Kihei Charter

Chess Tournament

Israel Padilla
Senior Project 2019
Preface

Chess one of the world's earliest strategy games created in the 6th century this

game has been played by kings and generals. I fell in love with the game of chess in

third grade when a teacher would come into our class and teach it to us. Immediately I

fell in love with the game something about it just drew me in maybe it was the possibility

of endless ways and combinations of being able to defeat your opponent or how

complex the pieces were and how they each had their own way of moving. I've always

been on and off with chess I didn't really play it when I moved to Hawaii mostly because

of kids in my school not knowing how to play once in a while I would find somebody who

could play but I never play consistently.

When I transferred to Kihei Charter I found out there was a small number of kids

who would play in the cafeteria I didn't really have friends yet so I decided that it couldn't

hurt to try and play. Consequently, I was very rusty having not played in years however

it did revive my love for the game and I became friends with the guys I played against.

After that day we’d go every lunch to the cafeteria and play chess. Eventually, I begin to

get my skills to what they once were although I'm probably the worst player in the

school I didn't mind because of how much I love chess.

That's why I've decided to hold a tournament, I think this is a great idea because

there are a lot of people who play chess at this school. Another reason I would like to do

this is that there are always arguments about who is a better player I think this chess
tournament will finally decide that. The competition will be timed that way we don't go

over lunchtime and there will prizes. I've decided the way the tournament will structure

will be by best out of three in the group stages then it will go into the quarter-finals

where it will just be one game. The winner gets to move on that way we can save time

after that the semi-finals and the finals will follow the same rules as the quarter-finals

the winner will probably get a gift card or something like that and will be crowned the

best chess player of Kihei charter.

Introduction

Driving Question

How can I successfully create a fair and fun chess tournament that will be

respected in order to be able to crown a winner

Key Content Knowledge

For a chess tournament, I've done a little bit of research on how to properly hold

a tournament. Another thing is that it has to be timed so that the tournament can

move smoothly and won't take longers that it needs too. I've also learned how to

officiate the games so that there is no cheating and make rules that are fair.

Lastly, I have also been looking at different brackets and structures to see which

would be the best for our tournament and the limited time we got.

21st Century Skills

● Flexibility: this skill will help if I need to switch any dates

● Initiative: because I started a chess tournament

● Information literacy: this one because I had to look at different stats about

successful tournaments

● Leadership: motivating people to compete in the tournament

Limitations

Some limitations I might encounter throughout the project are not getting enough

people to participate. Another problem I may run into is not having a chessboard

for the player. I've also thought about not having enough time to complete the
games or not being able to make time. Lastly is getting a good prize that will

make people want to compete.

Deliverables

For my deliverables, I will be taking pictures and a couple of videos. The pictures

will show the bracket they will also show some of the games. For the videos, I

want to record the finals and the winner when he gets his prize.

Resources and Activities

Resources/Materials Needed

For my materials I will need 4-6 chessboard just to be safe I will contact Mr.

Holmgreen to see if he has any available chessboard. Another material will be

chess timers which we can get a free app on our phones so that won't be a

problem. The prize will also be a material that I'll need.

Budget

The budget for the project will be 50 dollars that's what I want the prize to be

worth it will most likely be a gift card I'm thinking Amazon.
