Industrial Assignment

1. Application Power Electronics

Power electronics applications are extended to various fields such as Aerospace,
Automotive electrical and electronic systems, commercial, industrial, residential,
telecommunication, transportation, utility systems, etc. In case of automotive electronics, the
electrically-generated systems are used in automobiles such as road vehicles like telematics, in-
car entertainment systems, carputers, and so on. The need to control engines of automobiles
originated in automotive electronics for proper controlling and conversion.
2. Operation and Main Application
Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics for the control and conversion
of electric power. It provides a basic knowledge of circuitry for the control and conversion of
electrical power with high efficiency. The structure of Modern power systems has been separated in
three different interlinked sections-generation, transmission and distribution likewise. Mostly the
output of generator is always AC, but in some applications, we need DC supply, where we get
optimum utilization of efficient power with respect to applications example different types of
sockets, connectors, switches, and fixtures. High-voltage direct current (HVDC) electric power
transmission systems use DC for the bulk transmission of electrical power. Whereas, in some cases
we need AC supply and we are supplied with DC quantity there, example transformers, Three Phase
motor, etc. In such cases we need to convert AC to DC or DC to AC. This can be done using electronic
devices such as SCR, Power BJT, Chopper, etc. In this paper we will study particularly application of
SCR, TRIAC, GTO and IGBT in electrical power system.
3. Advantage of Power Electronics
 Long life
 Small size
 High efficiency because of loss is low in power semiconductor devices
 High reliability of power-electronic converter system
 Can handle large output current
 Less maintenance due to the absence of any moving part
 Fast dynamic response of the power electronic system as compared to elector-
mechanical converter systems
 Less weight result in less floor space and therefore lower installation cost
 Low thermal dissipation
 Mass production of power semiconductor devices has resulted in lower cost of the
converter equipment
 Reduce the fluctuation in power fed to grid
 Reduce acoustical noise from the wide turbine
 High quality power to grid
 Flexibility in operation

4. Disadvantage of Power Electronics

 Complicated design
 Regeneration of power is difficult in power electronic systems
 AC to DC and AC converter operate at a low input power factor under certain operating
conditions. In order to avoid a law pf, some special measures have to be adopted
 Power electronic controllers have low overload capacity. As such, Increase the cost of
power electronic controller
 Power electronic converter circuits have a tendency to generate harmonics in the supply
system as well as in the load circuit

5. Contribution on the industry/day-to-day life.

Power electronics is being used to enhance the output power capability and efficiency of
the electric power generation components. It is also an enabling technology for a wide range of
new and improved functions that enhance vehicle performance, safety, and functionality.
If we look around ourselves, we can find a whole lot of power electronics applications in
our daily life in the house such as a fan regulator, light dimmer, air-conditioning, induction
cooking, emergency lights, personal computers, vacuum cleaners, UPS (uninterrupted power
system), battery charges, etc.
