In a Type 3 conditional sentence, the tense in the ‘if’ clause is the past
perfect, and the tense in the main clause is the perfect conditional:
If you had worked harder you would have passed the exam.
Affirmative
If we had bought the TV, we would have watched the game at home.
If he had scored the goal, we would have won the game.
Negative
If they hadn’t called the police, the thieves could have escaped
If you hadn’t written the letter, you wouldn’t have gotten the discount
Interrogative
Would you have finished the report if you had had more time?
If they had lent you their car, where would you have gone?
Sometimes, instead of would , could and might are used:
THIRD CONDITIONAL
WOULD If I had remembered it was your birthay, I would have bought you a present.
Examples
If you had put yeast, the cake would have risen. If I had asked you, would you have helped me?
