Tigers
Tigers are generally a large species with average measurements of 70 to 120 centimetres. These animals
can weigh up to 300 kilogrammes. They are equipped with short heavily muscled forelegs, strong teeth
and sharp retractable claws, which make them the ultimate predators. Unlike most cats, the Malayan tigers
often swim and play in streams and lakes. As the biggest of the forest predators, the hot and humid weather
probably also affects them. Being carnivores, their diet and natural prey consist mainly of large mammals,
including seladang and wild cattle.
This animal species has been facing threats for many years due to several reasons. The biggest threat
is habitat loss and poaching. Overhunting the tigers’ main prey can also affect the population of tigers in
the forest. The more prey hunted, the lesser the food left for the tigers, causing them to have smaller and
insufficient food intake that would eventually lead to a drop in the population.
The Malayan tiger is one of the smallest tigers in the world. These majestic creatures can mostly be
found in the forests of Pahang, Perak, Kelantan and Terengganu. Based on the National Tiger Action Plan
for Malaysia, the three identified priority areas for tigers in Peninsular Malaysia are the Belum-Temenggor
Forest Complex, Taman Negara and the Endau-Rompin Forest Complex. Malaysia was estimated to have
3000 tigers back in the 1950s but unfortunately, their numbers have seen a drastic drop to about 250 to
340 tigers in just over half a century.

How Our Clothes Destroy Mother Earth

Do you know that clothes contribute to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions? That is a bigger amount than the
gas emissions produced by aeroplanes and ships combined. Three out of five items of clothing are discarded
every year. Most of them end up being burned or sent to landfills. Yet, many of us keep buying clothes, not
realising that every kilogramme of them contributes about three to four kilogrammes of carbon dioxide and
other harmful gases into the atmosphere. Not only that, it takes around 2650 litres of water just to make one
T-shirt!
How do you save the environment through fashion? Instead of throwing away your clothes,
try recycling them. You can donate them to others who need clothes. If they are too worn out, repurpose
them as floor mats, washcloths or turn them into creative crafts like a bag. You may even earn money by
selling them and raising awareness at the same time!
Prevention is always better than cure. You can also decrease the impact of fashion by creating a capsule
wardrobe – buy fewer clothes and choose well. Mix and match versatile clothing to obtain maximum use
out of minimal possessions. Avoiding impulse buys by learning how to distinguish between needs and
wants is helpful. Also, buy clothing only when needed. Choosing natural fibres such as cotton and wool
can also help. Last but not least, proper upkeep of your clothing may allow your clothes to have a longer
lifespan. Wash less often and mend when needed, so they do not wear out quickly.

Complete the following table.

Choose no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each answer.

A Cooking Workshop
Last weekend, Kate attended a cooking workshop. She was a good cook, but she wanted to improve her
skills.
The workshop was held at the Lim Cooking School. Last year, Kate attended another cooking workshop
which was held at the Danny Cooking Institute. She enjoyed the workshop, but it was held a bit far from
her home. The fee for this year’s workshop was RM200. It was slightly cheaper than last year’s workshop
which was RM250. This year the workshop was held on a Sunday, so that more people could attend it.
The workshop Kate attended last year was held on a Friday. Therefore, there were not many participants.
In order to get to the workshop this year, she first took a taxi. She then took a bus to her destination.
Kate arrived at the workshop at ten in the morning. Most of the participants were already there.
The workshop began at half past ten. It was hosted by Chef Michael Lim. Originally, the workshop
was supposed to be conducted by Chef Andrew Tan, but he could not make it. Before the workshop started,
Chef Michael Lim spoke a bit about himself. He had worked in world-class restaurants overseas before
returning to Malaysia. He had worked in France, Switzerland and Japan.
The first dish the participants were taught was a chicken salad. It was not difficult, but there were
many steps involved in making it. Next, the participants made the main meal which was lamb chop.
It was delicious. Finally, the participants were taught to make a strawberry cake. It was not too sweet,
yet full of flavour.
The participants were also taught how to use the knife properly and other useful cooking skills.
Everyone enjoyed themselves very much. Kate was glad she had attended the workshop.

PRACTICE 1
Questions 1 to 4
You are going to read a story about a rich man talking to a bird. Four sentences have been removed from
the story. Choose from the sentences (A–D) to fit each gap (1–4). For each question, write the correct
answer (A–D).

The Three Rules

Once, there was a very wealthy but greedy man. His name was Chulong. One day, he was walking in his garden.

