Foreword

TC450 crown block is one of the main supporting components of ZJ70DBS drilling
rig. It is designed and manufactured as per requirements of customers, API Spec 4F 3rd
edition, “Specifications for drilling and well servicing structures” and API Spec 8C 4th
edition, “Specification for Drilling and oil Production Hoisting Equipment”.
In order to ensure our users to operate the crown block properly, we have prepared
this ‘User's manual for TC450 Crown block’. This manual generally describes the
technical parameters, overall structure and component structures, installation, operation,
lubrication and maintenance etc of crown block. Crown block operators shall read this
manual carefully before installation and operation.
There is a recommended one year spare parts list attached to this manual as a
reference for users ordering spare parts. If the parts you order are not included in the list,
please refer to “Parts list” of the crown block. And order as per the parts list of crown
block.
Every crown block has an ex-works serial number. Please point out the model and
the ex-works serial number of the crown block when users order spare parts or enquire
related things.

1. Safety warnings

z Only trained and qualified persons can install, operate and maintain equipment with
qualification certificates.
z Operators must read related operation manuals before operation, and can operate or
maintain equipment after the familiarity with its functions and operation.
z There shall be a chief principal designated for installation and maintenance, the
persons participating in work shall be assigned with clear work, and detailed and
reliable safety measures shall be available.
z In the operation process, strictly execute its operation specifications and follow
technical safety rules.
z Do not run equipment in the dark except that there are proper lighting facilities.
z Persons on duty shall wear labor protection articles as required.
z The used lifter and handling equipment must adapt to related weight to be operated.
z Make sure to release pressure to zero in disconnection of any high pressure pipelines
or hoses. Follow similar procedures in wiring of electric appliances and make sure to
cut off power supply before trying repair.
z It is forbidden to maintain and repair equipment during its operation.
z Do not overload equipment.
z Don't point high pressure air at human body, because it may cause human injury. It is
forbidden to run ball bearing or roller bearing with high pressure air. Don't point
high-pressure air at fire.

2. Product description

2.1 Purpose
The crown block is a fixed part consisting of sheaves of hoisting system, and it works
together with the traveling part of hoisting system to complete well drilling, drill string
tripping and casing running through DW.
2.2 Standards and specification for design and manufacture
2.2.1 Basic parameters accord with SY/T5609-1999 The types and basic parameters
for oil drilling rig.

2.2.2 Design accords with the third edition of API Spec 4F “Specification for Drilling
and Well Servicing Mast and Substructure”.
2.2.3 Design accords with the fourth edition of API Spec 8C “Specification for
drilling and production hoisting equipment”.
2.2.4 Design accords with AISC 335-89 “Specification for Steel Structure Building”.
2.2.5 Design accords with AWS D1.1/D1.1M:2002 Structural Welding Code-Steel.
2.2.6 Design accords with API Spec 9A Specification for Wire Rope, the 25th edition.
2.2.7 Designs are in accordance with API RP 9B “Recommended Practice on
Application, Care, and Use of Wire Rope for Oilfield Service” the 12th edition.

3. Structural features and main components

TC450 crown block consists of crown block frame, bearing seat, crown block shaft,
main pulley, fastline sheave, sand reel, auxiliary sheave, buffer device, ward off rope
frame, guards, ladders and handrails.
3.1 Crown block frame is a welded structural component and is designed and
manufactured in conformity with the API Spec 4F “Specifications for drilling and well
servicing structures” third edition.
3.2 The fastline on the crown block is led in the fastline sheave from the back of mast,
and crown block and traveling block are reeved along the line.
3.3 It is provided with ward off rope frame at outer edge of sheave, and main sheave
assembly is equipped with guard.
3.4 Bearings and sheave groove are designed in accordance with API Spec 8C 4th
edition, “Specification for Drilling and oil Production Hoisting Equipment”, the maximum
lifting wireline is 6×7 wireline, and the diameter of the wireline is φ38mm.

