4. Appliance description - function - operation

4.1. Basic concept

The TITAN examination unit is a refraction and examination unit with a precision-controlled
telescopic table for one, two or three table-top instruments.

The modular design allows it to form a workplace which can be extended with various
modules.

The working height of the instrument table can be matched individually to each patient,
continuously variable between 770 mm and 990 mm using an integrated electromechanical
lifting facility. This ensures that differences in size from a small child to a normal patient or a
wheelchair patient can be compensated for.

Use of the Block HT patient's chair means that it is also unnecessary to move a patient from
the wheelchair into the patient's chair, as the HT patient's chair can easily be moved to one
side, forwards or backwards (see also manual for HT patient's chair).

The telescopic table for the table-top instruments is available in various designs, with space
for one, two or three examination instruments, and also either manually or motor-driven.
The phoropter is attached to the phoropter arm (various designs) and is either moved
manually or is motor-driven in front of the patient by means of the phoropter rail.
The round stable projector column serves to support the optotype projector. If necessary, a
reading lamp is attached directly onto the phoropter arm or onto the projector column.
Connection and storage facilities are available forvVarious hand-held instruments, as is a
large selection of Various desk extensions.

The hand-held instruments have their place in the built-in charging unit and in the undulated
tray of the small instruments module.

All electrical functions are controlled via the keypad, placed in an ergonomically
advantageous position. This is where all the operating elements for controlling the motor
drives for the patient's chair, telescopic table, phoropter arm and lifting mechanism for the
unit are to be found, as well as the Various lighting facilities, such as the reading lamp,
room lighting, fixation lamps and Maddox cross. Integrated into the keypad are the control
rheostat for the lamp brightness of the table-top instruments and the main switch for the
unit.
Electronic safety circuits prevent the risk of being crushed for both patient and
ophthalmologist, both when adjusting the height of the patient's chair.

The examination unit is available as a right-hand or a left-hand unit (definition of direction:

from the examinator’s point of view, in which direction does the instrument table move
forwards?), as well as in various colour combinations or surface coatings in veneer wood or
plastic. There is also a big choice of colours for the upholstery of the patient's chair.
Refraction unit "TITAN" 13

External consumers such as the curtain motor, room lighting, external reading lamps and
fixation lamps can be combined with the electronic controls in the unit and are controlled via
the keypad of the unit.

There is the option of fitting the unit with an automatic room lighting system. This works so
that when the telescopic table is moved, when a hand-held instrument is taken from the
undulated tray and/or when the phoropter rail is brought forward by the motor, the room
lighting is reduced to the levels previously set. When the telescopic table is moved back,
the hand-held instrument is replaced and/or the phoropter rail moves back into place, the
room lighting is changed back to previously set levels.

The patient's chair normally used is the Block INNOVA HT patient's chair. Chairs made by
other manufacturers can be attached only on consultation with the manufacturer.

4.2. Mains supply

The mains supply to the unit and the connection with the electrical consumers in the
examination room which are to be controlled from the unit occur via a wall-mounted terminal
box or via power cable.

4.2.1. Wall-mounted terminal box (MSB-Electric)

The wall-mounted terminal box is equipped with a main switch (3-pole), all terminals (mains
input is fused separately) and a 3m long flexible cable to connect it with the unit. A longer
connection cable can be supplied on request. In order to make the equipment ready for
operation, the main switch on the wall-mounted terminal box (remains switched on during
normal operation) and the main switch on the unit keypad must be turned on.