He saw a small and beautiful bird. He slowly went near the bush and caught the bird. ‘Why did you catch me?’

the bird asked. (1) D ‘But you are already rich. Why do you want more?’ asked the bird. ‘I want

to become richer,’ replied Chulong. ‘Don’t dream of making money through me!’ said the bird. ‘Nobody will
buy me. I have lost my beauty and my sweet voice.’ Then, it slowly turned into a black bird. Chulong was upset.
The bird then suggested, ‘Well, set me free. In return, I shall teach you three simple but useful rules.’

(2) C ‘But these rules can profit you greatly,’ added the bird. ‘Profit me? Really? Then,
I shall set you free. But how can I trust you? You may fly away,’ said Chulong. ‘I give you my word.
I always keep my word,’ said the bird.

(3) B It flew up to a tree branch at once. Its colour started to change. It became
beautiful once again. Chulong said, ‘Now teach me the rules.’

(4) A Then, it added, ‘The first rule is that you should not believe everything others
say. The second rule is you should not be sad about something you do not have. The third rule is you
should not throw away what you have in your hand.’

A ‘Certainly,’ said the bird.

B Chulong released the bird.
C ‘What is the use of rules? I only want money,’ said Chulong.
D ‘I want to make money. I can sell you for a big amount,’ replied Chulong.

(5) G

My school is located in the quiet part of the town. So, we don’t hear traffic when we are in class.

(6) F This type of environment is perfect for studying!

Although the school is old, the facilities are modern. The library has computers with Internet access.
Students can use them anytime they want. There is a netball court and a badminton court near the football
field.

During my first week here, I made some new friends. (7) H There is also a boy named

Ben from a different class. We all enjoy music and dancing. I’m glad they were friendly when I felt lonely
and lost on my first day of school.
The teachers here are great. They make classes fun and interesting. I am really fond of Puan Khadijah.

(8) E That’s why I score good marks in that subject now.

That is all from me. Please send my regards to Sheila and the rest of our friends. Bye!

Your best friend,

Elsa

Questions 1 to 4
You are going to read a story about a trip to a mummy-making museum. Four sentences have been removed
from the story. Choose from the sentences (A–D) to fit each gap (1–4). For each question, write the correct
answer (A–D).

A Trip to the Mummy-Making Museum

My brother went to Egypt last week and when he came back, all he talked about was the mummies.
My mum sensed my jealousy and decided to take my best friend and me to a mummy-making museum.
We sang happily along the way. Upon arrival, we were taken to a small theatre to watch a documentary
of how ancient Egyptians cleaned the dead and removed their organs. Then, we were taken to The Cleansing
Room. Inside, there were several life-sized plastic models lying on beds. The friendly staff showed us how

to remove the life-like organs inside the models one by one. (1) D The ancient Egyptians

believed that the heart was the seat of a person’s intelligence, so it had to stay in the body!
Next, we proceeded to The Natron Room. We were briefed that natron is a chemical salt which was

used as a preservative. (2) A

(3) C This was the highlight of the trip. We were each given our own mummy doll

and shown the special techniques of wrapping it. We were also provided with fragrant resins to make sure
our wrappings stuck.
My best friend and I were over the moon when we were informed that we could bring home our own

hand-wrapped mummy doll! (4) B

A The ancient Egyptians used this to dry out the body and organs for 40 days.
B I could not thank my mother enough for taking us there.
C The last room we were taken to was The Wrapping Room.
D However, we were warned not to remove the heart.

Questions 5 to 8
You are going to read an article about tigers. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose
from the sentences (E–H) to fit each gap (5–8). For each question, write the correct answer (E–H).

About Tigers
Tigers are an important symbol in the Asian culture, especially in the far East. They symbolise strength

and courage. (5) F A person born in the year of the tiger is thought as sensitive and often

short-tempered.
In traditional Chinese medicine, the body parts of a tiger are believed to cure illnesses. However, there
is no proof that these medicines are effective. The demands for medicine made from tiger parts remain

popular. (6) G In many countries, their numbers continue to become smaller.

In India, tigers are also losing their battle against illegal hunters. Tigers are killed with poisoned meat.

(7) E Sadly, other wildlife such as deer and bears get caught too and lose their lives in the

process.

(8) H Tigers and other animals do not have much space left as their home. Today,

there are not many of them left in the wild.