3.5 A double row tapered roller bearing is installed among every main sheave,
fastline sheave and shaft, each bearing is provided with an own independent lubrication oil
passage to ensure adequate lubrication of bearing. Before use and during working, every
sheave bearing shall be filled with NLGI 2 compound lithium base grease once a week. To
lubricate the sheaves of crown block conveniently there is a centralized lubricating device
installed on the side surface of walkway of crown block to fill the grease uniformly
through oil cups.
3.6 Locate the crown block and mast by 2 pieces of φ30 locating pins, and then fix it
on the mast by 12 pieces of M30 bolts. The bolt pre-tension shall meet the requirements of
8.8-grade bolt, and mechanical locking way is adopted to prevent loosing.
3.7 Two auxiliary shaves are hung at the lower part of crown block for hanging
wireline of pneumatic winch, and the load of every sheave is 50kN.
3.8 There is a logging winch shave is hung at the lower part of crown block for
hanging wireline, and the load of every sheave is 50kN.
3.9 There is a man-riding winch shave is hung at the lower part of crown block for
hanging wireline, and the load of every sheave is 10kN.
3.10 The crown block is equipped with truss-structural sheave lifting frame for lifting
sheaves during crown block repair, and its max. lifting capacity is 50kN.
3.11 There is a top drive hanging padeye welded at middle position of crown block
frame back for connecting with top drive guide rail easily to meet the requirements of top
drive device installation.
3.12 There is a sleeper buffer device below crown block frame for preventing
travelling block from impacting crown block frame directly.

4. Installation and use

4.1 Installation: this crown block is installed under the condition that mast
transversely lays on well site. During lifting, lift the upper padeye of crown block beam
with a crane and it is forbidden to trail crown block on the ground. In order to ensure the
normal working of crown block, align the wellhead center of crown block with that of
mast in installation, and the bottom surface of crown block frame is perpendicular to the
wellhead centerline of mast. Firstly, lift crown block to the top of mast, position the
bottom plate of crown block and the top plate of mast with two locating pins with

diameter of φ30, and then fasten with twelve M30 bolts (grade 8.8), and finally lock with
slotted nuts and split pins. Install other accessorial parts and components after crown
block main body is installed well. After completion of installation, carefully check for
missing components, wrongly installed components, screwing up of nuts and installation
of safety pins.
4.2 Use: The wirelines of crown block and the sheaves of traveling block are reeved
along the line.

5. Lubrication

A double-row taper roller bearing is assembled between each main sheave and the
shaft, and also between the guide pulley and the shaft, which can ensure smoothly running
of the sheave and the good stabilization and axial force resistance.Each bearing has an
individual separate lubricating oil passage which can ensure the sufficient lubrication of
the bearings and the flexible rotation of sheaves. Before use and during working, every
sheave bearing shall be filled with NLGI 2 compound lithium base grease once a week.
Lubrication grease is filled through grease nipples, and lubrication points are shown as
Fig.1.

6. Maintenance

6.1 In the transportation, installation and operation of crown block, the paint layer on
the surface of crown block shall not be damaged, thereby preventing crown block from
rusting quickly. In normal operation period, crown block shall be completely maintained
once a year, including thorough rust removal and corrosion prevention.
6.2 Check following items before the installation and the operation of the crown
block and during the working period:
6.2.1 Check all sheaves for flexible rotation and blockage.
6.2.2 Check all nuts for looseness, and screw down in time if any.
6.2.3 Check the connection between handrails for reliability and weld joints on tube
seats for crack, and repair if any.
6.2.4 Check whether protecting frame and kick back roller are damaged, contacts
sheaves and influence the rotation of sheaves or not.
6.2.5 Check whether all sheave bearings are greased or not before operation, lubricate
them as per specified time in working period, and check all lubrication oil passages for
smoothness.
6.2.6 Check all lubricated bearings for temperature rise which cannot be more than
40℃.
6.3 Wear and repair check of sheave groove:
As the size and shape of the sheave groove greatly influence the service life of
wireline, the sheave groove shall be measured periodically by using measuring gauge.
When the radius of rope race is smaller than 19.51mm, sheaves shall be repaired or
replaced.
The repaired sheave groove shall accord with the following regulations:
Nominal diameter of wireline: φ38mm
Radius R of bottom of groove (mm): 20.19mm ≤ R ≤ 20.96mm

7. Mothballing, moving and transportation

7.1 Before mothballing of crown block,dust, dirt and hydrophilic materials shall be
cleaned, and accumulated shall be drained completely.

7.2 Crown block shall be stored in dry and ventilating storehouse without corrosion.
There shall be enough supports below crown block to prevent crown block from
deforming.
7.3 All processed surfaces such as sheave groove are coated with anti-rusting oil and
then packed with plastic cloth.
7.4 All small parts such as pins and bolts etc shall be marked, coated with anti-rusting
oil and the boxed for storage.
7.5 When crown block is stored outdoors, cover it with tarp.
7.6 Crown block shall be packed and transported integrally, wherein handrails and
auxiliary sheaves etc can be removed and bound on crown block frame for transportation.
Small parts such as pins, bolts and safety pins are boxed for transportation.