4.2.2. Power cable (CSB-Electric)

With the delivered net cable and the mains supply unit the examination unit is connected to
the electricity network. The mains supply unit is installed outside in the column of the
examination unit. The mains supply unit is composed of a socket for the net cable, the
mains switch and two net fuses. Inside, upon the back door of the examination unit, you will
find the sockets for the connection of the projector and the charging set. The room light of
the examination room may be connected only by technical personnel. Therefore it is
necessary to open the door at the refraction unit. You will find here, built-in in a case, the
electronics. After unscrewing the three knurled-head screws the cover can be removed. To
which clamps the room light is connected can be taken from the circuit diagram in the
appendix.
Refraction unit "TITAN" 15

4.3. Telescopic instrument tables

The 40 cm wide telescopic instrument table is for use with ophthalmologic table-top
instruments. There are designs for 1, 2 or 3 large instruments, both manually adjustable and
motor-driven, or with combinations of both drive types.
The stable precision controls used ensure a long service life with no need for maintenance,
even with intensive use. In the case of manually adjustable telescopic tables, precision
controls manufactured by the company Schneeberger of Switzerland allow the table to be
moved with minimum use of force. This means that even with a large number of patients,
work without tiring is guaranteed. The easiest option for the user is of course the motor-
driven table.

The following telescopic instrument tables are available:

• Telescopic table for 1 instrument with Schneeberger Swiss precision control system,
manually adjustable for 1 ophthalmologic instrument, with a catch for one position,
automatically switching contacts, fixing device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 2 instruments with Schneeberger Swiss precision control system,
manually adjustable for 2 ophthalmologic instruments, with catches for two positions,
automatically switching contacts, fixing device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 3 instruments with Schneeberger Swiss precision control system,
manually adjustable for 3 ophthalmologic instruments, with catches for 3 positions,
automatically switching contacts, fixing device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 1 instrument with German precision control system (Ina), motor-
driven for the first position, with automatically switching contacts, sliding clutch, fixing
device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 2 instruments with German-Swiss precision control system

(Ina/Schneeberger), motor-driven for the first position, with sliding clutch, 2nd position
manually adjustable, with automatically switching contacts, fixing device for headrest
bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 3 instruments with German-Swiss precision control system

(Ina/Schneeberger), motor-driven for the first position, with sliding clutch, manual
shifting for the 2nd and 3rd positions, automatically switching contacts, fixing device
for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

• Telescopic table for 2 instruments with German-Swiss precision control system

(Ina/Schneeberger), motor-driven for both positions, with automatically switching
contacts, sliding clutch, fixing device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar

(Ina/Schneeberger), motor-driven for all three positions, with sliding clutch,
automatically switching contacts, fixing device for headrest bar and safety shut-off bar
16 Refraction unit "TITAN"

Manually adjustable tables are adjusted by pulling the instrument table using the chrome-
plated handle on the front of the intermediate leaf of the instrument table until the working
position with the slit lamp facing forwards is reached. The electronic controls of the unit stop
the instrument table automatically and connect the operating voltage to the slit lamp. In
order to change instruments between the first and second table positions, the release
button in the leaf of the table is pressed downwards and the top leaf of the instrument table
is pushed further forwards. The mechanical catch stops the table again automatically when
it reaches the second working position, and the supply voltage is switched over between the
table-top instruments. Moving to the third working position is done in the same way. When
the instrument table is moved back, the release button in the leaf of the table is again
pressed downwards and the top leaf is moved back. When the working position for the slit
lamp is reached again, the solenoid clamp is released by pressing the holding button for the
solenoid clamp on the main keypad, and the entire instrument table can be moved back.

All movements of the table require only minimum use of force; the basic design concept for
TITAN and the precision controls used have made this success possible.

The motor drive for moving the telescopic table forward is controlled via the key group
TABLE on the keypad (see Section 4.4). When the button "1" is pressed, the table moves
forwards and the electronic control system reduces the speed of movement forwards
automatically just before it reaches its final position. The slit lamp moves gently into the
working position in creep mode. At the same time the operating voltage is connected to the
slit lamp.

Pressing the button "2" on the keypad moves the telescopic table into the second working
position. By pressing the same button again, the third working position is reached. When
the button "0" is pressed, the telescopic table moves back to the starting position.
Even when the instrument table has moved forwards, the keypad is always within
convenient reach. All functions continue to be easy to control.

