AC 5.1 Describe the meaning of Equal Opportunities

The meaning of Equal Opportunities is the right, without discrimination, whether it’s race, disability, age,
sexuality, gender, and many others…to be treated fairly and EQUALLY. It also means that offering guidance
or training to those who may need it, GET IT, so that they have the same equal chance as everyone else.
AC 5.2 Describe the VALUE of Equal Opportunities legislation. (Select THREE pieces of key
legislation).

Legislation example 1:

(1995) The Children NI Order

Value?

The value of this legislation is that it protects children’s and young people’s rights, and allows them to
have a voice and MATTER in a court custody between their parents. Their opinions and feelings are heard
and listened to.

Legislation example 2:

(2006) Disability Discrimination Order NI

Value?

The value of this legislation is that it respects disabled individuals, and doesn’t treat them any different,
or hold them to any more…or less of a standard than anybody else. It protects their human rights and
voice, and makes sure they are heard and FEEL they are heard. It is a legislation that’s main purpose is
that everyone is equal, disabled mentally/physically or not. It means that any place of education/work
has to have accessibility for all disabled people, and any necessary medical needs, but also is friendly
towards sign language, or braille, and has facilities available for those who need them. It also is about
having equal opportunities for disabled people and non-disabled people, and not prioritising anybody for
jobs or experiences.

Legislation example 3:

(2010) The Equality Act

Value?

The value of this legislation is that gender is not a forefront reason for somebody getting a job, and it
ensures everyone is equal, and makes sure everyone has the right to receive equal pay.
