of his vehicle. He was in a daze too
but unhurt. He took a look at his damaged van and shouted angrily.
By then, a big crowd had gathered at the scene. One of the passers
by called for an ambulance. Meanwhile a man controlled the traffic.

driver. Soon the crowd started to disperse. Then I continued my way

VISIT TO ORPHANAGE
Visit to Rumah Sayang Orphanage
It was a bright Sunday morning on 5 May 2016 when 20 of
the Social Society set out by school bus to Taman Sri Skudai for a
good cause: to visit the orphans in Rumah Sayang. The teacher
advisers who supervised the trip were Jeremy Koh and Andrew Leo.
The school bus arrived at the venue at 10a.m. The matron,
Mrs Lim, welcomed us. The orphans had lined up in the hall waiting
for us. The welcome we received from them was very warm and
touching.
We started off with an ice-breaking session. Then, we taught
them how to make paper cranes which were then stuffed into glass
bottles. It was a lot of fun especially towards the end. As for
performances, one orphans, Jane, danced to a hip-hop song. This was
followed by7-year old Shawn, who sang a Japanese song.
The children were really adorable. There was a little boy
named Ernest, who stuck to Jane and liked to sitting on her lap. There
were others volunteers there on that day too. There was one group of
people who gave them haircuts. Another group of volunteers gave
them tuition lesson.
The trip ended with a lot of hugs, goodbyes and a huge group
picture. Overall, it was a great and enjoyable experience and I think
some of us are already thinking of visiting them again soon.

VISIT TO OLD FOLK’S HOME
A Report on the Visit to the Mesra Old Folk's Home
Last Sunday, our school’s English Club organised a visit to Mesra
Old Folk's Home. 40 student members and two advisor teachers
took part in the visit. We travelled in a charted bus.
The objectives of the trip were to give an opportunity to the
members to help the elders financially and mentally and give
awareness to the members to respect the elderly.
We arrived at the old folk's home at 9.00 a.m. The owner of the old
folk's home welcomed us with open arms. They were very kind and
friendly. They narrated their stories and experiences to us. We were
so touched by their stories. Some of us cried after hearing their
stories. Many of them were sent by their children to the old folk's
home and some of them were orphans.
We also played some games with the elders. We were on cloud
nine at that moment. Some of the elders said that it had been a long
time since they were happy like this. Puan Sumiati, the advisor of our
club donated some sundries to the old folk's home at 6.00 p.m.
This visit can be acknowledged as a successful visit because the
students made a pledge that they would not send their parents to any
old folk's home in the future. We must appreciate the elderly because
they are more experienced than us. Their advice may be irritating but
what they say is good for us. The best way to show appreciation to
the elderly is by listening to their advice.

The charity carnival ended with the Starwalk on Wednesday.
It was participated by thousands of enthusiastic walkers from all

The carnival aimed to raise funds for orphanages in the country.

Dear Kelly,
My family and I went to Kuala Terengganu during the
semester break last week. We stayed there for two days and one night.
On the first day, we visited the Underwater Marine Life at
Pulau Lang Tengah. We dived in the crystal clear water to see the

we built some sandcastles on the white sandy beach. I managed to see
some eyries and we spent the entire day here.
On the second day, we went to witness the art of making
‘songket’ and ‘batik’. I bought you a batik scarf and batik handbag.
I’m sure you would love them. After that, we made our way home.

LANGKAWI ISLAND
Dear Kelly,
I am going to Langkawi with my friends. This would be a
great opportunity for us to bond. Moreover, we can visit this
legendary island and learn lots of its legends.
According to legend, a fairy princess married an earthly
prince and they were blessed with a child but the child died after birth
and the heart-broken princess buried her baby in the crystal clear
water of the lake. She blessed the waters so that any childless maiden
who bathes in this water will be blessed with a child. Interesting, isn’t
it?
We will also visit the Pulau Payar Marine Park which is a
heaven for snorkelers like us. We will be able to watch the
colourful spectrum of marine life.
I hope you will join us on this trip and I am sure it will be a
memorable one.