The connecting sockets for the instruments are visible on top of the table, where variable
low voltages are supplied. The preliminary setting of these voltages is done by service
personnel during assembly of the instruments.

The supply is laid out for a maximum power of 30 W per socket.

Pin configuration:
Pin 5: 0 Volt (regulated)
Pin 4: 6 Volt
Pin 3: 12 Volt
Pins 1 and 2: here the 100-ohm rheostat of the 30-SL-instruments basis can be
connected up to control the lamp voltage directly.
(If a resistance of 100 ohms is connected between pins 1 and 2, the
electronic controls for the unit put the rheostat on the operator
keypad out of operation, and changes in the voltage for the
examination instruments are only possible using controls on the
examination instruments themselves.)

During operation the voltages can be controlled by the rheostat on the keypad.
Refraction unit "TITAN" 17

4.4. Keyboards

Depending on the desired equipment, there are several types of keyboards available for the
CT unit. The keypad is built into the unit, above the trial lens drawer within convenient
reach. It is also possible to build the keypad in the writing desk.
The key allocation of the keypad depends on whether the unit CT is fitted with motor-drives
for the telescopic table and phoropter arm, or whether the telescopic table and the
phoropter arm are moved manually.

18 Refraction unit "TITAN"

In principle it is possible, on the basis of the modular controlling used in Block units, to
program the functions of the keypad components freely.

4.5. Phoropter arms

Various phoropter arms can be mounted on the phoropter rail of the TITAN examination unit
(whether driven manually or by motor). The phoropter rail is fitted on a precision guide who
makes it possible to move the phoropter arm with the attached phoropter in front of the
patient without great effort.

The following designs are available:

Phoropter arm, pre-tilted for all units

This phoropter arm is designed in a "gallows shape". This means that the horizontal part of
the phoropter arm, that is, the support bar of the phoropter, is moved approx. 10 cm
forwards in relation to the vertical part of the phoropter arm. The patient must therefore
bend forward to the phoropter.
Without supplementary equipment the phoropter cannot be brought into a tilt suitable for
reading. For this purpose the arm can be fitted with the "slight tilt facility" for Block phoropter
arms. Tilting along an axis between the arm and the phoropter is then possible.

Physiological phoropter arm with tilt facility, without height adjustment

This phoropter arm can be moved forward into a physiologically appropriate reading tilt by
pressing a manual release button, thereby providing optimum conditions for a close reading
test.

Physiological phoropter arm with tilt facility and motor-driven height adjustment

This phoropter arm has motor-driven height adjustment as well as manual tilt facility.
The built-in keypad has the following switch possibilities:
- 2 buttons for phoropter arm: up/down
- 2 buttons for patient's chair: up/down
- Room lighting 100%
- Moving phoropter arm back to home position

All phoropter arms can if required be fitted with reading lamps with flexible arms for the
optimum lighting of the sample text for the close reading test.
Refraction unit "TITAN" 19

4.6. Patient's chair

The examination unit TITAN is best complemented by the Block INNOVA HT patient chair.
This chair was developed especially for ophthalmologists and opticians. It meets the highest
standards in fittings and operational comfort and has the following features:

• motor-driven height adjustment UP/DOWN

• chair can automatically be moved to lowest position
• SAFETY SHUT-OFF for lifting mechanism via unit
• motor-driven seat movement forwards/backwards
• motor-driven tilting of backrest down to horizontal position, while at the same time
raising the foot and calf support from vertical to horizontal position
In this way the tilted chair can also be used as a couch
• SAFETY FOOT SUPPORT
No danger to the patient's feet or heels, as the foot support is automatically retracted
in case of risk when the upper part of the chair is being lowered
• Controlling of the motor functions via the main keypad of the examination unit or the
two keypads at the back of the chair
• movable neck rest integrated into the back rest
• hinged arm-rests which can be pushed away
• large selection of cover materials for upholstery (material – Skai “Palma” -syntethic
leather)
• lacquering of metal elements according to customer order in all RAL colours
• upper part of chair rotatable and locks every 90º (to avoid cable breaks a SAFETY
CATCH is built in at approx. 20º anti-clockwise, laterally reversed in left-hand units).
• equipped with moving mechanism for lower part of chair, so that the patient's chair
can be moved forwards or backwards to examine a wheelchair patient

