PAMBUNGAD NA PANANALITA
          Magandang hapon sa inyong lahat!  Isang masayang araw ng pagtatapos.  Maswerte kayo dahil noong nakaraang taon, ni
hindi namulaklak ang mga sunflowers sa University Avenue.  Para sa inyo tiniyak naming mamumulaklak sila ngayong 2010!

          Sa ngalan ng buong kaguruan at mga opisyal ng Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, binabati ko kayong lahat sa inyong pagtatapos
ngayong hapon.  Ang araw na ito ay isang katuparan ng pangarap, pangarap ninyo at nang inyong mg magulang!  Binabati ko rin
ang mga magulang at mahal sa buhay na nagsikap upang kayo ay mapagtapos.

          Noong Setyembre 2009, sa inyong huling taon sa Unibersidad, ang maraming bahagi ng bansa ay sinalanta ng bagyong
Ondoy.  Marami sa inyo marahil ay tumulong at nagbigay tulong sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo at ng baha.  Maraming mga
problema ang nabigyang muli ng pansin dahil sa Ondoy, unang una na ang kahirapan ng napakaraming mamamayang Pilipino. 
Isang paalala na narinig na ninyo pero dapat ulitin.

          Sa pagtatapos ninyo mula sa Unibersidad ng Pilipinas, ang National University, huwag ninyong kalilimutan na ang inyong
edukasyon ay "heavily subsidized" ng mga Pilipino.  Meron kayong katungkulan at obligasyon upang tumulong sa paglutas ng
mga problema ng bansa, lalong lalo na sa "poverty alleviation!"  Kami sa Unibersidad ay nagsikap mabigyan kayo ng
kakayahang mapaunlad ang buhay ninyo at nang inyong pamilya, at mapaunlad din ang buhay ng iba!

          Nais ko ring isipin na kami na inyong mga guro, sa pagtanggap namin ng di-kalakihang sweldo, sa katunayan ay nag-
subsidize din sa inyong edkasyon!  Kapag kami ay hinahanapan ng "public service", hindi nga ba't public service na ang
pagtuturo sa UP?  ang pagtuturo sa inyo na mga Iskolar ng Bayan?

          Kaya't sa tamang panahon, kapag kayo'y matagumpay na, sana'y mag-donate kayo sa UP!  Sa inyong Kolehiyo!  Maaring
professorial chair, faculty or research grant, student scholarship fund o buong building kaya!

          Panghuli, hayaan ninyong banggitin ko ang pangalan ng isang magtatapos ng Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual
Communication si JEMIMA MING GO!

          Si JAMI Go ay isa sa mga nagtamo ng award na thesis grant mula sa Support Fund for Young Artists.  Si Jami ay
miyembro ng figure  ice skating at ice hockey Philippine team. 

          Siya ay magtatapos ng CUM LAUDE ngayong hapon.  At si Jami Go ay walang pandinig.  Siya ay bahagi ng deaf
community!  Si Jami ay pumasok sa klase, nakinig at sumagot sa mga guro, nakisalamuha sa kapwa estudyante sa tulong ng mga
sign language interpreters.  Mga mahal na magtatapos minsan ay walang "stumbling blocks" sa buhay, ang mga ito ay maaaring
maging"stepping stones"!  In a letter to me by Prof. Mitzi Aguilar Reyes, chair of the Dept. of Visual Communication, she said:

          It is the Department's advocacy to support and mentor talented and special young individuals by giving them the chance to
grow and develop their talents and providing enough support and understanding to express themselves as individuals.  Some
faculty members were apprehensive to admit Jami because we were not prepared to address this particular need.  But my personal
philosophy is that we should go out of our comfort zone if we want to help.  In Jami's first two years I would make it a point to
contact the teachers of her other courses outside of the College and inform them that they would have a hearing-impaired
student.  HER teachers were very open and accommodating.  By her third year, Jami had gained enough confidence to go on her
own without need for this intervention.  One beautiful development was that some of her classmates in the program learned to do
sign language and would sometimes act as her interpreter when her sign language interpreter was not present.  It was not at all
easy for Jami.  She had to hurdle the tedious requirements of her classes both in the GE courses, Math and Science courses and
treated just like any normal student.  A year after Jami's admission to the Dept of Visual Communication, the Department of
Studio Arts admitted Mr. Rommel Agravante, a deaf painter.  Sa kanyang thesis grant write up ay mababasa, Jami "is part of the
deaf community and aims to connect deaf individuals to the hearing world through their skills and talents so that better
understanding and acceptance will be achieved!"

          As you leave the four wall of UP today, armed with your degrees and diplomas reflect on this:  Are you willing to get out
of your comfort zone to help others?  What noble cause will you take on? 

          Again, congratulations to the graduates!