Everyone needs to be educated on the importance of protecting the tigers and other animals. Failure
to do so may result in the future generation not being able to see them anymore.

E Traps are also used to catch tigers.

F They are also one of the twelve animals featured in the Chinese zodiac.
G This has affected the population of tigers.
H Humans needing more land to build farms and houses cause harm to wildlife.

Questions 1 to 4
You are going to read an article about a flood. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose
from the sentences (A–D) to fit each gap (1–4). For each question, mark the correct answer (A–D).

Flood in the Neighbourhood

The Taman Kenanga neighbourhood had never experienced floods. However, due to the clogged drains

there was a flood last monsoon season. (1) B One morning, the water started to rise in
the neighbourhood.
The residents did not know what to do. When the water continued to rise, Encik Ahmad called up the
fire and rescue department. They told him to gather his valuable belongings and documents and to move to
higher ground. They also told Encik Ahmad to inform his neighbours of the plan. So Encik Ahmad quickly
told his family to gather their valuables and documents. He then went and informed his neighbours what
to do.

After everyone had gathered their things, they tried driving to a nearby hill. (2) D

They then abandoned their cars and walked instead. It was not easy and children had to be carried. They
finally reached the hill after an hour. The residents went as high as they could.

They were exhausted. Most of them fell asleep the moment they felt they were safe. (3) A

Only a few of them had brought food which they shared among themselves. They hoped they would be
rescued soon.
It was almost night time when the firemen finally came to rescue them. They had brought rescue boats.
The firemen then took the residents to another neighbourhood called Taman Mawar.
The residents of Taman Kenanga had to stay at a school while waiting for the flood to subside.

(4) C The residents went back home. They were shocked to see the damage to their homes

and other personal belongings.

The residents vowed never to throw rubbish in their drains again. The neighbourhood no longer
experiences flooding when it rains heavily.

A When the residents woke up, they felt cold and hungry.
B It rained heavily for a few days.
C After a few days, the flood subsided.
D However, their cars could not move in the flood.

Questions 5 to 8
You are going to read an article about safety at home. Four sentences have been removed from the article.
Choose from the sentences (E–H) to fit each gap (5–8). For each question, write the correct answer (E–H).

Safety at Home
These days, many children are often left at home when their parents are at work. Even if they are not alone,
children and parents should learn some important home safety tips.

Firstly, do not leave gates and doors unlocked (5) F If you do, robbers and kidnappers

will find it easy to break into your homes.

Secondly, never leave sharp objects like knives where they can cause accidents. (6) H

This is also to prevent babies and toddlers from getting to them.

Children should never cook or use the kitchen without their parents. (7) G If you are

not careful, an unwatched gas stove may cause a fire. This is often the cause of fires at home.

The next piece of advice may sound simple, but it is helpful in emergencies. (8) E

These may include emergency services, the nearest hospital and police station, and family members and
neighbours.
Being prepared is usually what keeps everyone safe.

E Keep a list of important phone numbers where everyone can see them.
F It is also wise to not leave keys near the doors or windows.
G Parents, do not do other things when you are cooking.
H Keep them in drawers after using them.

Hi Linda,
I am fine. You are right; I have been involved in charity work for some time now. So I do have
a few suggestions for you.

Senior citizens need blankets and socks to keep them warm. Most of them have poor eyesight, so large
print books are good. Games and puzzles would also keep their minds active and provide them with
some fun. Finally, some fluffy towels would be good too.

Stay safe and regards,

Millie

Finally, mention that you are looking forward to working together. You may thank the teachers and
members again at the end.

All the venues you suggested for your birthday party sound interesting. However, I feel the most suitable
place should be at your home. If you have your party at home, you can invite as many people as you
want. The place might be limited at a restaurant and you may not be able to invite all your relatives and

Save Electricity, Save Our Environment

Our Earth faces many environmental issues. One problem is using too much energy. We can minimise the
use of electricity in several ways.
Firstly, we can switch off anything that is not being used. Remember, you are wasting electricity if
you leave your appliances plugged in.
Another way to minimise the use of electricity is by opening the windows to let the wind into our homes
and reduce the use of an air-conditioner or fan. Besides that, we allow natural light into the house.