Instead of the Block HT patient's chair, the Block patient's chairs CT or OPAL can also be
used. In this case, however, the functional complexity is not available (see manual for CT
chair). These chairs do not have motor-driven tilt facilities for the backrest, with the foot
support moving simultaneously.

When combining with products made by other manufacturers, particular attention should be
paid to safety requirements. The safety shut-off of the lifting function must without fail be
guaranteed. It should also be ensured that there is no danger of injury from the foot
support.

4.7. Storage of small instruments

Space has been made at the front of the unit for building in a small instruments module. It is
possible to choose between various possibilities for storage from the accessories on offer:

1. Undulated tray for 3 ophthalmologic hand-held instruments, with 3 photocells to switch

the hand-held instruments on and off automatically, optical display of availability of the
instrument in question, control rheostat and transformer

2. Undulated tray for 3 ophthalmologic hand-held instruments, which are switched on

using the switch built into the hand-held instrument, with transformer

3. Undulated tray for 1 ophthalmologic hand-held instrument, with one photocell to

switch the hand-held instruments on and off automatically, optical display of
availability of the instrument in question, control rheostat and transformer, combined
with a twin charging unit for charging handles

4. Undulated tray for 1 ophthalmologic hand-held instrument, which is switched on and

off via the switch built into the hand-held instrument, combined with a twin charging
unit for charging handles

5. Undulated tray for 1 ophthalmologic hand-held instrument, with micro-switch

6. Undulated tray with micro-switch for 1 ophthalmologic hand-held instrument, with

transformer, controlled via rheostat

7. Heine or Welch-Allyn twin charging unit built into the unit including support frame and
cover screen. The charging unit is mounted securely in a special support with a cover
on the front of the unit. For the plug-in power supply unit of the charging unit, a
separate two-pole-and-earth socket outlet is available in the unit.

8. Close testing instruments: Special hook-shaped supports can be attached and power
is supplied via the 6 V low voltage socket.

4.8. Automatic room lighting

There is the option of fitting the unit with an automatic room lighting system. This works so
that when the telescopic table moves forward, when a hand-held instrument is taken out of
the undulated tray and when the phoropter is being driven forward by the motor, the room
lighting is reduced. When the telescopic table moves back into place, the hand-held
instrument is replaced and the phoropter moves back into place, the room lighting is
adjusted back to previously set levels.

A desk approx. 1915 mm long and 1407 mm wide with several parts can be connected onto
the basic part of the TITAN unit.

The desk acts as a workplace for the ophthalmologist and has drawers for storing spectacle
cases, measuring spectacles and other small instruments.
Leg parts on both sides with adjustable height make it possible to fit exactly onto the basic
part of the examination unit.

Various designs of cabinets which fit under the desk are available, in order to increase
storage possibilities according to need.

Other forms of desk can either be chosen in accordance with the Block price list or are
manufactured according to individual requirements.

5. Installation and commissioning

5.1. Required Space and Connection Requirements

The examination unit TITAN with a twin instrument telescopic table can be mounted directly
on the wall together with its main base, because when the telescopic table is moved back it
does not exceed the outer limits.
The minimum amount of desk-top space required, including the available desk is 2770 mm
times 2690 mm (instrument table fully extended).