THE HOLIDAY IN PENANG ISLAND
Dear Christin,
I am going to Penang during the holidays. I won a slogan
writing competition and won two free tickets to a three-day-two-night
stay at Mutiara Beach Resort.
I would like you to come along as Penang is a wonderful
place to visit. We can go to the Pagoda temple and see the reclining
Buddha statue. I know you are a staunch Buddhist and so you would
enjoy being here.
Since we love food, we can try the famous Penang ‘asam
laksa’ and ‘char kway teow’ at Gurney Drive – a food paradise. You
must also try the Pasembur. It is scrumptious!
To top it all, the hotel we will be staying in has a variety of
Beach sports for us to indulge. We can go for buggy ride, parasailing,
water scooter and also snorkelling.
Isn’t that awesome? I do hope you will come as there is a
variety of activities for us to do especially since you are a beach
enthusiast. I look forward to a favourable reply from you. Warmest
regards to you and your family.

PULAU REDANG
Dear Christine,
Do you any plan for the coming holidays? If not, I would like
to invite you to join my cousins and I to one of Malaysia’s most
beautiful and exotic island – Pulau Redang.
It is a serene and peaceful island as it is away from the hustle
and bustle of the city. We can sit and watch the breath-taking
sunset and snorkel to see the world’s most mature coral garden.
Here, coral collection is prohibited and you can see the millions of
minute marine life that make up the corals.
What’s more attractive is the assortment of water sports that
we can do here – scuba diving, wind surfing, sailing, boating and
canoeing?
Now, isn’t that paradise? Do come with us and I am sure that
tthis trip is your cup of tea. I am looking forward to a favourable

FAVOURITE BEACH RESORT – BATU FERRINGHI
My favourite beach resort is Batu Ferringhi beach. The scene
on Batu Ferringhi beach is something I would love to draw and then
display the painting. On this beach, I can see many activities going
on. There are people taking strolls. They find this relaxing. Some
families are having picnics in a shady spot and the younger ones are
collecting colourful shells on the beach.
It is so nice to see everyone looking relaxed and in high
spirits. Some just lie on the deckchair and read a book or listen to the
radio. Some just want to sunbathe. In the clear blue sea, people are
rowing canoes, swimming and fishing. The more adventurous
people would sea-dive or surf.
The beach is the most crowded in the evening when the sun
is setting. As one stands on the shoreline, one can see the horizon
and sunset. It is really such a beautiful sight. At night, it is common
to see beach parties or barbecues full of happy people. They are
dancing, singing and eating, all at the same time.

A TRIP TO MAXWELL HILL
Last month, my friends and I joined a camping trip to
Maxwell Hill. As we had never been there, we felt excited and yet
apprehensive too. It was a two-night and three-day stay out there.
On the first day, we started the journey from the clubhouse
near my house early in the morning. Our group leader, Rashid, had
arranged for a van to pick us up. There were ten of us. When we
reached the camping site, the first thing we did was to pitch the
tents. It was quite tiring but we enjoyed ourselves as much.
Fortunately, we had managed to get a good site in a shady place to
camp.
After that, we decided to swim in the nearby waterfall. The
water was cold and refreshing. That night, we had a campfire. Earlier
we had collected some firewood in the forest. We barbecued fish over
a fire. We also brought some canned food and dried meat. All of us
had a hearty meal.
The next day, we trekked the jungle. We saw many rare
species of flowers and plants. We were really fascinated of the size
and colours of the wild flowers. We jotted down some notes and also
took pictures of them.
On the last day, we cleaned our camping site before we left
Maxwell Hill with sweet memories of its natural beauty. It was
indeed a fruitful trip.

