Electric Forces
Coulomb's Law
The force between two point charges is directly proportional to the magnitude of the
charges and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the charges.

FE α q1,q2
FE FE
q1 q2 FE α 1/r2
FE α q1 q2
r r2

FE = kq1 q2
q1 and q 2 are the charges in Coulombs (C) r2 k is Coulomb's constant
r is the distance between the centres in metres (m) k = 9.0 x 109 Nm2/C2

Note:
One key aspect in this unit is to be able to compare the types of
fields. You should already see something familiar in the equation
above, but also note a significant difference

So, what can we do now?

We can: Practice Problems
- calculate the forces on charges Page 330 # 1 - 7
- determine net forces Page 335 # 3 - 7, 10
- calculate accelerations
- evaluate changes in energy
- determine work done
- identify changes in speed
etc. etc. etc.

All of the stuff we have done all year!
