[Flexure Beam Capacity & Design of Shear - USD]

a 300x500mm rectangular section, 10m simply supported beam us subjected to a total uniform
factored load of 20kN/m and a concentrated load of 30kN acting at mid length. The tendons are
bonded with a total of 10-1/2 inch tendons of grade 250. The effective depth of the tension steel
reinforcement (2-25mm diameter) is 440mm, while tendons are located 400mm from the topmost
fiber of the beam. If fpy=0.85fpu, fpi=0.75fpu, f’’c=35MPa, fy=420MPa, and the total loss on
prestressing force is 20% determine the following:
a. Value of the maximum ultimate shear based on the indicated load as prescribed by the code.
b. Maximum bending moment based on the load provided.
c. Value of fps for flexure as prescribed by NSCP 2015.
d. Depth of the compression block.
e. Actual stress acting on thee tensile steel reinforcement.
f. Ultimate moment capacity of section.
g. Required capacity for transverse reinforcement.

2. [Design of Flexure Beams – WSD]

A 60ft prestressed bridge (simply supported) is to be designed using the following parameters:
f’’c=5000psi
fpu=2700psi
Wsd=350plf
WL=250plf
Assume WD=500plf
fpi=0.70fpu
Design a double-tee pretopped section with no topping (use table provided: 12DT30 & 12DT34)
fc=3000psi
f’’ci=3000psi
fci=1800psi
fti=848.53psi
ft=424.26psi
y(gamma)=0.70

b. Determine the required section modulus below the neutral axis in cubic inches.
c. What section can be used so that it is safe and nearest to the required section modulus.
d. To have the safe and most economical design, what strand pattern must be used?
e. What is the actual stress acting at the top most part if the section in psi?
f. What is the actual stress acting at the bottom most part of the section in psi?

3. A prestressed concrete beam has a width of 300mm and an overall depth of 600mm. The
prestressing tendons are placed at distance “e” below the neutral axis of the beam and the applied
prestressing force is P in kN. There is 15% loss of prestress.
a. Determine the values of P and e when the compressive stress in the entire cross section is
21MPa
b. Determine the values of P and e when the compressive stresses at the top and bottom of the
beam are 2MPa and 12MPa respectively.
c. Determine the values of P and e when the compressive stresses at the top and bottom if the
beam are 0MPa and16MPa, respectively.

4. A 300x500mm prestressed concrete beam is monolithically casted with a 100mm thick slab. The
beam is reinforced with 4-20mm diameter main reinforcing steel bars. It is then reinforced with 2-
leg stirrups, 10mm diameter. The beam is prestressed with 208-D1 tendon profile, grade 270. If
f’’c=35MPa and fyt=400MPa. Determine the spacing of stirrups in a “d” distance span using the
maximum ultimate shearing force acting on the beam. The beam is simply supported with a total
factored uniform load of 100kN/m. The beam has total length of 10m. Use detailed calculation.
Assume the beam is inside the building and that dp=480mm express your answer in multiples of
5mm.

5. The following points are located in the beam:

Point A is 2.5m from the left support
Point B is at the mid span of the first span
Point C is at the mid support
Point D is 3m from the right support
Point E is 4m from the right support
Other parameters
Effective prestressing force P=1000kN is applied
Gross cross sectional Area=350,000mm.sq.
Gross moment of inertia about the neutral axis=14,291.67x10^6 mm^4

Determine the total bending moment acting at the point C in kN-m.