If the HT chair headrest has to be tilted backwards, without previously being turned, an
extra 600 mm has to be allowed for during planning (2690 mm + 600 mm). This, of course,
is in contrast to the usually limited available projecting distance.
If the patient, together with the upper part of the chair, is turned through 180° (in a
clockwise direction with right-handed units) before the backrest is inclined, the patient’s
head is nearer to the middle of the room and thus more accessible for minor treatment and,
in addition, one also saves 600 mm of room length.

In order to achieve the minimum projecting distance of 4 m without using a tilted mirror, it is
also possible at times to place the unit diagonally in the room so as to utilise the longer
room diagonal as a projecting distance.

The column holding the optotype projector ends 1710 mm above floor level. If, perhaps,
slanted walls near the projector column are part of the room, the height of the room there
has to be at least 2000 mm.

The examination unit with its wall-mounted terminal box unit shall be connected to the
mains and the electrical installation in the surgery (e.g. room lighting, curtain control, etc.).
The mains voltage must be 230 V, 50-60 Hz with a rating of at least 6.3 A (1500 VA). If
other consumer circuits are connected such as room lighting, etc. the power consumption is,
of course, larger.

5.2. Installing the basic unit

After the packing has been removed, the unit’s main base shall be transported to where it is
to be installed. The basic unit, telescopic table, phoropter rail, electronic module and small
instrument unit have been preassembled. The blocking screw, marked red and necessary
during transportation, is accessible from underneath the telescopic table and shall be
removed.

5.3. Installing the table-top instruments

A 40 cm wide table top is available for the examination instruments next to the CT. The
distance between instruments is the usual 38 cm. The top surface of the table is completely
flat. There are no protruding parts from sockets or similar such obstacles. The table-top
instruments are thus to be screwed directly onto the top surface of the table using Spax-
type screws (table top material: medium density fibre board).
A 6-pole instrument socket is installed to the right of each of the table-top instruments that
provide variable low voltages.

Pin 5: 0 Volt (regulated)

Pin 4: 6 Volt
Pin 3: 12 Volt
Pin 1 & 2: here the 100 ohm potentiometer (30 SL instrument basis
type) can be connected up to control the lamp voltage
directly.

Warning!
A maximum load of 30 VA can be drawn from each of the instrument’s sockets. Do not
connect up any table-top instruments with 50 W halogen lamps!

The extreme values of lamp voltage for the instruments can be varied using the four service
buttons (see the description for the service display and operation of the “Pyrit“service
programme). The extreme values can also be set by a computer using the “Pyrit“service
programme.

Warning!
A wrong setting can lead to the destruction of the halogen lamps in the table-top
instruments!

Screw-in supports are available for installing the cable tubing made by Haag-Streit Slit
Lamps or a company that imitates them. Video cable supports can be mounted in the same
way. A power inlet loop for the video cables themselves, together with a 230 V mains cable
that might be necessary, can be safely mounted under the surface of the table for laying
these cables.

5.4. Aligning the examination unit

When the unit is being aligned in the surgery, the main base and desk can be placed
directly against the wall. A distance of 650 mm has to be left in the direction of the backrest
on the patient’s chair between the main base and the edge of the room. This space is
necessary for the projector column and the base plate of the of the Block HT patient’s chair.
When the backrest on the patient’s chair is inclined in the same direction, another 600 mm
are required.
A reading distance of 4 m, although preferably 5 m, is required from the projector column to
where the projection surface is mounted.
After the unit has been mounted, it is aligned horizontally using a spirit level. The adjustable
feet fitted on the main base and the desk sections are used for this purpose. The instrument
table is moved into the slit lamp’s working position; the spirit level placed on its top surface
and levelled using the four adjustable feet. After the feet have been adjusted, each one’s
locknut shall be tightened.

5.5. Installing the projector column and the projector

The projector column is screwed to the main base. At the top end of the column there is a
projector support flange (30 mm internal clearance diameter) with an attachment screw.
Suitable adapters for projectors with differing mounting dimensions are available upon
request.
The generously placed cable runs give rise to the projector’s mains cable to the 230 V
Schuko-type mains socket being fed through the main base. This is connected to the main
switch on the unit.