9th July 2020
Dear Christine,
How are you? In your previous letter, you asked for advice on
eating in a healthy manner. I am happy to give you the advice.
There are some ways to eat healthily. First, read the labels of
the food that you buy. This is to check if sugar or fat is among the
first two ingredients. If they are, the food has more of that ingredient
than anything else. It is not healthy to eat.
A healthy diet should be balanced. So limit your total fat
intake. Eat more vegetable and fruit. This food gives us vitamins,
minerals and fibre. It is good to eat more grain. Cereals and oatmeal
are in the grain group. If we want to eat snacks, choose snacks from
different food groups such as an apple or a bean jelly.
I hope you find my advice useful. Follow my advice and you
will be healthy.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE
Exercise does so many great things for you that you may not
be aware of. In fact, it is the simplest and best solution for stress,
weight problems, depression, boredom and conditioning of the
heart. It also builds self-confidence and self-esteem. The outcome of
it is it makes you feel great.
How does one start an exercise programme? Finding a sport to
play is an important start. There are two important things to consider
when choosing an athletic activity. Firstly, the movement it involves
and secondly, the fun that is in store for you. If you enjoy it, you tend
to do it several times a week.
Sports sometimes often come into the scene in cycles or fads.
You may want to get involved in a particular activity because it is
the one everyone else is doing. However, going for a popular sport
can be a good way to get involved in athletics but it can also be
frustrating, discouraging and sometimes expensive.
If something like that happens to you, look around you until
you find a sport that you can do and one that you will enjoy. Trends
may not last for long, but the effects of a good exercise programme
last a lifetime.
Beautiful Sentences:
1. Exercise does so many great things for you that you may not be aware
of.
2. In fact, it is the simplest and best solution for stress, weight problems,
depression, boredom and conditioning of the heart.
3. It also builds self-confidence and self-esteem.
4. If you enjoy it, you tend to do it several times a week.
5. Trends may not last for long, but the effects of a good exercise
programme last a lifetime.
COPING WITH STRESS
Good morning, fellow club members. The topic of my speech
is on a topic which should interest us. It is on how we can manage
stress.
Every day people are concerned with stress. The amount of
stress a person feels depends on both internal factors such as the
person's personality and mental state as well as external factors such
as the daily home or work environment.
Coping with stress can be easy or difficult depends on how we
look at it. The common solution for work or studies related stress is
to simply take some time off and remove oneself from the stressful
situation for a while. Of course other ways include learn how to best
relax oneself , taking up meditation and breathing exercises.
Another way is to reduce the number of events going on in
your life. Try to prioritize a few truly important things and let the
rest slide. Handle each task as it comes or selectively deal with
matters in some priority. Try to be positive at all times. And if stress
is putting you in an unmanageable state or interferes with your
schoolwork, you have to seek professional help at your school
counselling.
I hope I have helped some of you who are going through
stress. Thank you.
Beautiful Sentences:
1. Every day people are concerned with stress.
2. Coping with stress can be easy or difficult depends on how we look at
it.
3. Of course other ways include learn how to best relax oneself ,
taking up meditation and breathing exercises.
4. Try to prioritize a few truly important things and let the rest slide.
5. Try to be positive at all times.
PREPARING FOR EXAMS
Not surprisingly, many students are terrified of exams. To
them, it is an ordeal which should not be made part of their school
lives. However, if follow the proper techniques of preparing for an
examination, I am sure most of them would be able to overcome fear
and have more confidence in facing the examination.
One of the ways, which must be adhered to all the time, is
attending classes. Students must attend classes regularly. In class,
pay attention to what is being taught and understand the lessons well.
If they have any doubts, clear them with their teacher immediately.
Prepare a study timetable. This will help the students organise
their time well. At the same time, they would able to cover all the
