PARTENOPE 205 PARTENOPE Opera in three acts Libretto by Silvio Stampiglia First performed at King’s Theater, Haymarket, London ‘on February 24, 1730 CHARACTERS Partenope, Queen of Naples, in love with Arsace: soprano ‘Arsace, Prince of Corinth, in love with Rosmira and later Partenope: contralto Rosmira, Princess of Cyprus, disguised as a man (Burimene): alto ‘Anmnindo, Prince of Rhodes, also in love with Partenope: alto Emilio, Prince of Cuma,' also in love with Partenope: tenor Onmonte, captain of Partenope's guard: bass Soldiers, Naples populace ‘THE PLOT ACTI In a scene of great ceremony, Partenope invokes the blessing of Apollo on her newly founded city of Naples, but soon finds herself the center of a multi-faceted intrigue. The queen's favorite suitor, Arsace, and Partenope renew vows of eternal fidelity, but Arsace has already tacitly admitted he loves Rosmira, who has arrived in Naples disguised as the ‘Armenian prince Eurimene claiming to have been shipwrecked. Armindo, Prince of Rhodes, also loves Partenope but will not say so publicly as he knows of her involvement with ‘Arsace. To complicate matters, Rosmira in her male disguise as Prince Eurimene, claims also to love Partenope, whose hand as his queen is solicited by the invading Emilio, Prince of Cuma. When she refuses Emilio, he declares war. Even the appointment of a prince to command her army causes confusion, and she eventually decides to do the job herself. ACTIL The troops face up to each other, and Partenope is saved from death by Armindo. Arsace rescues Rosmira and captures Emilio, and Partenope's triumph is apparently complete. But not for long. Rosmira/Eurimene reminds her that it was Armindo who saved her life. Emilio claims to be Arsace's prisoner rather than Eurimene/Rosmira's, and Rosmira prepares to fight Arsace, who cannot accept the challenge since he, and he alone, knows her true identity as a woman but has sworn not to reveal it. Though Partenope sticks by him, Arsace loses face with the others, who think him a coward, all except Rosmira/Eurimene, who defends him. Partenope orders the release of "Eurimene”, then starts to make up her mind whether she prefers Arsace or Armindo, the latter of whom has just declared his love. Rosmira complicates matters by asking (as Eurimene) to impart a secret to Partenope which will help the cause of Armindo, ACT II Eurimene's secret comes into the open: "his" quarrel with Arsace is on account of Arsace’s abandonment of a certain Rosmira, Princess of Cyprus, a charge Arsace admits. In the forthcoming duel, Emilio will be Arsace's second, Armindo Eurimene's. Arsace is in a trap and, to the surprise of Partenope, addresses Rosmira, who wakens him from a deep sleep, by her true name. Rejected by both women, Arsace inveighs against love's cruelty, then prepares for the duel. He is mocked for his half-hearted efforts by Rosmira but turns the tables by demanding they should fight bare-chested. Rosmira is outwitted, admits who she really is, and claims Arsace has proven his love by maintaining silence in the face of provocation. Partenope renounces Arsace, destines him for Rosmira, takes Armindo for her husband, and finishes the opera by proclaiming Emilio her ally. * Cuma, an ancient XIII century region on the shores of the Black Sea in what is today Turkey. 206 Partenope, Act I ACTI (The sun is rising. There is a large crowd in attendance. Partenope sits on a throne, with Arsace and Armindo in attendance.)