5.6. Installing the phoropter arm

The phoropter arm is pushed over the phoropter rail’s vertical support lugs (with spaced
support holes) and then screwed tight in one of the Various vertically spaced hole positions
using the enclosed socket head cap screw and the large securing flange. This height
positioning should only take place after the phoropter has been mounted, because the
height of the line of sight over the instrument table surface is the relevant dimension here
(see 5.6).
24 Refraction unit "TITAN"

5.7. Installing the phoropter

Support pieces with support holes with a diameter of 22 mm and an attachment screw for
securing the phoropter are mounted on all BLOCK PHOROPTER ARMS. In addition,
various adapters exist with lugs with a thickness of 22 mm, in order to secure the Various
phoropters in these holes.
The phoropter is held in place by the attachment screws at the top that fit into the slot in
each of the support lugs. The attachment screws at the bottom serve to secure the
phoropter after parallelism between the phoropter and the front edge of the instrument table
has been established.
If connecting cables have to be laid for the control system or for lighting purposes, these are
drawn through the inside of fixed phoropter arms via the punched cable holes in the top part
of the arm. The cables are passed through cable channels with movable phoropter arms
(inclined for reading).

Final adjustment of the phoropter arm’s height, relative to the level of the instrument table,
can only be determined after the phoropter has been mounted.
A primary rule for positioning the height of the phoropter viewing apertures is that one
assumes a height of approximately 400 mm above the surface of the instrument table.
This height is made up of the basic height above the top edge of the table, 375 mm with slit
lamp examinations and an average straightening up of the upper part of the patient’s body
consisting of approximately 25 mm when a patient lays his or her head on the phoropter
frontal rest. The adjustment in height is determined by the adjustable supports between the
phoropter arm and the phoropter rail.

If reading lights on the phoropter arm are chosen to be a part of the equipment, for
instance, Bruck-type 12 V/20 W halogen lamps as swan neck reading lights, then these are
ready-mounted in the factory.

5.8. Reading lights

You can chose between lamps on the phoropter arm, i.e.,

• Bruck-type reading lights (ready-mounted on the phoropter arm and connected up)

• And lamps that are mounted on the projection column with corresponding adapters

• Reading lights with a parabolic grid and two 230 V fluorescent lights, without dimmer
• The “Cloe Morsetto,“ an classic design of reading light
• The “Lifto“, an elegant reading light

The reading lights “Cloe Morsetto,“ and “Lifto“ are operated from the keypad and connected
to the main module by the terminal connection X22.

5.9. Installing the desk

Initially, both adjustable feet (side sections) are set under the main desk top (attention
should be given to the position of the guide plugs) and screwed together with the enclosed
socket head cap screws.

In order to align the desk top and to compensate for any irregularities in the floor, the height
of both adjustable feet can be adjusted.
The design of the various desks supplied differs in shape, size and material according to
customer requirements. In the same way, the mounting procedure differs accordingly.

5.10. Connecting the Innova HT patient’s chair

The telescopic instrument table of the examination unit is moved into position 1, that is, the
working position of the slit lamps. At the same time, the headrest is moved into the
examining position. The patient’s chair is now aligned with the middle of the headrest. This
determines the space between the side of the patient‘s chair and the examination unit.
The distance between the chair and instrument table, after it has been moved over, is
arranged such that when the patient is sitting comfortably, the headrest has not yet been
reached and that sufficient space between the arm rests on the patient’s chair and the
instrument table is guaranteed.

The link-up for the electrical connections has already been prepared (see also the manual
on the HT patient’s chair). The bottom part of the chair (motor-drive base) is connected to
the cable (7-pole round plug connector) coming from the unit. This cable from the main
module of the electronics supplies the motor drive with the necessary supply voltage. It is
plugged into the bottom motor-drive base.