topics they need to revise. However, the timetable must be a realistic
and flexible one. In the schedule, the periods of study must be
interspersed with periods of relaxation.
Adopt the study method that they like the best. Some students
prefer to study alone while others prefer to study in groups. Whatever
it is, plan the topics you want to study or discuss in your study group.
If you are studying in a group, share your ideas. Students also must
try out past years' questions to familiarise themselves with the exam
questions.
While busy studying, make sure you look after your health.
You have to be fit, refreshed and mentally prepared for the big day
of your exam. So, it is important that you have enough sleep and
nutritious food during the revision period.
Beautiful Sentences:
1. Not surprisingly, many students are terrified of exams.
2. To them, it is an ordeal which should not be made part of their school
lives.
3. However, if follow the proper techniques of preparing for an
examination, I am sure most of them would be able to overcome fear
and have more confidence in facing the examination.
4. In the schedule, the periods of study must be interspersed with periods
of relaxation.
5. You have to be fit, refreshed and mentally prepared for the big day of
your exam.
USEFUL WAYS TO SPEND LEISURE TIME
Leisure time is set aside for relaxation. There can be useful
and yet exciting ways to spend our leisure time. Some suggestions
include reading, taking part in sports and doing charity work.
Reading is one of the best ways to spend our free time.
Besides spending our time in a relaxing manner, reading also has
many benefits. It helps to improve our language, grammar and
vocabulary skills. Moreover, it improves our general knowledge and
gives us a better insight into life. We can learn a lot about other
countries, their cultures and people without travelling to these places.
Engaging in physical exercises and sports is another fantastic
way of spending our leisure time. Exercise dears the mind and
makes the body healthy. It is also a good way to relieve stress.
Examples of sports activities we take up are swimming, jogging and
playing games.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding ways to spend leisure
time is doing charity work at special homes for the disabled, the blind
and the aged. This is by signing up as a volunteer. We gain benefits
that are two-fold. By making others happy, we are making ourselves
happy too.
With so many ways to spend one's leisure time at our
disposal, one wonders why youths today spend their free time on
dangerous pursuits like taking drugs, smoking and dangerous sports
like racing. They are detrimental to one's life, health and incur high
expenses.
Beautiful Sentences:
1. Leisure time is set aside for relaxation.
2. There can be useful and yet exciting ways to spend our leisure time.
3. Moreover, it improves our general knowledge and gives us a better
insight into life.
4. We gain benefits that are two-fold.
5. They are detrimental to one's life, health and incur high expenses.
THE TIPS TO LOSE WEIGHT
48 Jalan Kemajuan 21,
Taman Universiti,
81300 Skudai,
Johor Bahru.
9th July 2020
Dear Christine,
I received your letter yesterday. In your letter, you told me
that you have put on a lot of weight. You now weigh 75 kg. All your
shirts and trousers are too tight now and you feel you sluggish and
lazy.
Well, I'm not surprised that you feel this way. You must stop
putting on more weight. At your height and weight now, you are 25
kg overweight. Being overweight or obese can have a serious impact
on your health.
It is not difficult to get rid of excess weight. All you need is
some discipline. You will also need tons of willpower. Follow a
strict programme of healthy eating and exercise. Eat lots of fresh
fruits and vegetables as these provide a rich supply of vitamins,
minerals and fibre. At the same time, go easy on foods that are rich in
fat and oil. Avoid sweet food like chocolates and cakes. Such food
contain a lot of sugar and this will make you gain a lot of weight.
Eating healthy food must be accompanied by good eating
habits as well. Take three meals a day at regular times. Never skip
breakfast. You can have toast and a glass of milk. For lunch, you can
have a sandwich and an apple. Cut down on dinner for this is the last
meal of the day. You don't need energy to sleep now, do you?
And of course, you need to exercise, at least 30 minutes every
day. Take up walking, cycling or swimming. Exercise burns calories
and builds up muscle.
I hope you will follow my advice. I'm sure you will lose the
excess weight in no time. I'll be waiting to hear the good news. Good
luck Christine!
Your cousin,
Lim Sherine