Crispy Prawns Biryani Rice

There is this one dish I will never forget, Crispy Prawns Biryani Rice. Two months ago, while my family
and I were on a holiday in Rembau, Negeri Sembilan, we stumbled upon this tiny restaurant called Budget
Food Station. The restaurant has a special menu where biryani rice is served in a small conical shape and
served with crispy deep fried prawns.
On weekdays, the restaurant opens from 8.00 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. while on weekends, it is open from
8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. It is closed during public holidays. Budget Food Station is located along Jalan
Jasmin, Rembau.
You wouldn’t believe it but during our holiday in Rembau, we had our lunch there almost every day!
We knew that the Crispy Prawns Biryani Rice would be sold out by 3.30 p.m., so we had to be there by
11.00 a.m. By 12.00 noon, there would be a long queue waiting for a table.
The deep fried prawns were simply delicious. They were not only crunchy, but delicious and flavourful
too! The restaurant serves both deep fried prawns and sambal prawns. You can order prawns of any size
and they will be served with the rice.
Besides that, their sauces are mouth-watering too. The mustard dipping sauce is slightly salty and tangy
while the chilli sauce is sweet and spicy. Both sauces really enhance the taste of the fried prawns.
So the next time you are in Rembau, don’t forget to stop by at Budget Food Station!

You are going to read a story about two travellers who met a bear. Four sentences have been removed from
the story. Choose from the sentences (A–D) to fit each gap (33–36). For each question, write the correct
answer (A–D).

The Two Travellers and the Bear

One day, two young men were travelling together. They were happily on their way, when suddenly, a big
brown bear appeared. It started to chase them.
The first man managed to climb up a tree in the nick of time. He hid high in the branches. The second
man, who could not climb, felt sure he would be attacked. 33 A He held his breath and kept very still.
The bear came up to the second man. Slowly, it sniffed him all over. The man shut his eyes tightly.
Although he felt very afraid, he remained motionless and pretended to be dead. Soon, the big brown bear
lost interest in him and left. 34 C
When the bear was gone, the first man came down from the tree. 35 D With a grin, he asked his
friend, ‘Just what was it that the bear whispered in your ear?’
The second man replied, ‘As a matter of fact, the bear gave me this very sound advice. 36 B ’
His friend blushed in shame.

A Feeling quite hopeless, he quickly lay flat on the ground.

B It said: never travel with a friend who leaves you in times of danger.
C It is said that bears will not touch a dead body.
D He was curious.

You are going to read an article about giraffes. Four sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the
sentences (E–H) to fit each gap (37–40). For each question, write the correct answer (E–H).

Giraffes
The giraffe is a unique animal. In the past, people could not believe their ears when they heard stories
of this extremely tall animal from travellers who returned from Africa. 37 H The height of an adult
giraffe is between 4.3 and 5.5 metres.
38 F The giraffe’s long neck allows it to reach food high above the ground. However, the giraffe
has difficulty in drinking water because of this. It has to spread its long legs apart to reach the water level.
Male giraffes are not friendly among themselves. They will fight one another using their necks and
heads. 39 E The group can often be seen among zebras and antelopes.
Female giraffes give birth to only one calf at a time. A calf can grow up to 2.7 metres in height at the
age of six months. Lions often attack and prey on calves.
Giraffes used to be found all over Africa. Unfortunately, the number of giraffes has decreased because
of illegal hunting and loss of habitat. 40 G

E Each male usually runs with other giraffes.

F The giraffe eats mainly twigs and leaves of trees.
G We must play our part to protect them from becoming extinct.
H The giraffe is known as the tallest animal on Earth.

Hello!

I’m starting Form 1 this year. I’m wondering what after-school club or society I should join.
There are uniformed societies, sports and clubs like English or Science. Which one should I
join?

Give me your ideas, please!

Adlin

In about 80 words, write a message to Adlin giving her some ideas.

(Suggested answer)

Hi, Adlin. It’s good to hear from you. I’m starting secondary school this year too. I’ve decided on joining
the Hockey Club.
For you, what do you think about joining the Chess Club? You told me you thought the game was
interesting. By joining this club, you can play chess with other students in school. Since you like science,
I think you could also join the Science Club. They may organise field trips.
Let me know what you decide.

Your cousin,
Mimah

I love going to the funfair not far from my house. It’s only a five-minute drive away. Grandpa and Grandma
take me and my sister Devi there on some Sundays.
We love riding the Ferris wheel. It’s nice to see the city from high up. We also play some games at the
funfair to win prizes. I have won a cute stuffed toy before!
Many families visit the funfair at night. That’s when they can buy food like popcorn and burgers. I think
the funfair food is delicious!
