Tutorial #1
Date : July 18, 2019

Required : Microsoft EXCEL and Microsoft Word.

Consider a hypothetical hull girder of length 100 m.

(a) The weight distribution is as follows :

 Total weight = 1000 T
 Engine weight = 50 T, located between Stn# 0.5 and Stn# 2
 Steel + Outfit weight (200 T) distribution is between Stn#0 and Stn#10, as seen in Fig.1. It is a
symmetric trapezium (find the height).
 The cargo is 700 T, distributed between Stn#2 and Stn#9. The remaining deadweight is between
Stn#2 and Stn#4.
 In the unloaded (lightship) condition, ballast water of half the cargo weight is filled in the blast
tanks (located uniformly between Stn#1 and Stn#9).

(b) The buoyancy distribution is as follows: 𝐵(𝑥) = B0 sin ( ). Find the magnitude of 𝐵0 from
𝐿
Archimedes Principle, for both loaded and unloaded condition.

To do
 Generate a station-wise EXCEL sheet for lightship (unloaded) and fully loaded condition.
 Generate the Shear force diagram for the unloaded and loaded condition. Label it and report the
location and magnitude of the maximum shear force.
 Generate the bending moment diagram for the unloaded and fully loaded condition. Label it and
report the location and magnitude of the maximum bending moment.
 Locate the LCG (Longitudinal Centre of Gravity) and LCB (Longitudinal Centre of Buoyancy)
for both conditions and comment on the trim. Both the points are measured from the AP.