The top part of the chair is connected to two cables from the unit. Two sockets are to be
found at the end of the rear backrest cover. The mains voltage is fed in from the 4-pole
socket on the left hand side. Next to it, on the right, the connection to the main keypad is
made via the 12-pole socket.
Five fuse holders are to be found to the immediate right of the sockets that are labelled F1
to F5 from left to right. F1 and F2 are the mains input fuses; F3 is for the drive to the
backrest, while F4 and F5 are for the horizontal to and fro chair movement.
If a separate foot switch for controlling the up-and-down movement is required, this is
connected to the unit on the main module directly (see collection of circuit diagrams).

After the chair has been commissioned, it is imperative to check to see whether the
automatic shutdown for the lifting mechanism is working!!!

5.11. Connecting external electrical consumers

All external electrical consumers, such as room lighting, motor-driven curtain drive, reading
lights outside the unit, fixation lights, the illumination of the Maddox cross or other light
sources (spots) are connected to the wall-mounted terminal box and fed with the necessary
supply voltages from the unit.
Please give attention to the circuit diagram “Schematic installation diagram for the wall-
mounted terminal box“.

5.11.1. Room lighting

Both incandescent and halogen lamps can be directly controlled and supplied from the unit.
However, care should be taken, so that only incandescent lamps and inductive transformers
can be dimmed for the halogen lighting. No fluorescent lights, power-saving lamps or
electronic ballast for halogen lamps shall be connected to the ROOM LIGHTING terminals
in the wall-mounted terminal box.
It is possible to switch the room lighting on and off via additional buttons in the room
installation, as shown in the “Schematic installation diagram for the wall-mounted terminal
box“. It is not possible to dim the room lighting using these additional buttons. The use of a
micro-controller requires set conditions for the turn-on and turn-off transients. In order to
cover all possible cases that may arise, the room lighting is set to 100% in the programme
used, when the units are turned on (micro-controller booted). In the same way, it is set to
100% when the unit is shut down if, at this point in time, it has not already been turned off
by the button on the unit keypad.
It is possible to turn the unit on and off using an external button when it has already been
turned on or off.

5.11.2. Curtain drive

Electrical drives for curtains, slats or roller blinds are connected as shown in the “Schematic
installation diagram for the wall-mounted terminal box“.

5.11..3 External reading lights - spots

The reading light mounted on the phoropter arm is used to illuminate the close reading
samples. If reading lights are controlled outside the unit, for instance, as ceiling lights or as
individual lamps, they are connected to the wall-mounted terminal box as shown in the
schematic installation diagram.
These 230 V connections have a maximum load rating of 550 W. The associated switching
element on the keypad is labelled “Spot“.

5.11.4. Fixation lights and Maddox cross

In order to fix the patient’s line of sight, fixation lights and the Maddox cross can be turned
on from the keypad. They are connected in the wall-mounted terminal box as shown in the
enclosed terminal diagram. It is possible to make low 6 V voltages with a maximum load
rating of 20 W.

6. Maintenance and care

The basic engineering concept gives rise to the examination unit requiring normally no
maintenance. There are no components or subassemblies, for instance, those requires
regular adjustment or have to be greased.

For maintenance and care of the installed instruments please consult the manuals.

To ensure the high safety standard and high quality of the examination unit Titan we
recommend maintenance every two or three years depending on how often the unit is used.
Please contact an authorized Block service technician.

The troublesome checking of the hydraulic oil level is no longer necessary, because the
chair is motor driven. Leaks are of no concern.

We recommend cleaning the coated surfaces with a cloth moistened (never dripping wet) in
a soap solution, whereby no moisture must be allowed to get in between the keyboard keys.

Before starting this work, always turn the main switch off in the wall-mounted terminal
box!!!

Before it is switched back on again, the unit should be completely dry!

It is advisable to protect the unit against dust with a protective hood at the end of each
working day, simply because open measuring and examining instruments are inherently
sensitive to dust.
